Wk of July 8--WISH Walking/Running Club

Stephanie - :wizard: :wizard: for your friend and his dw!!!!!

OK I am posting my WO even though I thought about not posting it b/c it was so BAAAAAD!
1st mistake was going out at 1300! It was so hot outside that my shoes were sticking to the pavement...so I rethought my goals...so I would not die!
Here it is (don't laugh):
Run: 1.1 miles in 9:27
BIke: 2.595 miles in 11:31
Run: 1.1 miles in 10:42
Bike: 2.762 miles in 14.34
I did not push at all but quit b/c I started getting a headache. I just reread my RW from Aug 2006. It talked about overheating so I am a little paranoid right now.

If you think that's bad... as proud as I was to go out last night, my splits were:
12:38
13:07
12:50
12:56
I did R2/W2 for almost the entire time - decided it was more important to live through it than to post a fast time (not that my "fast" is anything close to yours!) This heat has to break SOON!

Krista - Hooray for TM Nirvana!

Judy
- Glad everything went okay. Hang in there - we're here to keep you from going stir crazy! (I almost said we're here to keep you sane - then realized just how not true that was!)

Meghan - Take it easy this week. Hope the pain goes away!

Sunny - One more who's glad to see you posting!

Mandy & Elizabeth - Welcome!

Jackie

I just had to respond to this even though this afternoon has turned crazy busy for some reason!

This made me laugh so hard, not because it was a bad workout and not worthy of posting here, but because this is pretty much my dream workout! If I ever finish just one mile in less than 11 minutes, even if they have to take me directly to the hospital afterwards, I will be here posting about my triumph! :rotfl:

I just love that we are all at different levels and can still be supportive of each other. This is such a great group.

I realized that running on the TM is not as easy as I thought it would be. Granted its less hot and humid then running outside right now (especially with the fan from the TM, another fan and the A/C pumping on me!! LOL) But it seems to be taking me FOREVER to get to one mile - today it took me 15 minutes just to get to a mile. Guess I am just not going at a fast enough pace because I know I can do it since my 5K race pace time was 11.30 mpm. I only did the 15 minutes this AM since my shin and my big toe started bothering me. I probably will hop on there when I get home from work but don't want to irritate my shin any more so depending on how it feels.

QuestionIn order to get a faster time on the TM I am assuming I need to speed up my MPH but when I got up any faster than 6 MPH :scared1: I felt like I was going to fling off the back!! Any hints on how to get my speed up without feeling like that? I am assuming I can't hold on?

Judy Glad to hear the surgery went well. I am sure you will be back training in no time.
Howard Great job on your run and for getting out there in the heat.
Krista WTG on the run on the TM. I bet Hines gave you puppy dog eyes when he realized he wasn't going outside!!
Elizabeth Welcome to the WISH team. Sorry to hear about the bad track conditions, that is no fun.
Mandy Welcome to the WISH team and great job on the TM
Stephanie Great on getting 3 miles in - sorry to hear about your running partner. :wizard: to him and his wife.
Christa I don't think your WO times are bad. I think they are great and I know I would be able to do all that especially that quick.

Thanks for all the good thoughts for my friends--I don't think he really knows whether or not the FL ironman is out or not. The ortho is sending him for an MRI of his arm/shoulder on Friday, with a follow up appt. on Tuesday.

Optimike--here is a link you might want to check out since you said Akron is still on the radar http://media.discoverneo.com/movies/marathon06.wmv The race director sent us an email after we registered with this link in it--it's a video shot of the race course--just be forewarned, it moves FAST, got a little motion sickness watching it!

Christa--sorry the workout was a stonker for you. The heat is just brutal!

meghan--that's the best thing about this team--we pretty much cover the entire spectrum of speeds and abilities here-but no one person's accomplishments are better or worse than others-They are all great!

Okay, kids are BEGGING to go outside--and it has finally stopped raining for a bit, so I suppose we'll go kick the ball around!

Hey everybody--only time for a quick drive-by report today!

No training last night, as DBF and I went to the Tim McGraw and Faith Hill concert! I guess you could considering my dancing XT!
Cam--you were right the concert was AMAZING!!! They are both awesome performers, and when they sing together it is amazing! I forgot to ask you how the Kenny Chesney concert was--didn't you guys go a couple of weeks ago???

Tonight, I have a hockey game. I thought about trying to get a run in this afternoon after work, but it was just way to hot and humid. I teach soccer to kids at my camp in the mornings and I was feeling a little dehydrated after that this morning, so I decided to skip the run, and just play hockey tonight. Hopefully, it cools off a little tomorrow, so I can get my run in!

Judy--Glad to hear the surgery went well and you are back to training really soon!

To everyone else, Keep up the good work!!!

My butt has gone from sore to numb. I could never be a full-time couch potato.

Where is MS Dave? :confused3

I think knitting all day is XT because my arms are tired.

Thank you all for the kind words today.

Last week I know you guys fired off a lot of letters to PI, and I wanted to post something I saw on someone's blog today. His letter to PI, and their response back....:

Letter to PI:
Dear Sirs,
I was going to let the ad sit and not bother you with my opinion regarding your latest marketing campaign attempting to inspire 'runners' and marginalize 'joggers'. But seeing this ad for triathlon gear sitting in my inbox this morning reminded me that I will no longer be purchasing your gear and I wanted to let you know why.

I have read many comments by 'runners' and 'joggers' across the Internet taking offense at your latest campaign for one reason or another. Either it's the pace that you list that makes someone a 'runner' or calling people who run with iPods 'joggers' or the actual division that you make between the two groups. I can see all of their points and I can agree with them all on some level or another. At the same time, I read through your entire marketing spiel on the wearenotjoggers website and I have to admit, while at one time I did fall into your 'jogger' category, by your definition I fall into your 'runner' category and from a 'runner' perspective, the ad motivated me to get out and hit the trails hard. The issues of iPod wearing and your defining line between 'running' and 'jogging' are of no concern to me.

That excited me and I liked the though of your gear being specifically engineered to support the type of 'running' that I do. But that is me. I'm just a small minority of the people that will see your ad. While I like to be motivated by things that make me feel powerful and alive, there's another issue that I think you're completely missing and as a result you've wronged the sport of 'running'. This ad, since it was run in an American publication and hosted on the Internet, is obviously viewable by Americans. This country is currently battling with several health related issues due to obesity and lack of physical activity. Getting Americans off their couches, away from their computers and televisions, is like pulling teeth. Any excuse they have to not be active is something that they cling on to. Attacks like this on slower 'joggers', however sarcastic or cleverly worded the ad may be, will be taken literally by those readers and rather than encourage them to become 'runners', can discourage them and place them back on their couches.

Back when I first started 'jogging', I walked into a Foot Zone running store in Issaquah, Washington and bought my first pair of running shorts. They were bright yellow and made me feel fast. I bought them because I recognized the PI logo on them and knew that you made good gear. If I had known then that those shorts were made for 'runners' and not 'joggers' like I was then, I'd have put them back on the rack and picked a pair of Brooks or Asics shorts. Neither of those companies are ignorant to the battle of the bulge going on in this country. And neither of them made me feel small or marginalized.

The response from PI:
On behalf of [pi] and myself I wanted to take the opportunity to comment directly to Jeff’s letter to [pi] in a hope to provide a bit of perspective from our end. First, I would like to express that from our viewpoint running is not about how fast a person is but rather about a passion, appreciation and reverence for the sport.

For what its worth I’m a soon to be 40, lifelong cyclist turned runner who is going to attempt to run up Mt Evans this weekend. I guarantee that even if I run the race of my life I’ll be the back of the pack. Regardless of how fast I manage to get to the top, I sure as heck believe that I’m a runner even thought I’ll be crushed by many who are faster (after seeing Jeff’s PBs, I am also kind of hoping he’s not going to be in Colorado tomorrow).

Becoming a runner has been an amazing experience for me. As a cyclist I always wondered how runners did (and enjoyed) the sport. I would read about 80+ year old people and cancer survivors running marathons in wonder. Then I started running and began to love the simplicity, the freedom, the purity of purpose, and the commitment required. I’ll even admit that I often referred to myself as jogger. Then I realized that everyone that road a bike fast or slow, short or far was a cyclist so why would running be any different.

Running - far, short, fast, slow, up or down - is a formidable and meaningful endeavor. It’s a unique and wonderful part of being human and something that we at Pearl Izumi believe should be celebrated, valued and revered. We launched “Run Like an Animal” to challenge what we believe is a trend of running being watered down and marginalized while simultaneously being over- complicated by shoes with “chips” and excessive tecno “mumbo jumbo.” One of the upcoming creative elements we're working on even states “If you weren’t a great runner, you never would have been born!” People as a species are wonderful runners. we can do with two legs what others do with four and over ultra long distances many argue only the horse is better.

At [pi], I fell very fortunate to be part of a company filled with passionate runners and cyclist who work very hard to make the best products we possibly we can. What I hope to reiterate is that we are not saying that the line between running and the fictitious “jogging” we irreverently refer to is about speed (we'll leave that debate up to the forums) but rather about emotion, passion and a sense of purpose. Our Director of Run Footwear is an amazing ultra distance runner but not as fast in a 10k or 5k as others in our company. Regardless, we’re all still runners and have a very competitive but healthy, fun and friendly rivalry.

Unfortunately, it’s difficult to create any single thing that every loves and praises. In our effort to create marketing communications that are meaningful and relevant to readers and convey our commitment to and passion for the sport; we’re probably not always create ads that every loves. I truly wish we could and apologize that we are not always successful. However, please be assured that while we take our customers, products, and brand very seriously, we have a sense of humor and that We Are Not Joggers was developed with the intention of being “tongue and cheek.”

If anyway would like to contact myself or [pi] directly just drop us an email at info@pearlizumi.com. Believe it or not we love to hear from our customers whether it’s good or bad and I would like to thank Jeff for giving us the opportunity to express our views.

Best Regards,

Cache Mundy
VP Marketing (and a slow but proud runner)

guess who's back, back again... did anyone jus thear squealing. It is official, we've booked out flights, 5 days in California, then we arrive Orlando Jan 3rd, I'm actually doing it - hooooorrraaaaayyyyyy!

So, this probably tells you that I got round my half a couple of weeks ago with no foot issues. It was great - I felt so sick beforehand, it felt like my first half (not my 18th!!!). Got there and did the QPR thing (queue, pee, repeat - makes me laugh as Tim's favourite soccer team is called QPR!) then joined the start line, all I could think was 'well I didn't think I'd be doing this again about 2 months ago'. When the gun went off I burst into tears (hmm, Helen crying while running, who'd have thought that could happen), npot helped by the fact that I didn't think I would know anyone at this race as none of my New Zealand friends had made it over - or so I thought. I'd just got over the start line and I could see someone that looked a bit familiar - then I can see waving, and it was someone from my old running club that I didn't know was going to be there. He was supposed to be running the marathon but got sick but got up early anyway in case he saw me! Cue more crying!

Anyway, I looked at my watch for the first 2km and I was running about 6.15kms, then I stopped looking until half way when I was at 1.06.didn't look again until 14km (1.29) - at this point I'm a bit confused. I'm feeling fantastic, despite having done about half as much training as I normally would for a race and only two runs over 1.30 at all due to foot babying. I was totally expecting to run to about 17km in 2 hours, then walk/run in - and I realise I'm going faster than that! Decided not to pressure myself though, I knew the under 2.20 pace runner was still behind me so I just made it my aim not to be overtaken by them - and I wasn't, I did it in 2.18, which I think was faster than two years ago when I trained for it!!!! I was so happy, particularly as my feet ached for about an hour but that was it - next day, after a few stretches (Dave: go hug that man at Rochester for me, I love him!) no pain at all.

And guess what, my second toenail on my right foot is balck again, all is right with the world. Anyway this post is probably long enough, but consider me back on the team and at some point tomorrow I will catch up with everyone's goings on. Gotta start work now, spend so long booking flights and Candy Cane Inn reservations I'm running very late - still dont' have Orlando hotels, think I'd better make that tomorrow's job!! Helen

Good for you for getting your WO in. Will your friend still get to do the Fl IronMan? Lotts of :wizard: :wizard: for him...and his wife!

Where is Melissa???

Wow! I'm just impressed that your "bad" workout sounds pretty darn good to me. LOL I just ran my first race ever, and I ran it at a 10 minute per mile pace. I'd love to break 10 minutes, but it's so hard right now. I'll start off flying and feeling great, and then 20 minutes into it I feel like I dropped my lungs a mile back! I understand about worrying about overheating though. One of the first days I ran was around 95 and very humid. I got home and had the whole headache/nausea thing going on. Since then I've been much more careful about the heat, the last thing I want is to end up with heat stroke or something!

This was Meghan posting of Christa's stonker...Meghan, you said it! Christa, I would be thrilled and I do love that we all work at it together regardless of our pace we are all doing it.

Christa, sorry that you almost didn't want to post that and I am mighty glad you did for sure!

Helen! Great news!

Judy, so glad surgery went well and sorry about that flatt butt and sore hands thing you've got going there. It won't be long.

Sorry to everyone, I haven't properly read everything from today.

I sure WISH that I had come on here before my run this AFTERNOON! I missed my run this morning due to some family issues, and though that I would just get it in this afternoon. So around 4:30 I go out for my 6 miles. Guess what..... I made it 3.5 before I just quit and came home!! My pace was around 9:15 mpm, but it felt sooooo much worse. When I got home I decided to check the weather (should have done that before I left) and the heat index was 103!! "O" well ..... I guess I'll just get my 6 in on Thursday instead.

Christa - Sorry your run was a stonker.... but hey.... at least you're not alone!!

Helen - Congrats on being back in for this year!!

About PI - I don't care how "tongue in cheek" their comments were meant to be..... they were jut flat out rude, and their letter to "Jeff" did nothing to dissuade my anger towards them for the way they belittled me and every other "jogger" out there.

Dana

Thanks Stephanie! Looks pretty easy when your speeding around at about 120 miles an hour. Heartrate hill looks like nothing! You're right about the motion sickness thing. Now I need to go rest my tummy.

Ditto! Calling joggin half-@@@ed and many of the other comments are just well beyond teh range of humor!

Helen - SO good to see you and great to have you "back"! lol about the toe. :goodvibes

Cindy - Thanks for the info. I did see the one in mashpee and I emailed about it, never got a response. The other dates I have a wedding and then I will be in SC. Good luck with your race!

Leana - Thank you!! It felt great! I have to admit you have been somewhat of an inspiration to me. I saw that you signed up for the goofy before ever even completing a half, and I thought I can do that too! So for 2009 I am planning on signing up for the goofy. By then I will have completed at least 2 halfs tho. Of course now I see how gosh darn speedy you are and I am second thinking myself! ;) Oh and yes I am getting very excited about the DL half. This will be my DH's first race and our first race together, so it should be really great.

Dave & Erica - your kitty is soooo cute!! After we get settled in SC I am so getting another kitty! Erica, I bought the same shorts from target and they rode up on me too (most do). I stitched the inseam tighter by about 2 inches and now I have no problem.

Judy - I hope you heal fast :) Glad the surgery went well.

Well as far as my training goes, yesterday I did 3.5 miles and I jogged the whole thing! This is the longest I have jogged (or should I say ran?) consecutively. Average pace 11:02, not bad. Today I did an easy 2.5 on the treadmill and tomorrow is a 7 miler.

Becky

Helen's coming! Helen's coming! Great job on your 1/2. I am so glad that your foot is feeling better. Say hi to Tim for us.

No w/o for me tonight. I managed to catch an illness from my DD that has given me fever, body aches, and a sore throat.

Becky - You are so sweet! I'm not sure what I was thinking when I signed up for Goofy, but I'm going to make it! Good for you - going Goofy in 09! Way to go on jogging the entire 3.5 miles. Good luck on your 7 miler!

So tonight was my first official Bikini Boot Camp session. Except boot camp also scheduled nutrition night tonight, so I went to that instead of the WO. (That's OK by me, I'm alright with giving my legs another day off). All of us ladies were chatting before the session, talking about which BBC class we are in. One lady asked me if I was in the post natal boot camp group. :scared1:

Post natal.....me????
The only children I have are of the canine variety.....
Sigh....talk about a blow to the ego....do I look like I just had a baby..??

Sunny

I'm glad to see you again.

Judy

Good for you being restless. You're on the road to mental recovery and physical recovery will follow once you're back up and at it.

Stacey

Okay, 9300 feet, someplace in Colorado. Are you in Summit County, or another place near the divide? You'll notice Martha did the Leadville Heavy Half with her sister. That's because her husband wasn't interested in experiencing that unique feeling of working near his VO2 max above 10,000 feet.

Martha and I were in the Boulder Running Company last week, and we saw the same shirt, "sea level is for sissies," I would love 1. I did pick up the run 5430 feet shirt, and need to wear the thing.

At the running store I got a flyer for the Boulder RoadRunners, and sent an e-mail to the president. I was fearful the runners would all be ex-college flyers, with the guys my age still pounding out sub-7 miles. I explained my age and capabilities to the president and he invited me to show up Sunday morning at 8 am, and assured me I'd fit in.

I got there early, was introduced as 1 of 2 new folks, we both received polite applause (reinforcing my belief that all runners appreciate anyone who gets out there), and we all took off as a group. The group was about 40, and everyone apologized to me for being such a small group due to heat and a post-holiday weekend. I showed my sophistication by not spilling the fact I hadn't run in a group this large since high school.

We took off into the plains east of town, along a cottonwood creek, in the shade so early. They runners split off naturally into pace groups, and I ran with about 6 people. Folks wanting 5 or under did out and backs, and the rest of us ran a long loop for 7 miles. I was humbled to be running miles 5 to 7 with a walker, both of us doing about 9:30 per mile. He had once been an national caliber race walker, with a 50K time of 4 hours 20 minutes, which sure impressed me. After the run we congregated for fluids and treats, and talked about the run.

They have a track meet on July 19 at the CU track, and I'm going to volunteer to work the meet, and perhaps run a time trial mile or 2 mile.

I'm still struggling with the altitude, and my walker/pacer told me 6 weeks of training at altitude will make good progress with the adjustment process. 6 months is better, and many years better still. When I lived here I took that all for granted. I sure don't know.

Please take it easy in the heat and humidity, especially you Howard. I'm looking forward to seeing you in the fall.

Craig
