Wk of July 27 - WISH Walking/Running Club

Liz,

Salt packets are not necessary. Leading up to the race just lightly sprinkle some salt on your food. Preferrably Kosher salt, and not regular table salt (contains Iodine).

Or you can eat one pretzel twist per mile for your salt. Carbs to keep you going. :thumbsup2

Thanks Jeff! That is so much more do-able than the idea of salt tabs/packets. I barely salt anything as is.

Oh and Kosher salt is all I have in the house. :thumbsup2

Here's the link to responses to last week's thread.

Mel: Welcome back!! We missed you. It sounds like you got lots of good hill work/hiking and I hope your hip is feeling better. And from this day forward I will think of you as the goat whisperer.

Kristi: Congrats to Zack on his Fitness U. finals. Very cool bling. Zack is like his momma in that he's a happy athlete! :thumbsup2

Howard: I love how supportive you and Cam are with one another. :cloud9: Good attitude on the walk in the park. I think your progress is just amazing--you're making such great strides so quickly. A natural athlete, huh? No wonder you didn't need to train for the Goofy in the past.

You crack me up. You do your XT, feel really good afterwards, and so reward yourself with a run. I eat ice cream in such situations. Is it any wonder that your running pace is improving and mine is, well, mine just is? :rotfl2:

Aloha Jeff: Now I want a moobella too. Now that's a party machine! (I need to move to Boston.) Sure, Tracy's rubbing your nose in her day off. She runs on Mount Trashmore and you, you live in Hawaii. I think you win, even if you're always at work. :lmao:

Maura: I'm too late to guilt you into going to the gym for last weekend. Did you at least enjoy some brisket? Blobdom is one of my favorite states, unfortunately, and sounds much more relaxing than working on abs and stuff. (Thanks for the technical jargon, btw. :rotfl: )

Vic: I hope your training went well and quickly! I'm sort of sad that you spend all this time in Orlando and not in the parks.

Allyson: I hope you found the motivation to run. Me, I use bribes. (Run or clean house, run or clean house?) You don't need them, however. Congrats on your 3 miler and longest training run yet!

Stephanie: Don't you love accomplishing goals. I adore the fact yours are just like mine--not too long, not too far. Very manageable. :lmao:

Tracy: Wet-noodle lashing? You do have a little dominatrix in you, don't you? Great job on your 12-miler. You deserved your ice bath, NASCAR (wish it was more enjoyable for you) and, yes, even your ice cream! Happy belated b-day to your DGM!!! AFM? I like it! The big question is, what did you do with your day off? Did it involve teeth? Or a massage? (See dominatrix comment, above. :rolleyes1 )

Terri: I think your Tour de Living Room deserves its own bling. Good luck with your r/w training program and finding your ideal intervals!

Z: What a great reason to get started running! To run in someone's memory is a very special thing--thanks for sharing your story with us. I find our WISH team to be very motivating to me--sometimes we cheer, sometimes we push, and apparenly we sometimes lash people with wet noodles. :confused3 :rotfl:

Angie: Congratulations on listening to the advice of DH, channeling the voices of your WISHmates, paying attention to your body, and most of all for doing the hard work of running a shorter and easier distance than you wanted to. I'm excited for you! :woohoo: And I'm a proud member of the tortoise brigade--we finish strong, we finish happy, we finish uninjured, and there's a whole lot of us to party with at the back of the January pack! :woohoo:

Oh, and
We just ran for the run.
Sometimes we all need to hear this, yes? Thanks for reminding me.

David: Welcome to the boards. Doing the Disney marathon seems like a perfect conclusion to your honeymoon (although you might be talking to the right audience here). We can guarantee you that Disney will be a fun run if you hang with us! ;)

Lily: Great to see you here! Training begins for you next week--are you excited?? Great suggestion to bring a camera for trail training/runs/wogs/walks. I never think to bring mine, but I'm going to try and remember to do so in the future! :thumbsup2

Lisa: You're going to do great with your Beacon to Beach 10K, regardless of the time. You've been training for it, you know your body, and you're willing to run the best race you can under the conditions you have. You're going to rock! And keeping up with the weekly thread is a little like speed work, isn't it? It can leave me breathless, at least! Your 7-miler's pace deserves that little dance! :dance3: I hope that's the way you feel on race day, too.

Betsy: Welcome back to the weekly thread--it's good to see your smiling face. (You know what I mean. :goodvibes ) I'm glad you took the time to grieve for your relationship and have decided to remain friends. And it's a sign of your strength that you've kept focused on your training and IM event. :worship: You never fail to impress me (and would probably intimidate me on a course--in a good way, of course)!

Jennifer: A week off racing?? Just kidding! Will this be your first nighttime race? WTG with your training runs and hill work. It sounds like you'll be adding speed work, too. These fit nicely with your short- and long-term goals, which I have no doubt you'll accomplish.

Carrie: I have yet to respond to your RR for your first tri, but I know that congratulations are in order. Not only did you finish your race, but did so under some horrendous taper conditions and the challenges of an ill-marked course. You should be proud of all that you've accomplished. We're proud of you! I do so admire all you triathletes. :worship:

Thank you for the update on your FIL. He's been in my thoughts. Those Minnesotans are a hardy bunch, and it's especially good news that he's feeling better so quickly! For you and Scott as well as for him. Not selfish at all. Not at all! :goodvibes And Liz is right--this deserves an ice-cream moment! (What doesn't?)

Liz: I'm so glad you had a training breakthrough and found yourself enjoying your miles in an almost meditative way. It makes me want to turn off my iPod, too....

I don't know about the salt--precaution due to heat? I've not tried salt tablets, but many recommend them. And you already know this, but follow your training plan for the taper. Rest, give your body a chance to recover. Don't follow the path that leads to extra WO. It only leads to (taper) madness. Spend extra time stretching, if you must, or meditating.

Kira: You're going to do great with your first 1/2. You've been pretty active while on vacation, if I recall, even if it wasn't all running. And you've been building your base long before your trips. XT will help a lot, too. We'll keep you accountable on the Pilates and anything else you want to add. (It's not nagging, I promise!) I started to send you PD on finding your sapphire, when I realized someone else had already dusted you! Yay for finding the stone and getting it repaired. :yay:

MB Michelle: Your 7+ miler left you sore? In a good way, I hope, and evidence that you were pushing yourself toward your DL 1/2 goal! :thumbsup2

Claire: I know I posted this on last week's thread, but it deserves double hugs. How scary the mugging must have been for you--and how brave you are. And so calm! I can't believe you introduced your story with information about cupcakes. (Although you do know your audience! :lmao:) I hope you're recovering without too much stress or pain.

Ang: And how is your running going? ;)

Jackie: I'm glad to hear you're keeping up with your therapist's suggestions and that your hip is feeling better. It does--cross your fingers--sounds as if you're making improvements and you're feeling less pain on your runs!

Stacie: Cool design! It would look nice hanging above my TM...if I had my own.

ASM: I wrenched my shoulder this weekend in preventing a fall down slippery steps. I managed to avoid hurting my knees or ankles, but my shoulder is a bit sore. So I can run without any pain if I do so slowly (do I run any other way?), but I'm holding myself a little strangely. I imagine I look a little like Bela Lugosi. But attractive. :rotfl2:

Hello Debra

From your comments on the volunteering thread, am i to understand you and dood will be in Orlando in January, and I might see you at a water stop?

In advance, if you are, and I don't, sorry. Honestly I don't know what I see at the stops, but it isn't much. I seem to focus entirely on 2 cups of fluid and maybe a gu. If I don't see you, or anyone else for that matter, my apologies in advance.

By the way, is that Bela Lugosi, circa "Ed Wood?" For your sake, I hope not!

Troilus and Cressida? Have you seen "The Abridged Shakespeare Company" and it's presentation of Shakespeare in 90 minutes? They comment that "scholars call it one of the lesser plays, or as we like to call it, one of the not as good plays." Of course they also tell us they personally don't care for the comedies, since they're much less funny than the tragedies.

I managed 3 miles tonight on the indoor track at the Y - 40:05.
I am very happy with that time considering I haven't done much exercising in ages... :rolleyes1
Would have been a bit nicer to shave those 5 extra seconds off though.
It felt great to be back at it.
I am bound & determined after a very traumatic clothes shopping expedition yesterday. :scared1:

Ok, off to get me & the rugrat bathed and in bed!

Hello everyone.....

Hope all is going well on a Tuesday night...

AFM: I was trying to go walk after work like I always do and found out that I forgot my Garmi. Since I needed milk anyway I stopped by the grocery and got that and while that is going on the rain is a comin!! It's raining on my way out of the store. I get home and now it is pouring. I change in to my walking attire and watch the radar. Next thing you know dinner is ready. SO I eat and then check the radar again. Rain is leaving, I get out there and did 3 miles. Not sure if I like walking after dinner??
Also here is a photo I took with my cell phone of what I saw as I exited I75 and onto Sheridan Street heading east......

Nice beautiful rainbow.....

Take care everyone,
Tracy

Are you talking retirement, quitting, or just plain can't take it anymore? :lmao: Oh to be in your shoes...
Yes. All of the above! :teeth:

John Bingham recommended salt at beginning then a second later. I used Endurolytes at the Goofy weekend thanks again to Robert. I really felt strong after I got a second wind late in the event. I would say they are most helpful in the heat.

I love the quote too:
We just ran for the run.
This says it all.

That is a great rainbow pic.

I'm enjoying the last days of workdom. Did some shopping tonight. :moped: Then it's dig in and train real soon. I'm hoping for great weather now.

Hi everyone... just lil ole me with some training news...

Debra~ Thanks for the compliments, however I am not so sure about the "natural athlete" part. I played the following in life:

Little League Baseball from Minors to Majors.
Little League Basketball (1 year).
Football (Right Guard) (1 year in Junior High)
Baseball (High School Varsity & Junior Varsity - 4 years)
Golf (High School Junior and Senior Years only)
Golf (At Penn State - 1 year only)
Golf from age 10 through today (when I can)

(notice no running, cross country, track & field, soccer, etc.)

So I am not so sure of the "natural" part. I've had to work hard, when I've worked that is. :rolleyes1 I actually ran my first 5K in 2001. Nothing prior in the running department. :sad2:

Lily Darling~ You better be safe! Wear a helmet and keep it under 65.

As for tonight, here's the scoop:

Miles: 3
Time: 26:57
Pace: 8:59

Splits:
9:19
9:08
8:28

Have a wonderful night everyone!

:grouphug:

FYI: The Randy Pausch Interview is on ABC -Diane Sawyer- right now. (The guy you did "The Last Lecture." Going to interview his best friend and his wife in the present after his death last Friday.

-now back to your regularly scheduled programming-

I got in 3.5 miles tonight. Actually it was probably more. The school I run by was having meet the teacher night so there was a lot of weaving and dodging of cars. It was right at 30 minutes again.

Debra, This won't be my first night race; however, the other night race was my first 5k ever. While it didn't go exceptionally well, most of the problems stemed from it being my first race not it being at night. That plus it was an hour earlier than the one I'll be running next weekend, so it was probably hotter.

Lily - Congrats! Here's to a long "running" retirement! :goodvibes

Claire - Glad to hear you're ok and they caught the delinquents!

Tracy - great rainbow!

Debra - take care of that shoulder.

Kira
- you'll do fine at the Distance Run. You've been building your base, so just keep at it and you'll have no problems.

Cam - I followed your example tonight and did my 100 crunches! I have to say - yuck! (but the payoff will be good - I hope)

Hi to everyone else I missed. :wave2:

I got home too late tonight to run outside, so I went to the Y and swam a little over 1/2 mile. I'm so slow!:rolleyes1 I broke it up into 2 1/4 mile segments. Finished the first 1/4 mile in 15:15 and the second in 14:22.
My triathlon is in 3 weeks and it's a 1/4 mile swim, so I hope to cut down on the time a little more.
To give some bearing, my total 1/2 mile time was 29:37. I watched the triathlon race on Sunday (last Olympic qualifier for US) and they swam just under a mile in about 42 minutes.
In my only other triathlon swim experience (the FL 1/2 IM in 2004) it took me 1 hour 22 minutes to swim 1.2 miles.
Tomorrow's a run day. 3 miles on tap.

Terri

OK, so I have been :scratchin SOmeone (Jackie?) for AFM and then (as for me). SO, being teh bear of exceptionally little brain that I am lately, thaough Jackie was AFM, although I coudl nto figure out why she called herself that. BTW, I do have a firend who's screen name abbreviated is AFM, so maybe that makes me look a little better? :upsidedow Finally, this am, my brain kicked in and :teacher:, then  Voila! OMG, I cannot believe it ahs raken me several days, though. :rotfl:

Debra - I get to meet DOOD! Woo hoo! I'm sure we can find ways to make sure Craig notices us. :thumbsup2 Hope you recover gfrom your fall quickly!

Tracy - Aweseome pic! Of course, I was wondering why taht cool pic was just fro "AFM" and not for teh rest of us. :rotfl2:

Lily - FYI, you can't :moped: on teh race course. ;)

Howard - You've really been training lately. Woo hoo!!!

Jennifer - The night part may not have gotten you, but it's amazing what runnign while fresh will do fo you! GOod luck on the next race!

Terri - :rotfl2: You were at my practice pace! The good news would be tha tI picked up about 5 min for teh race. Not pretty, but faster.

AFM: Nada but cleaning house. Ugh. Too hot here fo rme to go out anyway. heck, teh sweat was drillping when I cleaned.

Hey all! How is everyone today?

I have a question... I am planning on doing the Run/Walk 1/2 Marathon plan from MfM. The mileage goes up to 10 for the Long R/Ws, but I'd like to maybe do 12 before the big 13.1. How exactly would you alter the schedule? This is the current 14 week plan's Long R/Ws:

3, 4, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 4, 8, 6, 10, 8, 5

Suggestions???

Wish I had time to post to everyone, but I just don't. Please know I'm thinking of you all!!! Hope everyon has a good day!

This might be a SUPER bad idea because I am such an over achiever but an idea is to take out one of the 4 or 5 in beginning, shift everything back then maybe do something like

3, 4, 5, 5, 6, 7, 4, 8, 6, 10, 12, 8, 5

:confused3
I know the plan does the up mileage then fall back in between so another option instead of doing 10 then 12

3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 4, 8, 6, 10, 8, 12, 8, 5

Or my last suggestion can you start plan earlier and put the 12 and 8 fall back in at end??? Ok hope that helps ????

Hi everyone!

Well, I am back. I got choked up just reading the thread. It feels good to be home (on WISH).
I can''t believe I start marathon training this week! I feel SO out of shape! But actually, I am in better shape than when I started my real training last year so its just perspective. I hope.

Disney runningnut - Welcome David! - Wow! 75 miles in one week! kiawah's double loop might play havoc on a bq - too many runners to dodge on second loop - But I wish you luck!

Thanks Angie! I don't mind adding in a few more weeks and starting earlier. It's my first 1/2 so I want to make sure I am well prepared.

Thanks again for the suggestions!

Stacie - Just be careful. There is such a thing as over training, which teh Penguin did several times. That's why he made the plan peak at 10. The plan works adn as you jump from week to week you will get a feel for that. I know it's hard to see now, though. Just be super careful, as I have seen so many injured by the time they get to tehevent. :grouphug:

Hi Cecilia,

Have you run Kiawah? I was there for the full in 2004 and 2005. I love the race. First class the whole way. The hardest thing about the double loop for me is about 2/3's of the runners are doing the half. At the 13 mile mark they all take a left to the finish line and I have to take a right to do one more loop. It is tough making that turn when you can hear the band, the cheering, and know that there is cold beer only .1 of a mile away. lol

The last couple of miles are on a bike path. Usually there are some walkers finishing up the the half. This isn't a slam against walkers, but sometimes they are walking 2-3 abreast blocking the path. They don't hear you coming up behind them if they have the Ipod's going. But I sort of like it, adds a little stress and keeps my mind active and not thinking about the pain :)

David

Hi all!!!

Sorry I haven't been around in a week (or two)... LTO for sure. Work has been busy, and I have been doing a lot of traveling down to Miami for fun stuff lately (Mercedes Benz Swimwear Fashion Week, anyone??)

Cam-- Way to go on that 5K!!! :thumbsup2

Claire-- OMG!! Glad to hear it all worked out OK, but that's awful!!!

Liz-- The salt thing is a heat precaution... it's recommended if temps and humidity look high (see: WDW 2007 full). It's something I really need to start doing before my longer runs down here...

Carrie-- That's WONDERFUL news about your FIL!! Still thinking about you guys... (Oh, and thanks for explaining "AFM"... I was  all morning...)

As for me.... I ran by the beach this morning. Even though it was in the 80s at 7am, it was the best run I've had in months.. 3 miles in 29:20.. the pace is a bit deceiving as you do a lot of dodging people and waiting for traffic along the road down here. I'm going to try to swing 5 miles before work tomorrow and hopefully it'll be full speed ahead from there. So long as it's pain free I really don't care about the pace... the pace will come back.

ETA: I almost forgot this, but wanted to add it here as food for thought.... As I'm sure you may have read, Randy Pausch, "The Last Lecture" professor died last week. While I was reading the story on CNN, I came across this quote and it got me thinking:

"I mean I don't know how to not have fun. I'm dying and I'm having fun. And I'm going to keep having fun every day I have left. Because there's no other way to play it," he said in his Carnegie Mellon lecture. "You just have to decide if you're a Tigger or an Eeyore. I think I'm clear where I stand on the great Tigger/Eeyore debate. Never lose the childlike wonder. It's just too important. It's what drives us."

I realized the sad fact that I'm an Eeyore runner. I don't know when it happened exactly, but if the pace isn't great or I don't PR or the weather is icky and I don't do well, I'm kicking myself. Even after I cross the finish line of the Goofy last year, I was ticked about my full time!! So I'm going to try to become one of those Tigger runners... just happy to be out there, happy to be running because I CAN and happy to accomplish what I can and make wonderful friends in the process... Every finish line... short run, long run, race 10K, half, full or Goofy.. should be a victory.

I finally booked for marathon weekend... and one piece of advice to all our runners... book something soon! My first, second and third choice hotels were all booked up already. (Boo.) But I'm in....

Kevin :earsboy:

Ugh. I tried to run this morning but between having done a night run last night and the fact that at 8 am it was already 85 and humid it just wasn't happening so I ended going about 2 miles and I'll get on the dreadmill later.

Hey Stacie - I've been following that plan for walking the half (mileage is the same) and have my first one in 11 days. Can let you know how it works out but I feel good about the distance.

Now if I can just get thru taper. Must..not...bike 2 hrs......

Hey to everyone!

Cecilia - great to see you back!

David - Welcome!

Thanks for all the info/advice on the salt. August in Chicago is generally like Florida. We're expected to be in the 90's with high humidity thru the weekend. Hoping it'll be a bit cooler next Sat.
