Wk of July 15--WISH Walking/Running Club

Morning team! I have 3 miles scheduled for this morning and then some more of that Target xt (becoming my regular Wed. workout!;) )

Krista--I like "character building run" instead of stonker. Even though if might be awful for the body, the psyche is building up that endurance for the 26.2. I too, have had those runs where throwing in the towel was the more appealing option until I remembered those that either have faced more adversity than me or those that simply can't get out and run. Makes my complaints pale in comparison.

DaveSW--Glad to see you back, and to know that it just was a LTO situation and not something more dire. Did you honestly think that we would just let you ride off into the sunset w/o so much as a goodbye--Don't think so buddy!

DaveWW--Much PD:wizard: and skill on your exam. I used to wish people "luck" on exams, until my dad, the Phd., told me that no "luck" is needed if the prepatory work has been done. I still think that a little luck (especially in what questions are asked) is not such a bad thing

Angie--WTG on getting the run in and yea for Bobby for running it with you.:yay: Hopefully, there will be no more thunderstorms for you today.

lourodrigis--I'm also a Hal Higdon gal. Even though I've completed a full before, I'm still using his Novice I plan. It's much more involved than the plan I used for my first full--and I'm noticing some great results. I do use one of the 3 mile runs (usually the 2nd one of the week) as a speed workout

mel--glad to hear that backing off of training has helped your pain ease. PD that it goes away for good!

WEll, I gotta run--get myself ready to leave the house. Have a great Hump Day all!

Kathy - Thanks for the update!

Lynne - Good luck!!! :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Kim & Kristi - I'm still hanging on. Trrip to the fair tonight, though.

AngieTuck - Yay for you and Bobby! I tried to follwo my advice to you last night. It was still a stonker, but every step I put in gets me closer to whre I was, right?

Mel - Glad you had a good run! Good for you for rescuing Jeff!

Krista - Way to put things in perspective. I really need to work on that.

SWDave - Good to see you!!!

I did 60 minutes last night. My mom told me if I didn't have anything good to say, not ot sya anything at all, so I'll leave it at that. Thinking of not signing up for Caost Gurd 10 K end of the month and wondering how I'll do CDC, but one step at a time and we'll see how it goes.

Hello, WISHers!

An easy wo for me today -- 30 minute run followed by some sprints. It was nice and cool and overcast, so it was a good run. Not sure how far I went total (I'll have to check gmaps) but I did my first mile in 9:00 so I'm happy with that.

Now I'm pondering an opportunity I've been offered for a part time job. It would be during the school year so I'd still be home when the kids are home, but of course you all know that the main concern is "what about my running schedule?" :rotfl2: It would help pay for the 2 trips to WDW, though...

Happy training, all! :)
Renee

ps - Dave - what kind of exam are you taking? Here's some PD for it! :wizard:

Hi everyone!

Thank you for the nice wishes and bon voyages for our vacation and cruise. We fly out of Philadelphia Friday evening and are looking forward to sipping Conch Coolers on Castaway Cay, dining, partying and indulging. Luckily we've signed up for the calorie free cruise on the Wonder and will not suffer any long term weight gain from our excesses this coming week. :lmao:

I wanted to share some health news... something that has been affecting my training, energy level, metabolism, and general health. I recently had routine blood work done. My tests showed an elevated TSH, indicating that my thyroid (which I have been medicating for for years) has slowed down even more. My TSH is at 6.7, the max normal is 5.5. The doctor asked me if I have been experiencing any symptoms (weight gain, low energy level, exhaustion, tiredness, low metabolism, etc.). I surely have. I have been struggling to get the miles in, feeling weak, continuously exhausted, etc. I've actually gained 10 pounds since I last saw him in February.

He is placing me on an elevated dose of Synthroid for the next month, then I'll have another blood test to see where I'm at. He'll make adjustments to the dosage then if necessary. He said once I get my medication regulated, and in my system, I'll feel normal, re-energized, my metabolism with increase and I'll drop some weight - which I should be with my recent and future running plans.

So, I see why my longer runs have not been as easy as they once were and that I am actually gaining weight when I should be losing it.

I am so glad this issue is being addressed now and I'll be in a good position medically for the CDC in August and to continue to train for it in the weeks to come.

Lilly ~ I've actually started to pack, but I have a L.... O.... N......G way to go.

Thank you for all the updates, I enjoy keeping up to date with everyone's efforts. I wish there was a way to bottle up the energy and enthusiasm generated here.

Happy training everyone!

:grouphug:

Greetings Racing Team -

Obviously, I have no training to report.

Jackie - Hey, I REALLY appreciate the extra half a mile you do for me, especially since right now I am idle. :thumbsup2 Can I put that distance you do in my training log?

Angie - Oh that's great that he got to jog. :woohoo: Despite what some shoe companies might think.....jogging is wonderful! I hope he can keep it up!

Minnie - Hold it! You can't come in here saying you got a Dream then not tell us what it is! Not fair! Come back!!

SWDave - Oh thank goodness. If you haven't had a chance to read the last two weeks posts, then you really don't know how worried we were! We missed you, but I'm so glad to hear everything is OK. :thumbsup2

Krista - I like that - a "character building run". :goodvibes You mentioned some amazing people there. I'll think of them too next time I feel like giving up.

WWDave - :wizard: for your tests! Thanks for the positive vibes for my foot. It's getting there.

Howard
- Interesting news...I'm glad you have an answer. Maybe I should get mine checked too....

Howard - So glad you got your answers!!!

My 5 miler last night was what I like to call a
lourodrigis--Welcome!!!! I really like using the Hal Higdon's training program, I'm using his novice I program for the Columbus marathon and I used his half program for the Flying Pig half in May. My DH has used the novice II program for his first full and the intermediate program for the Goofy Challenge in January and now for the Columbus marathon. It seems a little daunting (how about that 10 miler in the middle of the week on week 15?? ), but it doesn't seem completely over whelming. Yet. :)

aladdinsgirl - I'm doing pretty good with the plan so far. The running hasn't been too tough physically (yet). My big concern is how I will be able to find the time when work, kids, and some kind of sickness becomes an issue down the road. I kind of figure my early morning runs may end up switching to late day runs as I head into the fall/winter. I agree that those mid-week runs will be the toughest due to the time constraints.

I also need to find some other races b/w now and Disney because I'll go insane just running by myself. I'm chomping at the bit to run in a race just to get the feel of it. Philly 1/2 marathon may be my first race in September unless I can find something else.

I am following an 18-week training program I found online by Hal Higdon. Anyone else try this program?

So far (4-weeks in) it has been so good. However, the Disney marathon is obviously more than 18 weeks away so I am taking this program up to week 10 (15 mile LR), running the Philly 1/2 marathon in Sept, and then starting over again to do the entire 18 weeks for Disney.

It's easy for me to run in summer, timewise. However, school starts for the kids in September. I'm also interested to see how do when the fall and winter arrive.

I printed his off, and I'm trying to work on this too - I'm doing the 5K July 29

Mel - I am glad you are feeling better after a little break.

Kathy - great job training for Nike! And thanks for updating us on Erin & Lynne too.

Dana - lots of :wizard: for your shin splints.

Martha - I did get to the yoga!

Angie - I am so glad you both got to run together! :thumbsup2

Minnie - have a fabulous time in The World!

Ok, I did the yoga DVD as promised and it felt great.
I thought yoga was supposed to be relaxing though.
I don't know how that can be when you are yelling "Zack, go to bed!" and dodging toys on the floor while "relaxing." :confused3 :rotfl:

Zack (and I) were up way past 10pm last night! :scared1:
I am going to try to get to the gym at 4pm, before Weight Watchers.
BUT, if I can get him to nap today - that is exactly what we are doing! :cloud9:

And yay! Dave's back!!!

Dave: Good luck to you today!!!!:wizard: :wizard: :drinking1 :drinking1 pixiedust: pixiedust:

Kim

You did such a good job reminding me, and cheering everyone on -

:rotfl2: Raiders of the lost YARC :rotfl2:

Krista Thank you for your post!! I'm sitting here in tears, dripping in sweat wondering what I was thinking about this whole running business!! Every step I wog, my mind wants to quit, my body laughs at me... the dead frogs were out in mass (I'm visiting my parents while dd is at camp and dh working 70 hrs this week! Angola IN - lake, jet ski... peace... quiet) then those itty bittty teeny tiny pebbles get in my shoe... This is such a mind game... I'm old, I'm slow, I'm fat, and I dont want to go another inch... I have good encouraging songs on my ipod (love Wynona Judd - her live album I have on ipod - right before a song she talks about believing in your dreams, and then it goes into "WHY NOT ME?" so I can wog a few more steps...)

I hate all the whining I'm doing!! So thank you Krista for your post, I will put this behind me, and do 3 more miles tomorrow!!

I'm sorry. I've been wallowing in my own self pity lately and must have missed your struggles. It is so hard at first. Forcing yourself to get out there. Putting those steps in on stonker days. Sometimes not seeing much improvement. You will get there, though. One step at a time. Before you knwo it, you'll see your pace improve. Or, you'll realize that it's not as much effort as it used to be. Then, you'll be going further distances than you ever thought possible. Even if they are struggles, you'll finish and say, "Wow, I just did...." Hang in there!!!!! :wizard:

Sandy--I'm the biggest whiner there is! Please don't feel bad about whining!! :) And believe me, I was definitely preaching to myself last night when I gave mysef that pep talk. Like Carrie said, just hang in there and do the best you can and it will all come together. Just keep putting in the steps and believing in yourself. And most importantly, you must remember the #1 Wish rule: NO MORE CALLING YOURSELF OLD, SLOW, FAT, ETC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Capiche? :) :)

Sandy, Krista, Carrie, and anyone else - I have given myself the pep talk too. I usually think about Sunny and her back issues, and Cam getting into fabulous shape after heart surgery! That gets my sorry behind moving!

Howard - I have thyroid issues also. My endocrinologist told me last year the new high is 3.7. I am not a doctor, nor do I play one on tv, but I just wanted to throw that out there. I personally function MUCH better as close to a 1 as I can get. So, when I am up to about a 3, they up my dose. Here's to more Synthroid! :thumbsup2
Somehow I keep convincing myself that my problem is that my thyroid is off, but then I still test ok. :confused3 :rotfl:

Zack is napping, and I am going to also.
I am making no promises about exercising today since I got about 4 hours sleep last night.
I will workout the next 3 days though since I must look presentable to my boyfriend Johnny on Sunday night!

I also have a under active thyroid, been on the same dose of medication for about 18 years.

Don't worry about the whining we are all here to listen and offer advise or a kick in the pants depending on which is needed. Believe me I have done my fair share lately.

Hope you are all having a great afternoon.

Kim

Mel

I'm happy to hear you are back out there. Remember to go slowly, and take breaks as necessary for your health and fatigue.

The summer visiting faculty gig is going well, thanks for asking. Tonight is class #6 of 14, with the half way point Monday night's exam. The students are evening MBAs, all between 28 and 35, overall a quality group with a few members of the group very strong indeed. The hardest part for me as a new guy is always the first few sessions, I over prepare and over psyche up, so I can go in and blow them away. After those first few sessions it gets so much easier, as you've proven to them that you have something valuable to give them, plus you have begun to build 1:1 relationships that make each class easier.

Even at my home institution, where my reputation is well known and the students know what to expect from me before it all begins, I still sleep poorly, have a few nightmares, and I'm very nervous before the first session. Martha once asked my why I'm like that and all I could tell here was, "I'm always afraid I've lost my fastball."

When you speak with the Dean of the Pharm College, be sure to get specific answers to your questions about course load, length of contract, number of students per section, office time expectations, pay per section, and the like. Write up all the questions you have in advance and be sure to go through them all during your meeting. Also try to get a "feel" for the culture of the College. They are all so different, and all of us have better fits with some than others.

And if you go forward be sure to send me one of your business cards :wizard: .

Best to my health-challenged buddies, particularly fellow manly man Howard. Enjoy your trip and cruise. You deserve it.

Craig

Hey Everybody! I actually have some training to report on today! :cool1:
I went out this afternoon for a 4 mile run, however, I ended up walking most of the way. I got knocked down in my hockey game on monday night and landed on my back. So, my back has been quite sore the past two days. I really wanted to get out to run today, so I tried. I only ended up running for about a mile and a half and then I walked the rest of the way. At least I finished the distance!

I got no training done yesterday, since it was my birthday, DBF took me out to dinner and then we had cake with his parents. Tonight, we are going out to dinner with my family, so we have had a BUSY couple of days!

Now to try to catch up with everyone!!
monte-I hope the adjustment to your orthotics helps out and you are feeling better soon!
Lily--WTG on your run the other night! Sounds like you and DH are doing a great job!
Cecilia--Good Luck with your Goofy training! Enjoy the free time while the kids are at camp this week!
Judy--That is crazy about bucks in your backyard. I used to live in Goldens Bridge, up there by you, and I used to see some here and there in my backyard, but never FOUR in one place!
Jen--hang in there with the stressful situation, doesn't sound good.
Angie--Hang in there!
Carrie--Thanks for the update on Dave...glad to hear all is well!
Leana--Love the pic!

I know I am still not all caught up but I gotta go get ready to head out to dinner! I will catch up with the rest of the posts when I get home later on!

Hi guys, I got my hill workout in over lunch today. I didn't want to wait till this evening because it has been so hot lately, plus I really want to make it to yoga tonight as well since I was a bit of a lazy bum on Monday.

It was humid today! Not super hot, but 88% humidity, which for Calgary is insane. It didn't bother me too much though thank goodness! Apart from my 2.36 mi run on Sunday, this is one of my first runs since the half. No sense in starting off easy....so hills it was. I ran about 0.8 mi on flat ground then did 4 hill repeats (these are long hills, plus I get in jogs on flat ground at the top and bottom). I ran up the set of stairs they have at the big hill (a popular thing for folks working out over lunch), ran back down, then ran another 1.25 mi on flat ground to finish it out for 5 miles. I definitely pushed myself hard today and it felt AWESOME!!! Total time 59:17.

My aim is to now decrease the amount that I run on flat ground between hill repeats so that I can get more ups and downs in. I will be ready for those hills in San Francisco!!

Hi WISH Team!

Run by post... I've updated The WISH Team Calendar. Check it out and add your dates there.

Howard, glad you got it figured out and WISHing you speedy metabolism!

WWDave, you do it! I know you'll do well.

SWDave, glad to "see" ya stop by.

ummmm gotta get outside now. I'll try more soon.

Howard - Good luck w/your thyroid problem, my DH has been dealing w/the same issue for years!

For those of us suffering w/PF, I may have a w/out that might help. I've been water walking and it is really helping with the pain. Today I walked for 1.5 hours and I mixed up the w/out by using water dumbbells, for a upper body w/out, then I switched to water jogging. I dusted off my water shoes and said, "why not?". It seems to be helping. Try it out and let me know if you feel a difference.:cutie:

Hey Guys, thanks for all the well wishes on the test. I won't know the results for ten days, they send a letter. I was hoping I would find out today.

It was a long long day. Long drive there and back and lots of waiting when we got there. The meters and guages they had were different from what I use so that made it even more sporty. I did the best I could but they don't give any feedback at all on how you did.

Renee, it is the State Board exam for my Optician Licence. Means they have to pay mke more to do the same job I've been doing.

I didn't have time to walk this morning and I'm to drained to now. We left the house at 7 am and just got home at 5 pm. We did eat at a wonderful Mexican place for lunch and I had my favorite blackened catfish at Red Lobster for dinner. Erica made me comfort food last night for dinner, meat loaf and mashed potatoes with some fresh corn.

Have a great evening y'all.

Dave:hippie:
