Happy Birthday USA!

Dave- Thanks for the PI update! I'm concerned they will try to buy out Gatorade, too!:rotfl:

Leana- I've just been doing a yoga DVD and have found it helpful to my training. I'd love to take a class!

Stephanie and other WISHers running today- Good luck!

TnTsParty- Great job on getting DH out and running! Maybe he can beat you for the short runs but I'll bet you can out do him on distance. My DH is almost a foot taller than me and he always poops out after 6 miles. I'm so glad, too because I have to run way too fast to try to keep up with him until he tires out! Once he's done I can slow down to my normal crawl!:lmao:

No training scheduled for today. Lucky because it looks like we're going to have T-storms coming soon!

Happy 4th!

Happy 4th of JULY -

Have fun in the races today!

Love the GMA showing Disneyworld today, and the 1,000 people getting their American citizenship all sitting in front of the castle!

The BIG NEWS!!!!
Remember my niece Molly and her sneaker invention & being on the American Inventor show???
Ok, so how could anyone forget with me talking about it so much? ;)

Well, Puma - yes, the sneaker company - just contacted my sister!
They have been trying to track Molly down for two weeks. They love her & her idea!
Long story short - Molly is going to Boston to meet with them sometime next week!
:woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay: :woohoo: :yay:

(and thank God it wasn't Pearl Izumi's people calling! ;) )

I can't wait to hear more about this.:cheer2: :cheer2:

4.24 miles in 50 min today for an 11:47 pace. I'll spare you the weather forecast...it's no different than it was on Sat. :beach: I don't usually run with Gatorade but decided to take some today. Word of warning...blue Berry Gatorade clashes with toothpaste :crazy2: Do y'all have particular flavors that work better for you than others? Either my stomach didn't like blue or Gatorade's just not gonna be my thing.

I have experimented with nutrition a lot during runs. After I got over the texture issues with the gels, I've found they work best for me (though I sometimes miss the honey shots and peanut butter crackers). I still do one gel every 3 miles. I read in MFM you should have something every 45 min. That used to be at 3 miles for me, but I still haven't changed even though my pace has. I figure with as much as I sweat and the conditions here, sooner rather than later is best. I generally don't use them unless my run is longer than one hour (5 miles for me). I've also found that I can tolerate the richer, chocolate gels early in the run, but towards the end, I can only do the lighter vanilla flavor. I use Gu and Accel.

WWDave...you scared me, dude! I was just worrying about not being able to buy Clif bars anymore. Congratulations on your accomplishments in the Senior Games!

Susie...oh man, I forgot about the citizenship ceremony. That would have been cool to see.

Tricia...congrats on your runs! Let us know how those books are!

Kim...happy birthday to your DS!

Melissa...rockclimbing and kayaking sound like XT! Do you guys sell a lot of PI stuff in your store?

Kristi...that is so cool for your niece! Can't wait to hear how it turns out!

I'm trying to work out my training schedule for the next couple weeks 'cause we're traveling the next 2 weekends. I have 6 on tap for this weekend, then 10 next weekend. I may just bag the 10 and use that week as a rest for my foot since I have a 12 scheduled for the following weekend before the CDC taper starts.

Oh...and my deep thought of the morning. Knowing that heat escapes from your head, do women with tight ponytails and thick hair have a harder time cooling off? I wear a visor instead of a hat to allow the heat to escape, but started wondering if the ponytail thing might be making it harder for the heat to get out. I'm not likely to shave my head to find out if there's a difference, though :scared1:

Happy 4th of July!!!!!!

Hmmm...if you figure this out, let me know. I have wicked thick hair. I always walk/run with a ponytail pulled through my hat. I mainly wear a hat since I hate the frizzy halo I get with my hair. With a hat, I can usually tuck must of it up under there & no one knows. Also, I push my bangs up under there, so they aren't plastered to my head!

I never thought of myself of a visor girl... Maybe I should try that sometime.

Happy 4th Everyone!

I hope to bring Zack to the fireworks tonight if I am not too tired.
But I am working now & Chad is going in as soon as I get home, so no nap time.
We'll see... hopefully I can get a little xt time in though.

Mel - I'm not much for weird flavors, so I stick to orange Gatorade. DD likes the lemonade one, and that one's not bad either - tastes a lot like regular lemonade, actually! I can only imagine blueberry and toothpaste - yuck!

Kristi - That is so cool about Molly! Keep us posted.

Hey guys! Long time no talk! Let's just say it's been a crazy month at work. Hopefully it's calming down now. I have really missed you guys and have tried to keep up with the threads, but have failed miserably. I'm going to try to catch up with all of you this morning as I look back on 6,000 pages of thread, but I just wanted to post my e-mail to Pearl Izumi.

Hope everyone's have a great week!

Steve

To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to express my displeasure for your recent ad campaign touting “We Are Not Joggers.”

I am a runner. I do not claim to be a fast runner, or at least fast by your standards. But I run. I run in the rain, in the mud, in the snow and ice, through traffic, along desolate stretches of country road and through city streets. I run in 100-plus degree weather and 0 degree as well. I do this because that’s what I do—I run. I get up in the morning and I plan my day around my run. Not just one run, but many. I also occasionally run on a treadmill. And I’ve been known to run with an mp3 player. And not all of my miles are faster than your 7 minute pace. In fact, very few are.

I am sure, in preparation for your ad campaign, you completed much market research and decided that your forte into the running realms would best be suited by catering to true runners. I realize that you have been a strong competitor in the biking and triathlon market, but are fairly new to the true running industry. I am sure that you decided that there are other companies that have large strongholds on many aspects of the running community, and that in order to find your niche and stick out, you needed to develop a stand-out strategy as well as follow the American ideology of breaking out of the norm and “bigger is always better.”

I am curious how the running experts in your marketing department determined that this campaign would target your key audience. By reflecting your attitude, I feel you have alienated the true elite athletes as well as middle and back of the pack runners. So your target audience, then, is the front of the pack runners that aren’t quite good enough to be considered elite (but would like to be), as well as those who are brand new to the sport who find the slogans catchy and cutting-edge. I think there are two problems with this: those who are brand new to the sport may buy one pair of your shoes, but if they do not stick with the sport, that will be their only pair. The second problem is that the field of front of the pack runners who carry this elitist attitude is probably not as large as you would think. Let’s just take your 7 minute mile approach (even though you say pacing does not matter). Those who train at 7 minute pace will run a marathon slightly faster, probably in the 6:00-6:30 pace range, which produces marathon finishing times between 2:30 and 2:50. Just out of curiosity, take an average marathon and see what percentage of the runners finished within those times. And then, what percentage of those runners do you feel will buy in to your elitist attitude? Hope it’s a big enough market share for you. But to be fair, as a simple consumer, I am just guessing. I am sure that your extensive research into the field has led you to far more educated conclusions. I may be way off in your approach, and I hope I am incorrect in my interpretation of your intent.

Let me just conclude with this. I have no problem with your products and have been very impressed with the quality and durability of what you offer. I am an avid cyclist as well as a runner, and have recently ventured into triathlon as well. I own many of your products, and have been very pleased with the results. Unfortunately, I will no longer be purchasing from or supporting your company. I am well aware of your competitors within these markets, and while I have always found your product to be an excellent value, I will now purchase my running, cycling and triathlon equipment elsewhere. I am disappointed that you have taken this approach to the sport of running, but I wish you well in your business model decisions.

If you would like to contact me for any reason, feel free to e-mail me at the above address. However, please don’t expect a response at 5am this Saturday. I will be out for my scheduled 14 mile “jog” at that time.

Sincerely,

Stephen Fulkerson

Hey everybody! HAPPY 4th OF JULY!!!! I hope everyone enjoys their day today!

Just got back from my 4 mile run. Finished in just over 41 min., it is a bit humid today and I really felt it.

Since we had our family BBQ over the week, I will probably just do some relaxing today, fireworks look like they may be rained out tonight, weather doesn't look so promising right now.

Enjoy the day!!

Happy 4th of July everyone!!! Sorry I've been MIA this week, work has been crazy. I haven't had time to keep up with the thread, I'm hoping to go back and read it today. I have seen the Pearl Izumi backlash and I wanted to share my e-mail that I sent them this morning.

To Whom It May Concern:

I wanted to thank you for your recent “We Are Not Joggers” campaign. You unknowingly saved me quite a bit of money. You see, my husband and I are both runners, oops, I mean “joggers”—I’ve “jogged” my way through 1 full marathon, 3 half marathons and I’m currently training for my 2nd full marathon. My husband has run 2 full marathons, 3 half marathons (1 half and 1 full being Walt Disney World’s “Goofy’s Challenge Race and a Half”—ever heard of it?), and he is also currently training for his 3rd full marathon as well as a half Iron Man in the next year.

I wanted to mention that my husband and I both in our late 20’s/early 30’s, we both have professional careers, and we do not have any children. To put it simply, we have money to waste. And we do spend quite a bit of money on our passion: running. In fact, in the past week, I know we’ve spent about $1000 on new running shoes, because we have too many miles on our current shoes and new running clothes—apparently “jogging” racks up the miles on shoes just quickly as “running” does. Not a single dollar was spent on Pearl Izumi. I will never spend a single dollar on Pearl Izumi ever again. Which is unfortunate for your company, because as I said my husband is planning on training for a half Iron Man in the next year and then a full Iron Man in 2009, I have heard very good things about your triathlon apparel, I was planning on buying several triathlon shorts and shirts for his birthday in August. I guess I’ll have to go with Trek now.

All joking aside, I am very disappointed in your elitist attitude toward running. And I tend to take it personally. I guess you would call me a “back of the pack” runner. I am not fast. I don’t pretend to be. But I train just as hard as any other runner or walker on the marathon course. I run 30-40 miles a week during marathon training. I bike about 20-30 miles for cross training during marathon training. I lift weights 2 to 3 times a week during marathon training. I run back to back half or full marathons, so I’m basically training for something all year. Please don’t try to discredit how much and how hard I train. I also have quite a bit of determination and commitment, which I think is essential for any runner or walker to have. If you aren’t committed, then there’s no way you would be getting up at 6:00 on a Saturday morning to start a 20 mile run. If you aren’t determined then you will bail on the first sign of a bad run. That determination and commitment was what got me through my first full marathon. I’ve been dealing with knee issues all during training, things seemed to be going great in the marathon until mile 7 when I blew my knee out and had to end up walking the last 13 miles of the marathon. I know to you that walking is the ultimate sin, even worse than “jogging”, but to me, finishing the marathon was more important. I’d rather not be a quitter and I’ll do anything to ensure that I’m not. And the funny thing is, my medal looked EXACTLY like everyone else’s medals. We were all hobbling EXACTLY the same way as we walked across the parking lot post marathon. We were all wearing the same EXACT smiles of victory, because in a marathon, the only true competition is yourself and if you did the best that you could do, then you are victorious. At least to me.

So, go ahead with your elitist campaign, it’s fine with me. I don’t really care if you portray yourselves as the bully on the block. I like my Asics Gel Kayano’s too much to switch to your running shoes anyway.

Sincerely,

Krista Fulkerson
Marathon Runner

I have never written any company a complaint ever in my life. If something makes me mad, I usually just quietly boycott it, but this was far too important to be quiet about.

I'm off to read the last few pages, I'll be back to talk!

Happy 4th everyone.

I went out this morning and got 4 miles in before the rain. The heat and humidity was already present though. I did it around 11:00 minute miles and I felt fairly good afterwards so I may try that pace for a little until I can get my training base back.

We will be at Disney tomorrow through Saturday so we will be sure to say hi to Mickey for everyone.

Someone appears to be fussing now and since Lynnda is out shopping I better get over to see what it is about.

I will catch up on everyone later.

Bill

Had a totally awesome 6.2 miler today! Originally had planned an 8 miler, but I took pity on DaveWW. I was cruising along enjoying this beautiful 4th of July when about mile 3 Dave asked me to slow down!! He tried real hard to blame wanting to slow down on his performance this past weekend...didn't work then, ain't gonna work now Dave!!:lmao: I really have to savor this day that I wore Dave down!!!!:cool1:

Hope everybody has a really safe 4th!!!!

I was working and missed Molly on TV, what did she invent? Please share for those of us that don't know.

I went out for a nice 10K with my Pretty Princess. It was hot but an occasional breeze helped. I started feeling tired at about 3 miles, I guess the weekend's effort was finally catching up with me. I had to ask the Pretty Princess to slow down a bit and I'm sure she will never let me forget that. She has waited a long time for me to say that.

I have to deside which race to do on the 28th. Last year at the 5K run race, I was dead last, since I walked. They have a walk race also that I would probably win. So should I do the walk race and get my plastic trophy or walk the 5K run race looking for redemption and take a chance on another DLF?

Have a great day y'all.

Hey all - Happy 4th of July!!!! We don't have a 4th Race here. There is one on Saturday, but I ran it last year and it wasn't really worth it. It didn't benefit any charity and the course was blah (so was the t-shirt), so I am saving my money for something more meaningful. Instead, I plan to run 3 miles later when it cools off and then Saturday I have 8 to do.

Instead of getting my run in this morning, I took the girls and DH strawberry picking. This is pretty much the last week of it so I needed to get out there. The berries are already smaller. DD6 (Emma) enjoyed it, but she isn't into working too hard. DD4 (Kate) loved it. She was digging in the rows with me and filled up her little bucket pretty quick. She also stuck as many berries in her mouth as in bucket, but it was really cute. DH says that she has more of my personality when it comes to dirty work. I guess I am not afraid to get it done!!!

Mel - I wear a visor and a hat, just depends on the day. I bought a new tech hat and it doesn't heat my head up as much as a regular hat did. I started wearing hats/visors when I ran a WDW and now love it. I don't have as much sweat in my eyes and it holds my wispy hair back. As for hot pony tails?? Not sure, I have pretty thin hair. My pony is always dripping wet and hot, so I can imagine that it would heat your head more. Last summer I wore 2 ponys sometimes and that was nice. Didn't the other Mel wear a whole bunch of braids last year because her head got so hot? I don't remember if she said that helped or not.

BTW Mel - Your pace is really speeding up. WAY TO GO!

Kristi - Are you feeling better???

OK, I should get some things done around the house. It feels like a Saturday, but I know I have to go back to work tomorrow... Booo Hoooo!

I have to say you guys, I am so moved and impressed by the letters you are writing. I really hope those folks at PI take them to heart. I can't believe they thought that was a good advertising campaign. Seriously...

For the hat/visor question....I really only wear a hat if it is raining. For those fly aways Goody makes these great Stayput headbands that I love.
http://www.goody.com/Products/Collections/StayPut/Womens/Womens.aspx?itemNum=556
I have gotten a gazillion of their Stayput elastics through the last few races I have run and I really like them.

For the Gu questions...well, I've never tried Gu, only Sport Beans and Shot Bloks. I've used them for any run 8 mi or more, and try to get them about every 45 min or so.

For those of you who don't like Gatorade my Bikini Boot Camp instructor sent us this recipe for homeade sports drink since she finds Gatorade too sweet. Thought I would pass it along:

Hi, everyone! I posted on the race reports thread, but wanted to thank all my fellow joggers and WOGGERs for keeping me motivated this year enough to improve my pace by nearly 2:00 per mile, even if I still haven't gotten my sub-40:00 5k time yet. ;)

I've done this race the past two years
2005 -- 50:12 (pace 16:09)
2006 -- 47:19 (pace 15:16)
2007 -- 41:19 (pace 13:18)

mile 1 --12:51 (best 9:38)
mile 2 -- 13:30 (best 9:22)
mile 3 -- 13:33 (best 10:19)
.12 miles -- pace 11:59
Finish time according to my Garmin -- 41:19 (pace 13:18)

It's good to see improvement. Even if I'm not meeting my ultimate goal, I'm glad to see the change in one year.

Cam, what a huge improvement!! You should be so proud of yourself. I'm sure you will hit your sub 40:00 goal soon!

Hey all! Just posted my race report on the other thread but wanted ya'll to know I PR'd the 5K--finished in 22:53:cool1: I also realized that I much prefer going longer and slower--those run fast for short distances just kill me; don't much like the "I'm gonna be sick" response my body tends to give me!;) Oh, and one more observation from the morning--not one pair of Pearl Izumi running shoes to be found! Hmmmmmmmmm:thumbsup2 And interestingly enough one guy finished bare foot; and wasn't Kenyan--wonder what he was trying to prove. The guys that did finish one and two were under the 14:00 mark and both kenyan! Okay, gonna go hang with DH b/c I have to work this weekend so this is our only day together this week! Happy 4th all!

And many thanks to all those currently serving or have served our country in the past for protecting my freedom!
