Wk of Jul 9--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Sunny – Glad you had an awesome time on the camping trip with DS. The pics were great! Congrats on the wonderful finish time in the Mother/Daughter 5k. :cheer2:

Dana – It’s great that you’re feeling much better. The pics of the boys are too sweet.

Jen – Congrats on the 4 miles!! :cool1:

Christa – Gorgeous pics from the show. It looks like you guys had a great time.

Anne – WTG on the 5 mile pace. It is amazing how far you’ve come in such a short period of time. :woohoo: :cheer2:

Tiff – Sorry to hear your energy’s been lagging as of late. I hope your doctor can offer some insight as to what may be causing the problem. Do you have a history of anemia? That can definitely plummet your energy level. Congrats for signing up for the 1/2.

Kristi – Too scary about the coyote sighting. Better safe than sorry. Glad to hear you’re picking up some speed in your legs. My DH is also running the 1/2 while the two DD’s and I act as the scream team.

I did a 15-miler yesterday so I’m cross-training today. Living in the Adirondack Mountains is definitely prohibitive for picking up GPS signals on ones Garmin. I curse at the little contraption frequently since it is basically useless on the majority of my long runs. I started an advanced pilates class last week and it really kicked my butt. Luckily I enjoy pain so I am looking forward for some more punishment before work tomorrow. I can’t wait to make my January ADR’s. I voted on the WISH meet polls.

Best of luck to all with training this week!! :wave2:

Mel - I couldn't see teh customized bracelet, but everyone else seemed ot like them, so I know I would! ;)

Susie and Kimber - Welcome!

Solo - Ouch! Yese, better now than in 3 months and at least you have qualified ATs at your disposal!

Thansk for all teh pics!! Awesome!

Sunny - SO sorry about the new pains.

I knwo I missed a lot, but 3 days off has me wayyyy behind.

Dh and I did 5 Saturday. I had stomach and dehydration issues, but kept the migraine at bay with lots o' water later. WHich reminds me, time to fill up my cup. ;) My legs wer ok, though. His were not. He was kind of glad, though, because he needed something to proe that we've been slackers.

I also did some xt tubing down a river Saturday paddling the arnmms fo rme and my nephew who deemed himself old enough to be in his own tube this year. I love him, but it's hard to navigate with a hanger on. Funny, the poeple who ok'd him to be by himself were nowhere around when he got stuck in a bend in teh river. :rolleyes1 I needed the extra workout, though, adn he is pretty cute. :teeth:

I walked for 30 mins. yesterday before work and hope to get a workout in tonight after work.

I received information from Teams in Training the other day, so I'm really getting geared up for the marathon. Still haven't found anyone to go w/me, but that's ok too...solo trip here I come. :cool1:

Greetings all.

Yesterday I did an hour on the TM and still felt strong, but I didn't push it. I had a LOT of work do outside this weekend. The logistics of me going on vacation are stupefying. I have an unbelievable amount of things to do. And I really don't want to leave my girls. This trip is so not worth it.... :sad2:

But anyway, the alarm went off at 4:15 this morning and I just couldn't do it. I was too exhausted. Plus...OK gentlemen, don't read this...I am suffering the effects of sitting around in my wet bathing suit too long on the 4th, which is making me miserable. :guilty: Ladies, you know what I mean.

Anne - I like the way you think but I'm not that lucky. We aren't going on a cruise, we are renting a villa, actually for three weeks, but DH and I can't stay that long. (NO WAY could I be away from my girls that long. This is the longest time in over 20 years that I've had my mare that I have been away from her. I am TOTALLY anxiety ridden!) If you want to see it....here it is....

http://www.tuscanynow.com/Rentals/Cards/PCCArd.aspx?ProductID=1685

Plus, don't forget, we have all four of my husband's kids, plus my BIL and his daughter....

I think I'll be getting a lot of training in! :thumbsup2

Melissa - DH has two ocean-going kayaks he wants me to try. I'm kinda nervous about that, since I can't really swim. I think I'd prefer a small pond-going kayak, or a canoe would be even better! Speaking of which, for the trip to WDW in Sept I have purposely left two days with no plans because one of the things I have always wanted to do was rent a canoe at FW and go up the canals. I can't wait!

Jodi - Thanks for the link. I'm going to check it out. :thumbsup2

Dena - If you ever want to email back and forth with me to keep us on track, I'd do it. I started WW three weeks ago and I am really having a hard time getting going. :guilty:

Kevin - Doing dishes is such a dangerous task! Please refrain between now and January. ;) How are you feeling today?

Dave - I love love love the WL! Have you ever been there? Sorry I missed you before you left for vacation but I hope you have a great time. :moped:

Sunny - Oh great pictures! It looks like you guys had a blast! I love you comment about no fashion police! Ain't it the truth! Oh wow! You and DD look great! Hey, you're gettin' back in the groove. :woohoo:

Dana - Great pictures! That Michael has BEAUTIFUL eyes!

Mel - I'll venture over to the events thread as soon as I am done here. I think we are leaving Sunday night, though, so we can't do any Mon morning stuff. We are staying at POR so we will be there at 4:00 on Friday. We are having out post-Half dinner at Citrico's. :goodvibes

Christa - I concur! You look mighty purdee! :teeth: Were you in Oklahoma??

Hi, everyone! I have to catch up on the last few days, but wanted to check in.

I checked the official results this morning and they were so ““off”” that I actually wrote to the race director to ask them to correct my time. It is off by 42+ seconds from what the clock said at the finish. Even Howard and Jess commented that I was 45:06 and my Garmin was close to that, so I know we were right. And that is more than 10 seconds different for the pace. I have done 11 5Ks with this company since March 2005, so I am hoping they will get this fixed.

I am so glad I followed up on the imprecise 5K results. I had a note from Thursday night’s race director saying they corrected my results:

He said my actual results were “45:06.2 14:33/M” and went on to note:
“you were right....seems a bandit ran across the finish line and times were off by one around place 400 or so.....thank you for pointing this out.”

We did 5 miles yesterday, on a trail. :faint: Geez, if Melissa and all the others who do trail runs were not my heroes before, they certainly are now. :worship: That was soo tough! Those first 3.5 miles (before we got back to the track) were among the hardest I have ever done. I gave Howard so much grief for not warning me what the trail was like. I had no idea there were at least 6 BFH’s! The first mile was about 15:12, I think, but then I stopped paying attention to pace and worked on breathing and form. We stopped several times to cross roads and to look at historic markers. All very interesting and certainly a challenging workout, but I still feel like I need to fit in 5 fast-paced miles.

Back later to catch up on everyone, but wanted to let you guys know I am still training.

Carrie-- thanks for the link, what an inspiration.

Judy-- following on with your TMI: My tankini just isn't fitting the way I'd like since I gained 12 lbs. So I bought a pair of men's Speedo swimming shorts (not the obscene Speedos) to where with the top. Talk about luxury. The mesh lining dries in minutes so no worries  Plus I discovered I could run in them (their long enough to not bunch up), and they have a little key pocket. I wore them to the 5K and tucked my single car key away and had nothing to carry.

Of course the tankini top/men's swimming shorts combo isn't the most stylish thing going, but I'm not that big into style anyway :lmao:

Kevin, I'm going to have to go back and find out about your back problems. :wizard: for a speedy recovery.

Cam-- I'm glad you got your results fixed. Great job!

Sara-- My Garmin has gotten so flakey that I rarely use it anymore. I'm hoping to get one of those new "305" series that is supposed to be outstanding in mountains, cities, trees, etc. Just have to plan a bank robbery first...

Tiffj-- Congrats on signing up. A Mother/daughter race is awsome! How will you get to the start line from off-site? Money is a major factor for me this year, too. In fact, at this very moment the trip is impossible. But I never let the impossible stop me from planning. :thumbsup2

Sunny

Cam - I did a trail run yesterday also. My trail is an old converted railway trail, so it is smooth. But, there is no shade in the morning, so that was the pits! I guess farther along there are more trees, but now where I was running. I live a mile (exactly) from it, so I ran there, ran 1 mile out and 1 mile back and then back home for 4 miles.

There is a trail run here in Septemeber on county park trail. I asked if it was smooth and they told me they move the branches out of the way. Hmmmm, that sounds trecherous to me. But they said it was a fun run, so I am torn.

Hi all!!!

Sunny-- Great pics!! I actually hurt my knee, not my back (whilst putting away the dishes).... but now I'm all worried about some unknown back injury!!! :confused3

Mel-- Those bracelets are a cool idea! :thumbsup2

Tiff-- Hooray for signing up!!!! :thumbsup2

Carrie-- I love that link!!

Judy, et al-- THe knee feels a bit better today then it did the past couple of days. I still had some stiffness when I woke up this morning so I decided not to run at that time. I did see the AT here at work this morning who told me she believes it is muscular (as opposed to a ligament situation) and that I just tweaked it since I can walk on it so well. Her advice: ice and rest. (And yes, she laughed at me for a good long while when I explained how I did it.....)

Well shoot, I hate having nothing to post about my run. I may try to get out there this evening if I feel well enough.

Happy training!
Kevin (Solotraveler) :earsboy:

Okay, coming back to try to start catching up with everyone!

Dena – Your vacation sounds like it was jam-packed with fun activities! Congrats on making the commitment to get back on track. We’re all with you!

Kevin – Your carb-loading plan sounds great. I am thinking DH and I may head off site Saturday night to an Olive Garden. At least I am familiar with the food and don’t have to worry about it upsetting my stomach. I also noticed Wolfgang Puck’s has some pasta options and Rhonda and I LOVED it there Minnie weekend. Hmmmm. . . Rasta Pasta, huh?

Pat – Your Saturday LW sounds wonderful! I had to :rotfl: at the squirrel story but I’d have been awestruck about the deer and fawns.

Sunny – those pictures are AWESOME! You must be so proud of both your kids. Congratulations on fighting through the pain to be able to share those special times with them. :lovestruc

Dana – You are an amazing photographer! Your DS’s are really cute, too!

Wow, Christa, I don’t think you could be any prettier! Great smile! Looks like you were having a wonderful time!

Anne – GREAT pace!!! I am so impressed with how much you have improved your pace so quickly! Definitely reminds me I am NOT working hard enough! ;)

Tiff – So glad you and your DM signed up for the half. Can’t wait to scream for you on Main Street!

Kristi – very scary coyote story. Glad you are safe and sound!

Carrie – That article had me tearing up. There was so much in there I could relate to. Thanks for sharing.

I’ll be back later to catch up some more. Hope everyone is great!

[Well, ladies and gentlemen, I have finally done it. I managed to make it nearly one entire year in this happy group, and now I've gone and done it---- I've hurt myself.

Did you forget to stretch before you ran? Nope Did you go out too fast? Nope! Actually, I tweaked something putting away dishes last night. At the time it was just a little twinge on the inside of my knee and it didn't bother much at all for the rest of the night. This morning, however, it was very tight indeed. I stretched really good and tried to give it a whirl, but that wasn't happening today. So I'm icing it down and taking the day off. My best guess is that it's muscular as opposed to something more serious, but if it lingers to Monday I'll have one of the ATs at work look at it. I guess better this happen now than 3 months from now, right??

Wow, that is exactly how I feel. Well, not the knee, or the dishes part, but the being happy-go-lucky in this group for a year and them "BAMM" struck by an injury while not even training. One of my docs claims the pneumonia is probably the cause of the herniated disk. Someone here at work said that is actually kind of common among athletes (to herniate a disc with pn, rather than during training). My research has shown that a disc can go out while brushing teeth or just about anything. Don't know if yours is disc related or not, but I hope not!

Cam-- My terrible planning last year put me in deep sleep during dinner time the night before the marathon and I ended up eating two bagels and drinking two slim fasts in my room for my "big carb dinner". I don't recommend it, but it does prove anything will do.

MelR-- I went back to last weeks thread and saw the Boy running his race. How precious! He looks so proud.

As for kayaks, we are the "pond-going" kayak type so far!

Kristi-- we used to rent a house on Sunapea when I was growing up. I haven't been in that region for years. Now we always head for the White Mountains. I'll have to keep it in mind!

Magslite-- I've lost track of your injury. How are you doing?

As for me, My pain is mostly isolated to rising in the morning and the last two hours before bed. It takes me about 10 minutes to manuever my body out of bed (excrutiating). I then stand like a hunched over pelican, unable to put any weight on my right leg. I use furniture to make it across the room, each step putting a little more weight on the right, with the back still ~30 deg. hunched. Using the toilet is excrutiating (but necessary), and then I start to straighten up and put weight on my right. Then for about an hour I can move fairly well but not move my neck (especially down) or bend down. Then, its back to 95% normal for the rest of teh day. By nightfall I find I am freezing my lumbar section and starting to hunch over again. Then to bed and the whole process starts up again.

The oral steriods did absolutely nothing. I haven't called back yet. I don't know what they can do for me. I don't know if this is just a slow healing process or if I still need intervention. My worst fear is to let it go on for a couple of months and then come lat Fall mess up my training with surgery or something.

So my current plan is to work out hard for teh next two weeks and see how I feel. It seems the pain is less on my more active days, especially when I stretch really, really diligently. So I'm also thinking of taking up Yoga if I can cheat the space-time continuum. There just aren't enough hours in the day...

Sunny

Oh, Carrie, what an awesome story!! It had me tearing up!!
Judy, Judy, Judy :rotfl2: So very sorry, kiddo. Maybe MIL will be occupied with the grandchildren!! Don't hurt yourself trying to get everything ready to be left, please. I couldn't get the link to work, though.
Cam, What a great job of getting your (and lots of others!) time corrected!! Hooray for your trail run, too! Hope you had fun in Atlantic City!

The 5K mother/daughter results are up. We came in 15/48 with a chip time of 33:17. We were SLMx2

Wow. That's amazing Sunny!

So, uh, Sunny...is that what you're doing next? :thumbsup2

:goodvibes

Sunny -- I couldn't access the event schedule, can you? I am curious as to what event he is doing in Delaware since I thought the Delaware Marathon in May is the only one in the state. I'd love to know if there is another one here.

Mel-I think I forgot to tell you , I am so jealous you are getting to do the Race for the Taste. It has a really cool medal!!! Maybe next year.....

Judy- I hate that you are dreading your vacation so much. Please try to enjoy yourself at least a little bit :dance3:

Sunny- Hope your feeling better! We are just going to drive to the start. I figure we got up & took a 3:30 a.m. bus we can do that to drive too. That early we should have no problem getting in. If DM wasnt paying for the house we definately would not be going.

DH and I drove to the start even when we stayed on property. It is really not difficult and personally I like having my car there at the finish. We'll be off-property also, so I will be driving again.

Hi to all my new training buddies!

I loved the pictures - DD7 can't wait to go back to Sea World. We were there at Christmas and she is STILL talking about that Shamu show. She is excited about the new one.

Sunny - I know about mossy rocks and took a dive in a river in TN. It was pretty funny after I recovered enough to laugh. :rotfl:

I am thinking of all you plugging away with injuries. I am impressed that you are still doing what you can even though it must be frustrating.

I biked on Saturday - 14/15 hour and rode for an hour. Could have gone faster, but I was riding with a friend and we just had fun and talked, too. The hour flew by! I ran last night and did 3:1 R/W with an extra five minute walk in the middle for 50 minutes and went 4 miles. Yay! I was so happy and proud of myself. I actually kind of enjoyed it!
