Wk of Jan 7--WISH Walking/Running Club

I've got a question - what's the significance of the names in green (first post)?

Eva - Welcome! I started with the Minnie 5K last year as a complete newbie - that's how I found this group.

Blueroses - Congrats on the job.

It's so much fun reading everyone's race reports and seeing all the pictures!

Ran 3 miles this morning. Wanted to do more, but am trying to build up distance slowly so I don't hurt the shins like I did last time I did too much too quickly. Then came back and took the dog to the park, and we walked up there, so I probably added another mile with her!

Jackie

Thanks, everyone!

Hockeychic, yes, this shouldn't impact the Minnie unless the product I'm working on releases the week of the race. Otherwise, it should be better for me as far as training since the job is by my gym.

escape, the names in green are new people to the thread.

MiniGirl, the elliptical is a great tool for losing weight and for cross-training, but running has a different effect on the body. The movement is slightly different, plus there's the impact on the skeleton, and fact that in running you're actually having to lift your body. You don't lift it as much as when you walk up stairs but you're still fighting gravity. Or to put it more concisely, running or walking is the best training for running. And running outside feels a lot different than running on a treadmill.

Still, there's reality to contend with. The weather in Seattle means that I'm not going to be running outside for months. And exercising on the elliptical I have at home is better than not exercising at all. Above all, if you're new to all this, take it SLOWLY. I used intervals (walk then run, say 4 minutes then 30 seconds to start with) when I made the transition from walker to slow runner.

escape--I believe the names in green are people that are planning/signed up for next years marathon weekend.

 Hi to all! I have enjoyed reading all of the race reports and I am totally impressed with all of you. What an accomplishment and something you will be proud of forever. I'm so glad to be back with you all and looking forward to the training year ahead. I don't plan to do too many races to prepare. I don't enjoy 5Ks but I may look around for a few 10Ks in the fall just to get the feel of running in a big group again. My training schedule has changed from what I did for the 2007 half. I now work out twice a day, six times a week in an effort to get to the illusive 10 minute mile. I work with a trainer 2 times a week but we are concentrating only on strength in those sessions. The cardio is up to me! I need to drop a ton of weight so I am eating much better than I have in recent months. No more Dunkin Donuts and Micky D's for me - for a while:). Reading all of your reports has had me thinking the unthinkable; MAYBE I CAN DO THAT FULL AFTERALL! No commitment yet, just a crazy thought in the back of my mind.

Have a great weekend everybody. We expect temps near 70 so I'm thinking it will be nice for my long run. (Long being a relative term you understand!)

Hey! How far are you in your training?? Bree (Zoegirl) me and my sister are doing the 1/2 marathon in April. That gives you plenty of time to train (12 weeks) I am making up a plan for sis. Bree you can have a copy too!
Bree is also trying to get back to 10 MPM or faster so you two could also run together.

Bree and I did run yesterday (like I said in my earlier post). She did a little over 3 miles and I did a little over 6. I thought my legs were feeling good, but they hurt.

DD8 did the mile run in PE yesterday! She did a 13 MPM. She is so proud. She was so steady...I went to run with her after my run with Bree so I was nasty. Her PE coach though I had dressed that way to come and run with her. :rotfl:

Okay, so I didn't drown--however, at times, I swear we almost needed an ark!:rotfl: But, I actually felt great today--maybe I should pray that it rain buckets and be in the 50s on marathon day!;) Except my poor, wonderful Brooks are full of water right now! Hey, at least the puddles at the end washed off all the mud from the beginning of the run (gotta be positive, right??)

But here are the details

Mile 1: 9:12
Mile2: 9:19

Mile 16: 9:15

THe end of mile 14 and most of mile 15 were uphill getting onto the Big Dam Bridge--I thought I was going to die--but then mile 16 was all downhill baby!:woohoo:

susie--I didn't buy tickets for the spaghetti dinner the night before hte race--my daunt is coming in town to watch and so we'll probably have a family dinner--but I will definitely be on the lookout for those Minnie ears and WISH shirts!!!!:thumbsup2

eva--Welcome!!! I have two small kids and training is hard b/c of finding someone to watch them. Luckily I have a gym that offers really reasonable childcare--so I do most of my mid-week runs on the treadmill. But I do try to get outside once a week, usually on a weekend, b/c being outside in the elements is so totally different than being inside on a TM (ie today in 50 degree weather and pouring rain!)

Christa--Congrats to your DD on her run!:cheer2:

Blueroses - Congrats on the job!:cool1:

Eva - Welcome to the WISH group!

Nucpharm
- Good luck on the 16 miles!:goodvibes

nucpharm, great run! What equipment are you using to time your splits? A Garmin or a regular stopwatch or what?

My ddad got me a Garmin 205 for Christmas, and now I"m wondering how I ever lived without it!!! And amazingly, it stood up to all the elements wonderfully!!:cool1:

Christa - Not that I revel in others pain or anything, but I am REALLY glad I am not the only who thought they were pain free until their next run. I have not felt ANY pain at all since the full on Sunday, so today I decided to do a little strength work and go for a 20 min jog. Well, the strength stuff went great, but as soon as I started jogging my little legs started screamin'. They really weren't prepared for running again just yet.

Tell DD congrats on her mile!! By the way, I think I saw your girls somewhere on the course cheering people on. She was wearing a WISH shirt right?!

Nucpharm - Congrats on your 16 miles. After my 20 (min) earlier your 16 (miles) sounds incredible!!

Dana

This may be a stupid question, but what exactly is a garmin and how does it work?

I currently have the Nike+ shoes that link up to my ipod to keep track of my mileage and minutes/pace, but I am thinking these may not be the best shoes for me, but I want to have something to keep track of my mileage, etc....I hear many of you talk about garmins, but i am not sure what they are/how they work.

Thanks!

Laurie

Dana - Yes, my DDs were at Boardwalk. DD8 had on a WISH shirt. I told them to yell for anyone they saw wearing one.
My legs were hurting...I was on mostly uphills and may have been going too fast. I am having trouble trying to slow down to let my body recover. I am iching to really get back out there and go full force!

Is anyone else really tired? I have never been tired like this after a marathon...but I also have never ran that far in heat like that.

Thanks for all the encouragment for DD8!

Nucpharm - WOW! Great 16 miler!

Blueroses: Congratulations on the new job. It sounds like it's really a good move for you in terms of overall quality of life.

Minigirl: Thanks for the question on the elliptical and to everyone who responded to the question. I've wondered about it myself, especially since there's no way I'll be training outside for the next few months (I live in Fargo). In training I'm going to try and balance out treadmill work with the elliptical.

To shift to running, I'm using a walk/run strategy; thanks for those suggestions, all! It seems to be be solid strategy for avoiding injury. I did my 30 minutes of walk/run today and actually thought, "I can do this." (This is a far bigger deal than it probably sounds.)

Nucpharm: Congrats on your 16 miles. You're an inspiration, and I love the details on the run. I'm looking forward to reading more about your runs.

Remember--There are no stupid questions!

I had to Google Garmin when I first got on this board to figure out what it was. Garmin is a company the manufactures GPS equipment. They have designed a product for runners/cyclists called the Forerunner. There are a few different models with the 205 and 305 (has a heart rate monitor) being the newest. The forerunner has a built in GPS so once it syncs with the satellites it automatically displays your speed and distance. It also tracks how many calories burned. Has a lot of features--I have it on the auto lap, where it automatically logs a lap for every mile run/walked. You can also train against a virtual partner. And b/c of hte GPS it will plot your route on a map once it's synced with your computer!

I looked at the Nike+, but since I don't have the Nano--it was a no go for me. Hoped that helped!:)

OK I am lame...but I did not want to take time to stop to take pics this year on the course...so here are the 2 from afterwards.

I got a Garmin 205 for Christmas, too. But, I can't figure out how to see my splits. Can you offer any tips?:confused3

I went under training--push the mode button until you find the menu with training on it--go under training options and you can set an auto lap--you can set it for whatever distance you choose--then when you hit that distance (for me 1 mile increments) the garmin beeps and shows the time for that "lap". Then when you look under the history when it says on the screen "view laps?" press enter and you can scroll through the laps from that run/walk. Hope that helped!:goodvibes

Christa--aren't you the little cutie???:) Looks like everyone was having fun on the Boardwalk!

Laurie,
I bought the cheap Garmin. It is the Forerunner 101. No heart rate monitor but it does calculate my lap times, speed, and overall distance. It also has the buddy runner and tracks your course but I don't use those features. Got it online for under $60 delivered.

I figure that if I like it, eventually I can get the version with the heart rate monitor. The drawback to the 101 is that it takes AAA batteries (or AA) and it is a little big, but works for me. The others are rechargeable.

enjoy,
Duane

Is anyone else really tired? I have never been tired like this after a marathon...but I also have never ran that far in heat like that.
YES!!!! I thought it was just that it was a really draining weekend with getting up early, running 26.2 miles, etc. I had to go to a seminar at 3pm on Wednesday, and I could barely keep my eyes open. I've been absolutely exhausted, and going to bed around 9pm and sleeping straight through until my alarm rings at 6am. I wonder if running in the heat had something to do with that.

Did my yoga class on Friday. Today, I did my first run since the marathon. I felt OK, but I forced myself to take it really easy. On the treadmill I did 5 min walk, 20 min jog, 5 min walk for 2.5 miles in 30 min.

ME TOOO!!!! This morning I did a 3 mile r/w on the indoor track. Yowzers. I was having problems breathing and my body ached. When the 3 miles were over I was so happy!!! I also have been so tired and just want to sleep. Monday I leave for 4 days in Reno for work. I can't wait until January is over. After Reno, I fly to Houston for 4 days.

Christa EQ - I am so sad I didn't get to meet you. I wasn't at the Monday Bakery meet and now wish I could have made it. You look great in your photos and I love the shirt you are wearing. Congrats on your PR!!!!
