Wk of Jan 28--WISH Walking/Running Club

Judy - wow! that is alot to deal with!

Mike - :lmao: :lmao: :lmao: :rotfl2:

Stephanie - good decision to rest! My theory is that anything over 15 just hurts! I think when you hit the taper, it should help give you time to heal.

Sunny - I like the inner kenyan/penguin debate:rotfl2: :rotfl2: :rotfl2:

Vicki - I too have a sad doughnut story! I thought phil's recent stomach trouble was related to the doughnuts and i threw the whole box out:headache: I really was sad about that b/c i was planning to eat them!!!

Dave - I'm doing a 50k trail run on Feb 17th (i think). It has a 9 hr cutoff which i hope to make!! It also has 2 water crossing and no drop bags (water and some aid every 5 miles) I think i'm actually going to see if my mom will meet me on the other side of the water crossing w/ a pair of shoes.

Too cold here again to do anything. Phil and i spent about 45mins orienteering in an area we had not visited b/4. It was pretty fun but i want to have a fire in the fireplace tonight!

I just want everyone to know that Judy has not been at my house. (And she may not get an invite, as I'm afraid of what she'd say. :rolleyes1 ) :p Just kidding Judy. I'd clean my house for you!

Oh Carrie, not to worry. I'm sure it is not as bad as hers. ;)

Say, I just found Kevin Yee's Half video on DisneyRunning. OMG! :yay: I was sitting at my desk for six and a half minutes staring at my screen with tears of joy! :woohoo: Thank you Kevin for taking it! Thank you Robert for posting it! OMG it was so exciting to watch! (I saw quite a few lime shirts in it too.)

Hi All!!!

I hope that everybody is injured or not feeling well recover quickly!!!

I am trying to recover from having to put one of my beloved dogs to sleep yesterday! :sad1: I am still in shock over her death, but at least she died in my dd20 and my arms. She will always be loved!!!

Went to Nashville, TN today and did a 6 mile mall walk. It was too cold to walk outside and we needed different scenery than our little mall here.

Congratulations to everybody who ran, ran/walked, walked/ran, walked or did any kind of workout today!! You guys are totally awesome!!!

Welcome to all the new WISHer's!!!

Erica:)

Erica - :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: I am so sorry about your furbaby. That is so hard. I'm sure she is having a great time with all the other dogs rompnig around at the Rainbow Bridge. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug:

I just want everyone to know that Judy has not been at my house. (And she may not get an invite, as I'm afraid of what she'd say. :rolleyes1 ) :p Just kidding Judy. I'd clean my house for you!
Note to self - Judy is not allowed at my house either! :rotfl:

Seriously Judy - tons of  coming your way!

Dave - I am a medical marvel at times! ;) Turns out I never should have gotten pregnant in the first place. And if I did, I should have lost him, or had a stillborn. Thank God I knew nothing of this (and neither did my doctors) until my emergency c-section! I had 3 doctors digging around inside there checking it all out! Oh, the crazy TMI stories I could tell... Just wait until we meet up at another race sometime - I'll have to show you my deformed thumbs. :rotfl2:

Terri - I keep hoping your doctor is wrong. Hang in there! :grouphug:

Sunny
- awesome jo on the TM!

Erica - :grouphug:

Christa - do the bike ride! You are the wonder woman around these parts - YOU CAN DO IT!!!

Paul - great job - keep it up!

Tinks - I love my garmin. I think we all *need* one! It is big, but I don't mind it. I like being able to see the readout easily. I doubt I'd like the new smaller ones.

I am heading to the Y now in my new tech shirt I just got at Wal-Mart and my new pants that came via the box-man from roadrunnersports (along with my discontinued & discounted asics - yay!). Who knew exercise gear would ever make me so happy? ;) I am hoping not exercising for a week since I was sick didn't set me too far back.

Erica: poor you, the list lived through me and my cat shaped fur baby with the same issue last year and I still forget she's not there sometimes.

Foot: no progress, but do have new physio who specialises in this injury so hooraaay for that.

Vic: blast I knew there was something I had to do when I was there instead of just eat veggie wraps by the seafront. Admittedly it was about 8 years ago and I couldn't run four feet at that point let alone 42km, but there was a nagging sensation of loss.

Helen

Hey there WISHers!!! Went out for a run today and did a 5k run. I wanted to see how well I could do to kind of get a feel for where I am starting, since I am starting to follow the Hal Higdon half marathon plan next week. Well, anyhow, I felt GREAT!!! Finished the 5k in 28:40 with a 9:03 pace!! I ran my fastest mile so far, which was an 8:51!! I am really excited!!!

Judy--sorry to hear you had a tough weekend. Hang in there!! WTG on getting back into your training!!

Erica--sorry to hear about your beloved dog... we are all thinking about you!

To everyone else---keep up the good work on your training!!

I am thinking about getting ready to sign up for a 100 mile bike ride to the beach...someone talk me out of this!

Christa - You should do it!!!!! Is it a race or ride? If you sign up, sign up w/ a group and you can draft. That really helps!! The only problem is that you won't really be able to contribute (pulling the line) very much b/c you are too skinny for others to draft off you!:cool1: (too skinny to break wind:rotfl: :rotfl: Sorry, I couln't resist!)

Erica -- I am so sorry for your loss, from one furbaby mommy to another, sending a

:welcome: Abra! Glad you made it to the action! Looks like there's several of us training at R4/W1 intervals.

:welcome: Carole! How many days per week are you currently walking? Rule of thumb is to increase your distance no more than 10% per week. Three miles 3x weekly with a 6 mile long walk sounds like a great training-to-train goal, but you may need to work up to that slowly.

Stacey...it's the High Performance Heart by Dr. Phillip Maffetone.

Erica...

Judy...yikes...not a great weekend. Hope things improve for your horse...we were all sad to see Barbaro's outcome :sad1:

Laurie...great pace!

Hey Wishers,

Kim, Mel, Krista, Kristi1357, Jim, Dave, MelR, Carrie, Cam, Vic, Steve, And to all others (if I missed you I am sorry) – Thanks for such a warm welcome!

Dave – I know how you feel about the guy next to you. Before I got
started running on TM I would always hate when people got next to
me and would run and run and run without breaking a sweat. Kind of
discouraging, but at the same time pushes you try harder

Jen – Same here with the co-worker. I am officially nuts to them for
wanting to go to Disney just to run. Family however is very supportive
and have promised to be there to cheer me on

Cam – Glad to see that I don’t have a freak toe, that it just something
that happens when you work hard.. Sorta like a battle scar!

Well about to go to my room and hit the TM. A lot of friends ask how I can go in a room night after night and run on a TM for 4+ miles without getting board. My secret for working out at home: Put the TM in front of the T.V. One of my guilty pleasure is Wrestling (and not Greco Roman Wrestling) good ole WWE. DW thinks I’m nuts but I tell her the same thing about her soap operas!

Laurie - awesome pace! :thumbsup2

Chernabog#1fan - I am like you - if I had a TM at home with a TV in front of it, I could stay on it forever! We have a hand-me-down TM in the basement and I did use it last winter to start exercising. But it's not the best quality and it kind of rocks and makes alot of noise when I just walk on it. So, off to the Y I go!

Cam
- I was thinking of you alot tonight during my wog. I have some new GGDs songs for ya if you are interested in some new tunes to keep you going - not the hits everyone knows. I will elaborate on the music thread tomorrow. Also, are you doing the full again next year? I can't remember if you mentioned that or not.

Sunny - I was thinking of you too. And wishing we lived closer so we could workout on occasion together. I think I could learn alot from you! I need some serious xt action!

Christa - I thought of you too! "Pour Some Sugar On Me" came on my mp3! :rotfl:

I did 3.5 miles - w3/r1 for the first 2, then all walking (didn't want to push the asthma tonight):
11:54
11:52
13:42
6:16 (ok, I lied. I sprinted the last 1/2 lap)
43:44

I am trying to recover from having to put one of my beloved dogs to sleep yesterday! :sad1: I am still in shock over her death, but at least she died in my dd20 and my arms. She will always be loved!!!

Erica:)

So sorry to hear this. PD coming your way!

I think my son is trying to kill me. We just returned from a 90 minute horse lesson on cantering. After my 20 mile run on Sunday my legs really are sore.

We are doing a Montana ranch trip this summer so it's time to fine tune our riding skills. I didn't think it would involve picking myself off my back!

Somehow I have to figure out how the sore muscles fit into my taper schedule for my upcoming marathon. I might be running a little bow legged! :lmao:

BTW, does anyone want to explain what a Garmin is exactly and why I need one?? I peeked at them online, but it looks like a GPS??? It also looked somewhat large to be strapping to my wrist for a LR!

Others have probably already answered so this is probably a repeat. I love my Garmin. I started with a 205 and moved to a 305 for the heart rate monitor. I love knowing my pace, my distance, and where I am at.

I have used the "return to start" feature many times when running in unknown cities. No need to worry about where I am at, just "return to start".

My son takes it to school for days they do running in JROTC. It helps him pace.

It's also fun to see the maps on the computer. We have a summer vacation in Alaska. I have the maps of where I ran. Just fun.

I ordered my through REI because of their exchange policy. They made it really easy to return several that had service problems.

I love Garmin, in case you had not noticed.

So runner tip #1023: do not sit bare butt on a large pile of small ice cubes

:lmao: :lmao:
I get in the cool water then have dh pour the ice cubes in & now I know why my coach told me to do it that way. Funny story - thank for the laugh.

CaroleD -One of my teammates ran the marathon but she is an extremely slow runner and she said LOTS of walkers wizzed past her the entire 26.2 miles. However, she crossed the mats at 6:59:46 & She was thrilled.
Your training plan looks good for now. DO you do any weights with the walking?

Erica - So sorry about your beloved pet. :grouphug:

Kevin - I am sorry to hear about your friend. Your right, at times like this we tend to put everything in a different perspective.

Take care everyone.

Carrie

Maybe your house isn't "untidy," perhaps it's just perfect for a Hemingway cat named Mittens.

Erica

Yes, it's the worst. We had to put down 2 much loved friends last year, the second was a project cat from a shelter who grew to love and be loved by our daughter. At least at the end he was held and cried over by a 21 year old girl who loved him with all her heart.

With open positions in our house we gave forever homes to 2 creatures from a shelter, an elegant young lady/diva, and an energetic very young male, also a Hemingway cat. After Martha watched him race all over the house, attack the older and much larger female, get the crap knocked out of him, then go back for more, Martha told me "you know, after watching Hudson I understand you a lot better." Sadly she was spot on.

The epidemic of toe nail loss puzzles me. Are your shoes long enough? Do you grease the toes on really long training sessions? Or maybe it's more a female vs. male thing.

The difference between male and female runners? Here's a hypothesis. Males can easily and quickly relieve themselves by any tree or bush before or during the race, females don't have that luxury (although at 5:50 a.m. on January 7 before the marathon start a female did in fact crouch down low in the ditch to the right of the right hand starting corral, being a gentleman I of course didn't look, but she received a big round of applause from the corral when done). Females have toe nails go black and fall off. Others?

Craig

And yes, I'm going to get that Ducati. One of my students this spring has one. Do you suppose he'd bring it by so his instructor could see it, sit on it, start it, listen to the engine, and then of course, turn the engine off and walk awaypirate: ?

The epidemic of toe nail loss puzzles me. Are your shoes long enough? Do you grease the toes on really long training sessions? Or maybe it's more a female vs. male thing.

I know in my case, it's because my big toe bends back way more than it should. This in turn puts all my weight bearing with each foot strike onto my second toe on each foot. The second toe is not made to to take on all that weight. So mine go purple (and only once fell off) due to a repetition type injury. That's what the Pod. said anyway. A middle toe has now jumped in on the purple action too.

At first I was horrified about being toenail-less only 2 weeks away from a vacation last summer in Ocean City. Now, I kinda like it. It's kind of a throw back to the tom boy days. I guess I feel more like I am really doing something out there since I have battle scars! I have issues, huh? ;)

I think you are onto something with the male vs female thing. Chad has never had one single solitary issue with his toes. Nails or otherwise! And he's done the Full since '02. And the Goofy twice. Hmmm....

Hi!

It sounds like we are off to a busy week. I have a question for those of you that have done a Disney race -- did you bring your kids? DH and I are trying to decide whether to bring ds9 in January. He would have to miss a few days of 4th Grade (highly frowned upon in his school), and we would have to make some arrangements and travel back and forth to Tampa a few times to have a niece watch him Friday night. DH wants to leave him at our house and have my dad come watch him. I'm torn, because I'm afraid he's going to be really upset we went to Disney w/out him, even though we're not going to the parks. This is also our first long race, so I don't know how we will be feeling.

We are going for a family vacation this summer, so he will have just been there a few months previously...and he does get a big family vacation every summer, so it's not like this would be a once in a lifetime opportunity for him.

I'm wondering what other people normally do?

Thanks!
Maria

Just throwing this up again, hoping someone will take pity on me and let me know what you normally do...

Thanks!
Maria
