Wk of Feb 5--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Wow! LisaSP!! You look fabulous!! (pardon the pun! ;) )
Congrats on the 1/2 marathon. You have inspired me!!

To see Lisa's pics I have to go right click, click properties and copy and paste that into my browser. Awesome pics. If you haven't seen them yet, go to the trouble of seeing them. She is an inspiration!!!!

I still can't see the pics!!! I tried to clip and paste and it doesnt work. can someone put them in a quote to make them show up?

Good evening from across the border: I'm in St. Catherine's, Ontario tonight because I gave a talk at Brock University this afternoon, and I'm on to the University of Toronto tomorrow before heading back home.

I walked 2.5 miles on the hotel treadmill at 14 mpm pace. You WISHers have really motivated me! I never would have worked out while away on a trip in the past, and tonight I was looking forward to getting on the treadmill. It felt great. I feel like my breathing is getting easier and my legs are getting stronger. On trips in the past I would really look forward to a big decadent dinner and room service. Now on my trip 2 weeks ago and now this one I've walked on the treadmill after a reasonable dinner. Whoo hooo, I hope this walking will progress to running, and I keep it up!

Great Job! :thumbsup2

You can do it! You've already made a positive step by exercising while on the road.

Thanks for the support Jodi! :thumbsup2

You can and will do it too! Once your DH sees your committment, I'm sure he will be one of your biggest supporters.

See you at the marathon! ;)

Thanks Everyone for the great support over the past couple of days! I really needed that :goodvibes

I'm so excited I just found a running club in my area - I was smart enough to pick up a business card from the place that I bought my new sneakers, checked out the website and they also organize the runs. Check it out ****ord Running Club - I think I might do this within the next month or so.

Although, it is a little scary at first meeting new people - I know that I will be ok ;)

Jodi

Hmmmm....not sure why I can't get the link to work

Hey everyone! I am not sure if this is the right place but here goes! (I'm sorry I haven't posted in a while -- started back to school, moved across the country, started a new job -- things have been stressful! LOL)

I am going to sign up for the 1/2 marathon. I'm kind of scared but way more excited! I have about 65 lbs to lose until I get to my goal (already lost 30), but I have been working out consistently since April (at least 4 days a week, most of the time 5-6) and I have a lot of endurance and am pretty strong. I typically work out 1.5 - 2 hours a day, both cardio and weights. I am not a big fan of running, but I have before and done some 5ks and 10ks.

So, do you think I can do this? Considering I have 13 months to train and lose the excess weight (which I plan to much earlier than that!), do you think it's reasonable for me to do this? I really want to accomplish this goal. Let me know your thoughts. Also, if I had a partner to support me in this online, I'd be grateful! :)

Thanks everyone!
Christiana :)

Welcome Christiana! It sounds like you already have a great fitness base. As the half gets closer, you'll feel like you have about 20 on-line partners as everyone is pretty much doing the same distance and #'s of runs per week. You definitely found the right place.

Hey Lynn, where are you? I got a thud buster suspension saddle post to add to my hard-tail (cannondale f700) I'm totally excited about it. Do you think I'm a weenie? Does this make me soft? It is still technically only front suspension and plus phil got a new bike so i thought it would help control my bike envy!!

Welcome Christina- we always love to get new members! This is a great group & I know you will get inspiration & motivation from it like I did. And to answer your questions, YES YOU CAN DO IT! You are starting from a much better base than I did and have much more time to train. Right now is the time for "training to train" building your base & losing whatever weight you want to. It is a great race atmosphere. Very supportive, fun, welcoming. Everyone, including the top athletes, always make everyone feel like they deserve to be there (not all races are like that) If you could see the wide variety of people there, you would be amazed. You will not be the skinniest or the biggest. Trust me. And the journey you take with this great bunch of people will change your life for the better. I know it has mine :grouphug:

DL is 50% full. Sign up today if you haven't.

Cam-that is such a great picture! You guys look like such a happy family. I love that. Family is so important and to see a family having fun together makes me feel all warm & fuzzy (especially when 1 is a teenager & is still willing to be seen in public with mom, dad & little brother) :thumbsup2 That's what I think this country needs, more families that spend quality time & have fun together.

Minnie-Say it isnt so!!! They have changed the Kayano's. Do you know how long it took me to find a shoe I liked. I bought some a couple of months before the race, so I haven't been back to my running store to see. What has changed about them. I'm not sure if they carry the Kayanos but try zappos.com they have alot of shoes & I know several people that have ordered from them & been pleased.

MelR-will all the adventure races you do I dare someone to call you a weenie :teeth:

Jodi-that is so great you found a running club to join. That will help yo stay motivated & train with people that understand your goals.

Dave-WTG! See, you are becoming a real athlete now. Only truly dedicated people train while they are out of town :thumbsup2 Great job on the pace too!

Terri-My mom doesnt remember alot of the stuff we walked by either. She doesnt even remember hearing them calling out her name at the finish line.

Good Morning Everyone: :surfweb:

Just some thoughts as I start my day

Originally posted by wtpclc To all of the new memebers - Thanks for keeping us accoutnable and helping to inspire us! It really helps to hear your stories and share ours. I'll rty to get up to speed with all of you individually soon, but I do love the new life you're brining here.
Carrie - this was so nice of you to say. You know it never occured to me that us new folks could help keep some of you that have already been through the experience going. Thanks for saying that. I was a little worried that I was being too much of a "Chatty Cathy", and not talking about training enough. I hope your foot problems stop soon. Good luck with the Mackinac Bridge run - I never even liked driving over that bridge because it was so high.

Cam - great pictures of your family with the Polar Plunge. It looks like you are all having a great time and really enjoying yourselves. Good for you.

Maggie - Sounds like you had a great workout on the treadmill. :thumbsup2

MickeySP - Your pictures are great. Thanks for posting and sharing, and congratulations!

Jodi - that's great you found a running group. I'm with you, and have always felt a little intimidated meeting new people - especially a group of athletes. You'll be OK. Post here and let us know how it goes. There's a running store here (well at home in Rochester) that sponsors a "Learn to Run" program. It's a 12 week program that gradually builds up your running until you can run for 30 minutes straight. Then you do a 5k at the end of the program. I was doing the program last summer when I got my shin splints and had to stop. I was intimdated too when I started the program to try something new and meet new people, but I found it was a very supportive group. I'm thinking I might try it again when they start up in mid-March.

Christiana - Welcome!!! :welcome: Sounds like you are in great shape to do the 1/2 marathon next January. You have lots of time to train. I just joined this group a couple of weeks ago, and I'm hoping to run the marathon (never done that before). I'm starting from just walking, and have a ways to go. Everyone here has been very, very supportive. If I can do it, YOU CAN DO IT!

TiffJ

Thanks for saying that. OK, I'm an athlete in training. I've got a long way to go, but slow and steady wins the race, right? Small steps, small steps.

OK, have a great day everyone, good luck with all your training, good luck with any injuries - here's hoping for speedy recoveries, and be safe out there.

:yoda:

Carrie - I have to second Dave's sentiments. All this time I have felt that I was just hanging on to the coat tails of the WISH veterans. Thanks for saying that we are contributing as well.

Christiana - Welcome!

Maggie

I have been consistent now since the first week of January! Believe it or not this wasn't a NY resolution. I just stumbled upon the WISHers while researching Disney for May and I am so glad I did!

Anyway, as Dave mentioned before, finding a balance between workouts, kids, spouse and job can be difficult. It is stressing me out a bit. While my husband is supportive, I always feel rushed through my workout because he wonders why I am gone so long etc..

So, my new plan is to go to the gym 3 days for my runs. I will do this whenever it fits into the day. My kids are up b/w 5 & 5:30 so the early morning runs are out. But during naptime or before dinner if my husband is working from home should work. This am I bought a yoga DVD to use at home on my cross training days. I also have hand weights to use. This way I am only gone 3 days a week at the gym.

And the best idea yet --- is I am trying to convince him to do the Chicago distance classic with me so that we can train together :cool1: He seems interested!

Enough rambling for this morning. Hope everyone has a great day. Thanks for all your support.

Maggie :surfweb:

Terri - They are all the pics that were linked to my bib. I *think* you could probably add from the lost and found too, but you'd have to work with them to do that. Theyalso threw in a generic start pic. Unfortunately, it wasn't my start (must be the red one).

Welcoem CHristiana!

OK, put on my runing shoes when I got home last night and am wearing them to work today. My foot feels a little better today. Stillt rying to find a doc to look at it, though.

OK - 2.5 miles this morning on the hotel treadmill at ~ 15 mpm pace. A little slower this morning, but it is probably because I need COFFEE and breakfast. Off to get both of those.

Maggie - sounds like you have a great plan. I know exactly how you feel trying to rush through a workout in order to not leave the spouse with the kids too long. However, everytime I get in saying "is everything OK" the response is always, "oh, yeah, no problems - don't worry about it." So that's good. My DW is being very supportive about my getting more exercise. Have fun training together for the Chicago distance classic.

I, like you, did not really make any New Years resolution to exercise, I just knew I needed to get into better shape. Plus, I always wanted to run a marathon. I literally stumbled onto this thread too - thanks to Lily pointing me in the direction, and it has been the best thing ever!

Have a great day all.

AMEN to that!!!! I rarely workout w/o coffee and oatmeal. I even make sure to eat and drink that very same thing b/4 a race. I think everyone will be happy to know that i did replace my coffee maker and I'm not haveing to use the perkolator on the stove (it took way too long) Finding the coffee maker was almost as hard as Heather getting her purple shoes

Heather - Where are you???? Out riding????

Are you speaking a foreign language :lmao: I didn't understand one word of that!

I did upperbody weights and elliptical last night. I was so tired I tried to take a nap on the elliptical trainer while pedalling. I think I need to back off a bit, but I'm being OCD about my GetFit challenge and trying to rack up mega minutes. Yesterday was 140 minutes of exercise including the speed work at lunch time. I'm so tired today :sad2:

I still can't see the picts either :confused3 No fair! I want to see the picts!!!!!

Many times the disboard will not allow links to other sites. If you type out the site though like "disboards.com" without the link or the the "www." it will normall work. Hope this helps.

MickeySP - AWESOME PICTURES!!!! Thank you so much for sharing those!!

Sunny - Speaking of workouts and your challenge, what did you lift last week? More african elephants or something more substantial???? I really want the update! Oh, yeah, here is the translation.... Hey Lynn, were are you, I got a really cushie seat on my mountain bike b/c it only has shocks in the front :teeth: (I'll bet you were wondering what the hard-tail was :lmao: )

Hi, everyone! Sorry I have been MIA after that drive-by posting Sunday night. As everyone is probably sick and tired of hearing my lament by now, I will just say work is crazy and I am trying to sneak in here to catch up before the thread gets to 10 pages! :teeth:

Melissa -- I loved reading your race report, though I am sorry about the whole missing strawberry cake thing. That might have been enough for me to throw in the towel and hitch a ride back on DH's bike! :rotfl2: Personally, I thought your sherpa reference was very clever! Glad you got honey buns at the end, though was sacrificing your favorite fleece really worth the experience? Oh, and thanks for the hot chocolate! Yummmmm.

Helen and everyone who said really nice things about our family picture -- thanks for all of the compliments, and especially being called "glamorous" -- that is one of those bathing suits that hides all the bad stuff with the skirt! Of course the wind on Sunday made managing the skirt quite interesting. That is the first non-black bathing suit I have bought since my 13th birthday. Oh, and you can probably tell why I would like to keep my DD locked up. Even in an unflattering picture she is a knockout.

Judy -- The Susan Lucci comment was incredibly flattering! Thank you!

BTW, the picture of all of us together really is a family treasure. :cloud9: It is the first year we all got to plunge together. My cardiologist had forbidden it for several years and before that it was just Howard and me. Now, I figured that after winning that award in the fall, we definitely HAD to do it together! ;) With Jenn (hopefully) at college next year, not sure the four of us will be together for it.

MickeySP -- your pictures are so impressive and inspiring. You are gorgeous! Congratulations! You must feel soo wonderful and proud! :cheer2:

Maggie -- so glad your training is going so well. Great L R/W Saturday!

Sara -- glad someone else is thinking about getting serious about training for the Minnie soon. I have to get the 2007 full out of my head (it's a bit overwhelming) and focus instead on the next event, the Minnie.

Carrie -- I am going to try to get through the rest of the posts, but I am really worried about your foot. I shouldn't still be hurting more than 4 weeks after the FULL. Hopefully by now you have found some medical attention. (I'll keep reading!)

Judy -- the TM thoughts had me :rotfl2: ! Can you believe how far you've come in such a short time? Awesome, awesome change of life and change of attitude! :woohoo: Just don't push it too much with your knees. I am glad to hear you are icing. At marathon weekend they gave out sample packets of something called Biofreeze (I think?). I just came across the packet and am wondering if something like that might be helpful. You might want to look for it and read the packaging next time you are near a drugstore. BTW, I thought I was courageous to head off to WDW last summer for a weekend with a girlfriend! Hawaii sounds amazing!!! You are very brave, but it must be nice to have those memories.

Sunny -- Okay, I know we all worry about our challenges, but may I just say that I am completely confident you will be fine for your half?! I think you are becoming a bit de-sensitized to the enormity of what you do, training-wise. That is one of the interesting things about being part of a community like this. Sometimes we don't realize that not many people go out and do 5 miles of speedwork! :yay:

For those that havent made hotel reservations for DL -get on the phone. I called to see about possibly switching to DLH. Well both DLH and PP are SOLD OUT for that weekend. ALL ROOMS! GC had rooms but their AAA rate was $320.
Great reminder, Tiff! We are booked at the Candy Cane Inn (thanks for info, Helen!) and we are looking forward to a WISH meet by the pool. Hoping everyone has been able to find a place to stay! BTW, thank you so much for the nice compliments and observations re:teenagers and family activities. Our kids have been involved in Special Olympics since they were very young and both are so warm and kind-hearted. We are so blessed.

Be careful of the tendonitis, Tiff! I was having the same issues last summer and my doctor (sports med) recommended aleve and lots of stretching, even when I am sitting at my desk. I also got one of those foot roller thingies that Lisa recommended and that helped so much. Take care, because if it gets really inflamed it can really impact your training.

Dave -- congratulations on your awesome new healthy attitude! You should be soooo proud of yourself. And not just that you exercised, but also because that pace is AWESOME!

Christiana -- welcome aboard! Congrats on losing 30 pounds already. Keep up the great work! Marathon weekend is 11 months away, so you have plenty of time to continue with your conditioning and training. So glad to have you here! :wave2:

Jodi -- It is so great that you've found a running club. It will be so nice because there are probably people of all levels and you might find a really compatible running partner! :thumbsup2

For the newbies -- I agree wholeheartedly with Carrie in saying that we are so grateful to everyone who posts here and brings enthusiasm and energy to this thread. It is so much fun to share this experience and we learn so much every day from the questions and answers that get posted.

Dave -- another thing I wanted to mention. John Bingham says that if you want to be a runner, all you have to do is run. If you want to have a runner's body, all you have to do is run with the body you have. When you are running with the body you have, you are a runner and you have a runner's body. I know I am over-simplifying his words, but to me, having trained for and completed a half-marathon, I still have a hard time acknowledging that I am a half-marathoner! Having undertaken to train yourself, you are an athlete. There is no half-way. You are doing it. Enjoy the nomer you have earned for yourself! :cheer2:

WOW! I can't believe how long this got. Hope I didnt' break and DISboard rules or anything.

One quick last thing -- I did 50 minutes of strength training last night and then 2 miles on the TM in 28:06! I THINK 14:03 is a new PR. Can't wait to add some jogging to that and see where I can get to. :goodvibes
