Wk of Aug 13--2007 WISH Walking/Running Club

Sunny- Oh Sunny, you are making me infuriated with your doctors. :furious: I am growing to hate them, and I don't use that word often. I'm not even going to address the weight loss comments - from these boards I think I know you better than those doctors and that can not be your major problem at this point. I hope you get the help and attention you need soon. I admire you for not giving up on your dream. If you want to start training, you might think about the deep water running that I was doing. It will have no impact whatsoever on your spine, and will use all the same muscles as running. Might be worthwhile giving a try. Hang in there Sunny - we're here with you!!!! I'm sorry you had such a horrendous day. I agree with what Paul and some others have said - you are such an inspiration to all of us here. We won't give up on you at all, and I can't wait to meet you in January!

Christa- Good luck with your training for the Triple Lakes Trail Marathon. I also totally agree with your comment to Susie; I definitely post here because I don't have it together...

Bill- Thanks for the advice about icing the shins. Point well taken, I probably should continue to ice some too. Good luck with your long walk today.

Mel- Great job with your TM wog! Glad the R7/W3 interval is going well and your brain isn't protesting too much. I missed out on the bracelet order, but I like the picture of the bracelets. I like that the letters are kind of subtle - it's like a secret message just to me. I might order a couple of those. So you just went and did labs on yourself? Wow, it's a good thing I don't have this ability. I would be way too nerdy/geeky and be doing labs on myself every week. Don't get too down on yourself about the cholesterol. Yes, so you are borderline, who knows how it would be if you were not running? You are keeping it under control the best you can.

Hi Jodi :wave2: No, I haven't broken the news to DW yet. I'm going to wait a little while longer (maybe October) to get into my marathon training. So she can see my legs are holding up and I'm really serious about doing this. I love your pictures. The Mickey balloons are great! I think I need to do some serious thought and planning about this! Your plan for races this Fall sounds great! They sound like a lot of fun!

CJ- You're right - keep moving forward. You're doing it!

Holly- Wow, you are fast! Great job on your 3 miles.

Paul- Glad Southwest worked out for you!

Howard- 10 miles! Whoa, WTG! Have fun with your LR on Saturday!

Howard and Cam- Good luck with DD's college dropoff! She will be great, and you have done such a great job raising her.

OK, time to get ready for work. Here's some extra PD for Sunny :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: :tinker: (I figured you need the full Tinkerbell treatment).

Sunny - lots of  and even more pixiedust: ! I don't really have anything more to add that the others here have already said. Just keep your chin up. You have come so far from everything I've read about you. I really don't think this is going to keep you down! Hang in there and don't push yourself too hard, ok? :grouphug:

Jodi - very cool pics!

I have been MIA since I don't allow myself to post if I haven't been exercising. So... :rolleyes1 I don't know what is wrong with me this week. Except for being even more sleep-deprieved than usual. And I better get my behind out there a.s.a.p. - I gained 4.4 lbs. in one week! I have one more week on WW to be Lifetime and I might be screwing that up. I don't get Lifetime if I gain .6 or .8 more next week. :sad2:

I went to the podiatrist about my toe thing. Long story short, he wants me to get orthopedics. Yeah, I knew going in that he would say that. But after him examining my feet & hearing what he had to say, I think I do need them. And I don't have $500 laying around to get them. Basically, my metatarsil (sp?) bone, the one that runs from the big toe back, is hyper-mobil. That bone moves way too much. So, instead of supporting my body and taking the 'hit' when I walk or run, it moves and the weight is transferred to the second toe & that bone. Also, my big toe bends back about 90 degrees - it should only go about 60-65 degrees.

Oh, and since this bone moves so much when it's not supposed to - he says I will develop bone spurs above that joint (on top of foot) someday down the road. And probably arthritis too. :sad2:

The good part was that he thought my running shoes were fitted perfectly and a very good choice of shoe for me (asics).

He didn't pressure me to buy the orthotics. In fact, he said he didn't care if I got them somewhere else, just save up and get them. That, and the fact that he was so surprised just how flexible my foot was, convinced me he is not just trying to sell custom orthotics. In the meantime, he wants me to get over the counter inserts for my flat feet.

I will get out for a wog today if it kills me! I may need a nap first though...

Good Morning Everyone!

Did not train yet today because no sitter for the kids. However I plan on going to the gym soon as my 2.5 year old wakes up.

Solotraveler Please pm your training plan for the Goofy!! I appreciate your generosity. (and willingness to share with me)

Have a great day and happy training to everyone!

I haven't read anyone else's posts yet, but I just needed to write this..

Sunny-- I'm SO sorry you are having to deal with all of this. :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: :grouphug: I wish there was something we could do to make things better or easier for you right now.

I truly admire your determination to push through and do this, but please take it easy and take care of yourself. We are all thinking about you.

jodi: that's so cool! my mom and i are trying to see if we can get away with it for my dad. he always books the vacations so we everytime we have a question for him we have to be careful how to phrase it and all that stuff. yesterday something came to the house for me from disney about what i had booked i guess. my mom was glad she was home before my dad to get it and hide it. i just booked my flight home from that trip this morning. my flight down went up, or rather the cheap price must be gone. so i don't know if i should just pay more or fly down on a different airline for the same as the cheap price was. but then i have to leave work earlier than i was planning on to get down there by 7pm for the mnsshp

dave: haha i'm not that fast and it was only 3 miles, but thanks!. and there's no way i'd ever be able to hold that pace for the whole marathon (well at this point anyways)

did my 5 miles this morning. got it all done in about 45 min. i really need to get a new watch so i can actually time what i'm doing :rotfl2:
it was nice out this morning, perfect temp and everything! i wish it was always like that outside!!

Sunny - I just don't have the words to describe how terrible I feel for you right now :grouphug:

If it helps any at all my L4-L5 disk is bulging which is causing all my problems (not the sacrum as originally diagnosed with) and the shot did actually help. It is not a long time fix (mine wore off too quickly) but it does help. Here's hoping for major pain relief for you :wizard:

Cam & Howard - :wizard: for you both on sending your DD to college today! My DS turned into a teenager on Wednesday (reason I wasn't in chat) and I had my own little pity party for that

Hi Everyone -

Someone asked how I was feeling after my run with the "boys". Well, most of what I feel can't be posted in a public forum so we'll just say EVERYTHING HURTS!!! :rolleyes1

I guess I should have taken an ice bath after all. I just was so tired when I got home that I curled up on the couch and whimpered. So I am paying for my pride. I took yesterday off instead of doing my 3 mile run. I will run today, but I will run on a treadmill and keep it very slow. Hopefully that will help ease the achy feeling I have literally everywhere.

My neighbor asked me how a hard run could make my arms ache. Anyone have the answer to that? Heck, yesterday even my earlobes ached!

Pungodingly - Way to go! Just keep at it and pretty soon it will be so rewarding that you will hate your rest days. Don't laugh, believe me, I used to have to bribe myself before every run "If I run today- I can have a choclate eclair" now I have to bribe myself not to run when I need the rest "if I take today off - then I can go get a cream puff" :)

Have a great day everyone!

A quick post...

Sunny -- :grouphug: I hope the shot works. Sometimes surgery is just the only thing to end the pain and the quicker it is done, the faster you can feel better. Don't overdo it so that you mess up things for later on though.

I didn't quite get out for the walk today. When I woke up, I heard something dripping from the gutters but it didn't sound like rain. When I checked to see what it was like outside, I discovered it was extremely foggy. I couldn't see the house across the street. I decided that it wasn't a good idea to walk in the dark when people probably couldn't see me and I probably couldn't see them either. So I went back to bed for another hour and a half of sleep. I guess after DL I should make a better point about being regular about the back to back days.

Hopefully the weather will be better tomorrow for the long run.

Good morning all. What a lousy night I had. :crazy2: Nothing big, but every little thing that could go wrong...did. I didn't get to bed until late, then I couldn't get to sleep, then , naturally, I didn't get up this morning. So no training to report. And just when I was all sorts of excited about my new intervals. Grrrrr. :furious:

Susie - Hi! :wave2: Glad to see you here.

Pungodingy - YAY for you! :woohoo: There's a little something we say around here that you should know about. DLF>DNF>>DNS. This means "dead last finish beats did not finish which greatly trumps did not start". We sort of live by those words. They are even on our racing team shirts this year. By taking those first steps you are ALREADY AHEAD of those who did not even start. So you are well on your way to greater things. I say GOOD FOR YOU!!! :thumbsup2

Kevin - "Wordy McWord"???? How cute!! :teeth:

Judy-- Way to Go! You know, you are terribly impressive. I remember WAY back when you joined us before the 2006 race and your enthusiasm and dedication to training hasn't seemed to wain at all. It's just remarkable. Won't be long til you're lapping us all, huh?

Oh Kevin! You just brought tears to my eyes! And I'm not wearing water-proof mascara! OMG! OMG! I am SO taping that to the TM, the fridge, my monitor, my forehead..... Oh Kevin, thank you so much. :thanks:

Christa - Excellent. :thumbsup2 Keep us posted on your training. We will be rooting for you all the way!

Bill - Don't worry, I am the "Queen of Taking It Easy". I'm increasing things just a wee bit at a time. :goodvibes

Sunny - Oh Sunny! I'm not sure what to say, so I'll say this.....Charlie and I will be there at the Full, positively SCREAMING your name and cheering you on! I promise you that! I'm sure I don't have to tell you this, but take it easy. LSD all the way, girl. And stay here with us. Please.

Mel - I PM'ed you about the bracelets. Getting medievel with your diet, eh? Sounds like thats what I better do, if I'm going to lose ANY weight before the Half.

Jodi - Wow, you really put a lot of thought and work into that party! How very nice! :goodvibes You know, I'm not sure which Garmin I have. I'll look and let you know.

CJ - Ice that knee! :tiptoe:

Holly - This was DH's second time at Dutch Springs. This next weekend we are going to Newport so he can dive and I can...I can......find some running shoe stores! Yeah! Thats it, running shoe stores! :smooth:

Dave - Oh what fun with your DDs! How cute that must have been. princess: princess:

Thinking of Howard and Cam today! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Cruella de mom said:
Heck, yesterday even my earlobes ached!

Ha! :rotfl: Cecelia, that is too funny! Yes, my arms hurt too when I run hard.

I had an awesome long, slow run this morning. I was out the door at 4:40 a.m. and got in 14 miles. I wore my DH's heart rate monitor and tried to stay between 140-150 beats per minute. I had to run at about a 11:30 pace and walk up hills to keep my heart rate that low, but boy do I feel like a million bucks now! :Pinkbounc DH has been telling me to slow down my LR's, I am glad I am listen to him. I am sure I could have ran at least 4 more miles today, so I am excited about my 16 and 18 mile runs in the next few weeks.

Kristi, I had new orthotics made for me about 2 months ago, at first I wasn't too sure about them, but now I love them. They have corrected my hammer toe problem and my ITBand Syndrome. Good luck with decision.

Howard, great job on your 10 miles!

Dave, I can't wait to see the look on DW and the princesses princess: princess: faces :yay: when you tell them about your Disney marathon plans! Take notes because we want to hear all about it! :thumbsup2

Got up this morning to do my Short LR with DH and BIL. When I got up, I had such bad heart burn :confused3 That I could hardly keep anything down. I also had other gastro issues that we won't discuss here :rolleyes1 Anywho, I did eat toast and 1/2 a banana and took 4 tbsp of pepto (2 tbsp 1/2 an hour a part). Then I took 2 tums at the start of the run (can you see where this is going?)
I started and prayed for Sunny during the 1st 2 miles. I though, If I can make it to Bree's (@ the 5 mile mark after getting kind of lost on the new route) I will be OK. NOT! I thought...ditch the 10 miles and do the 7 miles with DH and BIL.
Sunny - I tried to keep praying for you, but my prayer started to be help me not to throwup on Park Road...a VERY busy street!
Got 2 more tums from Bree and the guys caught up to me. Ditched my H2O belt b/c it hurt to wear it. Ran to what I thought was 1 more mile (mile 6) then walked the rest of the way. Total 6.3 miles of running in lots of tummy pain and 1.4 miles of walking..DH wanted to come and pick me up but I was just a block away at this point. The total route was 7.7 miles. :confused3 I maped it out and thought it was 7...where did the .7 come from??
The break down of miles:
1: 7:30 - started 2 fast, but was trying to catch up after 1st bathroom break
2: 10:00 - caught up with guys and stayed w/ them
3: 8:30 - left guys and tried to get to Bree's and make up time
4: 9:00 - O the pain!
5: 9:30 - stopped @ Bree's and though I was feeling better
6: 10:00 - took a walk break so I would not throw up
7: turned off watch and walked the rest of the way! :sad2:

So sorry this was ALL ABOUT ME...I will try to catch up with everyone later! I still don't feel good so I am going to lay down.

judy: running shoes and diving... it's all the same thing! heck i do both of them. talk about expensive! to get good running shoes and good dive stuff. i'm going to be super broke! :lmao: actually i'm trying to get my parents to stop at the nike factory store and pick me up another pair of shoes and some more running socks. hopefully they will. if not i will have to wait until i can get to one! dutch springs was cool. i liked the helicopter. i wanted to go back in for an extra dive after we were finally certified but my sister started to pitch a fit to get home in time for a picnic. it would only have taken 30 more min to do another dive! :rotfl:

Thank you all so much. You've brought many more tears to my eyes, but they are the good kind :grouphug:

Thank you to those who mentioned relatives with positive results after surgery. I even said to the ns "I don't have to be fast, I just have to run"

Dave-- deep water running is an excellent idea. I will check with the Y and find out if I can do that there. I don't know exactly how they could acccommodate that, but it would be ideal to work the right muscles while avoiding impact. Once I'm back at work I have access to an air force base pool as well, I can check with them, too.

I think I will wait until after the shot to buy my plane tickets. How do you all find such cheap deals? Right now the best I know is Jet Blue ouf of Boston for $119 one way. My (our) race fees are already paid, my Disney Reward dollars will cover my POFQ stay so really all that I'd have to commit to money wise is plane tickets and food.

As for my new training plan. I did a baseline wog today. I just had to know where I stand after not moving for a month.

I did 4 miles in 47:43 avg pace 11:56
mile 1: 11:32
mile 2: 11:21
mile 3: 12:48
mile 4: 12:42

I know it was too fast, too much running, but I just had to be sure I still could do it.

So now I know I can make it 31% of the way through the half without getting swept! I'll go from there.

I didn't win the Y bike :sad2: So looks like I'll be investing in a new bike soon.

Sunny

Oh and Judy and Speedy you totally threw me off with the new avatars. I didn't even recognize you ;)

Hang in there Sunny!

By the way, I did 3 miles on the tread mill and never went over a 10 minute pace. I still hurt, especially my hips and quads. Oh well, luckily, Dh bought the 500 pill bottle of Ibuprofin!

Sunny- If you can fly from Manchester or Providence, you can fly on Southwest to Orlando. Right now both Providence and Manchester to Orlando is ~$260 round trip (I put in Jan 4 - 9th as the dates) for nonstop flights. As you may know, the nice thing about Southwest is that if you have to cancel a flight the money stays in your account as a credit for a future flight. You could make your reservation to Orlando, and cancel it the day you have to leave. You would get a $260 credit in your Southwest account that you could then use to book another flight. So you wouldn't lose your money if you had to cancel. Plus, if the flight goes down in price - say through a sale or DING fare, you could cancel your flight, rebook at the cheaper price and the difference would be left in your account to use for future travel.

Hello everyone!
I haven't been on this thread for months- busy with graduate school and getting ready for our upcoming cruise. (That is a chatty group of cruisers!)

I just wanted to say how nice it was to see our fellow Diser Pat & her husband at the Chicago Distance Classic. I was having chills and back pain around the time I saw them and was considering dropping out. They made all the difference and gave me the little perk I needed to get to the finish! :thumbsup2

Thanks Pat!

I later decided I was dehydrated and that was why I has having such pain and chills....which really surprised me because I was drinking at every water stop. Who knew? :confused3

Dave- Thanks again for the socks, I love them. Sorry I haven't posted sooner.

Keep up the great work everyone! :cheer2:

Celeste

Hey everybody. :wave2: Wow, has today been busy--no time to play. :teeth: With today being Friday, I didn't have much motivation to be here, much less do anything, so I told myself that I would work really hard in the morning, get everything finished so I could have the afternoon to relax. Well, it's 3:00 and I'm still chugging away. At least it makes the day go faster. :hourglass I have a 5K tonight, actually I'm kind of excited about it, Stephen and I are running it and my Mom, Dad, and younger sister are walking it. This is my dad's and sister's first 5K. Let me take that back, my dad ran track in high school, so this is his first 5K in probably 40 years. I don't think I told you guys, but my parents are doing the half marathon in Disney too. My mom walked it this past year, she is doing it again and my dad signed up too, so all 4 of us going are doing the marathon (Stephen--Goofy, Mom--Half, Dad--Half, and me--Full). Just so I can be held accountable for the 5K, I'll tell you my goal: my goal is not to have a PR, but to do negative splits. I'll let you know....

Sunny--  there really isn't anything more I can say, just know that you are in my prayers during this time. I truly, truly believe we are only given what we can handle, so I think all this means you are an incredibly strong person. Hang in there, don't be tempted to do more than your body can handle and remember how much we all love you and we are rooting for you.

Christa--Sorry about the tummy troubles! I hope you are feeling better now. Tell Bree we said :wave2:.

Holly--Your surprise plan for your dad sounds awesome! But I don't know how you can keep it to yourself, I am terrible with secrets, I just get so excited, I practically burst.

Pungodingy-- :cheer2: :cheer2: for getting out there and getting started. You may not believe it, but getting out there and starting is half the battle. Great job.

I love to chat more, I haven't even got to talk to everyone, but I want to get my work finished before 5:00. Hopefully I'll be back later tonight, but definitely tomorrow. Good luck to everyone racing this weekend. And to Melissa-- :tink: :tink: for your Half Ironman.

Krista - The family marathon sounds awesome!!! How cool! Good luck tonight!

Melr - :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

Hi All!

The CDC pics are posted at www.runphotos.com, my bib # is 105.

Included in the CDC goodie bag was info about upcoming events. Two that I thought sounded especially interesting, and worth adding to the WISH list are:

South Dakota - Mt Rushmore Marathon (marathon, marthon relay, half, and 5K) welcomes runners, walkers, and wheelers. Event extras include: pasta dinner, marathon brunch, Black Hills tour, cowboy dinner & show (yee-haw!!). The next event is Oct 7-8, obviously it is too late for this year, but DH and I have always wanted to see Mt Rushmore anyway, and it sounds like a blast. More info can be found at www.monumentalchallenge.com

Tennesse - Country Music Marathon in Nashville (half and full) - there is also a country music concert. Is this one of the "hilly" courses?? I vaguely remember someone saying that, not sure if I am remembering correctly though.....The next event is April 28, 2007. This one sounds like fun too - 50 bands performing live on 28 stages, with hundreds of highschool cheerleaders, along with thousands of spectators lining the course. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:

Oh yes, this FREE sport is a blast :cool1:

I did an 8 minute 1/2 mile today, a whole minute better than yesterday!!

And, my book came today (Marathoning for mortals)...I'm about halfway thru it, boy, there is a LOT I never even thought about!
