Can someone tell me what a good time to do a mile in is?

The key is to do the mile, whatever your pace. Like the Nike slogan, just do it. You benefit simply by putting the steps in. That being said, most of us are training for the WDW marathon or 1/2 marathon (or both), which requires a 16 minute mile pace. When I started training in April 2004 I was walking at a 20 minute pace. Since then I have completed two WDW 1/2 marathons and am training for the DL 1/2 and the WDW full.

Mel- Thanks for starting the thread every week. Good job on your 3 mile run. Thanks for asking about my legs. They're doing better. Still a little soreness in the right shin, but all and all it is definitely improving. Slow and steady, right?

Sunny- Good to hear from you again. Cute Pluto! I'm impressed with your skills.

Sugaswim :welcome: It sounds like you have a good training plan. I'm sure you can get lots of advice here. We have all levels.

Janet :welcome: Wow, we keep getting more and more team members! Great!!! A lot of team members here did the Minnie Marathon last year, and can give you lots of advice. Training in order to get back to WDW has kept me motivated this year!

I started training for the 2006 marathon around Jan 21, 2005. Previously I did a good job exercising the recline lever on my recliner. I started out doing Jeff Galloway's 5k training program. Right after that I did his 10k training program and when that finished I was ready to do his marathon training program. The "couch to 5k" is another popular starting point for people.

Whatever you do, just start getting the steps in so that you will have a base when you actually start training for the marathon. It isn't good to increase any distance more than 10% a week and if you feel that you can't go farther then don't. Listening to what and how your body feels is very important.

I keep track of the times just so I can know how I am doing. I have found that if I increase the pace too quickly, I am more prone to injuring my legs. I can also make sure that my pacing stays consistent and I am not starting out too quickly.

Bill
Bill - Your running plan sounds like a good one. Good way to stay relatively pain free. I'm on the same track you were last year. I started training for the 2007 WDW Marathon in January 2006. I started by getting away from my computer, off the couch, and started walking 2 miles at a time. I've kept myself going now for over 6 months. That's a big accomplishment for me.

Terri- Great wog!!! WTG! :thumbsup2

Kristi- Great job on your 7 miler!!! That's super!

Pat- Congratulations on your Penguin Medal!!! Too bad to hear about your blisters. I hope they heal up quickly. Your description of the course brought back a lot of memories of the year I spent in Chicago. What a beautiful city. Mmmm, I'm thinking of Giordano's now, mmmmmm.

Lynne- Good to hear from you. Wow, are you busy. I can't wait to hear how Ironman Wisconsin goes (and then I hope to hear how Kona goes).

Krista- Great job on your 5 miler. You're moving right along. I'm watching the Bengals/Redskins as I type this, and I am also rooting for the Redskins. Being a diehard Steeler fan, I hate the Bengals. Plus they seem like a bunch of thugs this year. OK, as a University of Michigan alum, what the heck is up with Todd Collins? He looks awful. He was one of the Michigan QBs when I was in grad school there.

CJ- That is a great run you got in!!! Sorry to hear about your bicep troubles. Here's some PD for you!!! :wizard: :wizard: :wizard:

OK, I need to go eat my dinner now. Cheers all...

Well our computer is totally shot. DH is going to have to reformat & reload everything on it. Luckily he backed up our pictures not too long ago, but alot of other stuff is gone. He has temp. hooked up an old work laptop for us to use. I hate typing on this thing.

Training is going good. I did my 8 miler today 14:51 pace including warm up. NOt bad considering I had less than 6 hrs of sleep. Felt pretty good too.

My best friend is having a costume party for her DH's 40th b day. Should I be Minnie Mouse or the Queen of Hearts. Because of course I'll be wearing something Disney :teeth:

I dont have time to catch up with everyone but I have missed you guys while my computer has been down.

Pat-congrats on the CDC I would love to do that race & get a penguin medal. I might do it next year since I know I wont be doing DL then. How were the temps? Was it too hot? The course sounds fabulous. Show us the medal when you get a chance. Hope your feet heal fast.

Checking back in...

Pat - Congrats on the CDC. Can you post a pic of the Penguin medal? Blisters stink! :sad2: At the Goofy this year, I got a huge blood blister on the side of my heel. It was a little painful and after I took my running shoes off, I couldn't put a full shoe on again for almost a week. It was clogs or flip flops only.

Judy
- :grouphug: for you and Mist. I hop it all works out for you.

CJ - Bummer about the biceps. Sending :wizard: your way.

Krista - WTG on the 5 miler :thumbsup2

Lynne - Good luck with your IM training. Where DO you find the time to do all that training? :worship:

Terri

We're baaaaaaaaaaaaaack. :rotfl:

We actually ended up cutting our trip short a day since our wetnwild tickets were good til 12/31/07, and we'd just done blizzard beach the day before, and epcot the day before that, and MK the day before that, and MGM the day before that... Did I mention the heat index was around 100 all week? Best yet my minor sore throat monday night at MGM became a flaming fever by Thursday. Still hacking up all kinds of stuff. But hey its Disney you can't let the flu or whatever it was get you down...

On monday morning I tried to run from Shades of Green around past the Polynesian, TTC, and Contemporary on the way around the lagoon counter clockwise. Well as it turns out you get to the MK and basically can't go any further, or at least I couldn't find a path that didn't involve crossing a rope or climbing a fence. So back around the way I came I went, was shooting for a long run of 6 miles and I think that was about 5.5. DW chose to run towards Grand Floridian (where we honeymooned) and circled around it and the Polynesian for about 3 miles (she slept in an extra half hour). Ended up not running again until Thursday evening, when I basically just inflamed my fever by running for 30 min or so, about 3 miles. I'm hoping that the loooong days in the parks count for something.

Yesterday we found a dozen Geocaches in Gainesville with her sisters, jogging betwen some of them, so calling that a crosstraining day. Gonna try for a LR of 6 or 7 today, still building to a 10 miler the week before Dland.

But hey we're back safe and sound!

Good morning, everyone. :sunny: This is my last free week--next Monday starts marathon training. :scared1: :scared1:

Dave--What was up with Todd Collins? I was only half watching the game when he came in, I was sure he was a rookie, he sure looked like one. A safety! Can you believe that? Grrr! I'm jealous you got to run on the Mall, we went to DC in June, I was so jealous of all the runners. We were staying in VA and didn't feel like riding the Metro in our running clothes. :)

Pat--Awesome job on the CDC!! Please post pictures! Sorry about your foot, that stinks. Hope it's feeling better today.

Sugaswim and Janet-- :welcome:

Tiff--Sorry about your computer, I can sympathize, our laptop is shot too. For some reason it won't turn on (no, it's not the battery :teeth: ), we're taking to get it fixed this week, hopefully nothing will be lost. I have LOTS of pictures on there, and most of them are not backed up. :guilty: Great job on your 8 miler, Disneyland is coming right up!

CJ-- :wizard: for your bicep! That does not sound like fun.

Bill--How is your calf doing? Awesome job on your 10 miler, I can't believe you decided to double your run.

I better get started on my day, I need a vacation--only 47 days!

Hi Everyone-

I did something new for me yesterday - track work. Dh took the kids and was playing catch with them getting them ready for baseball and softball seasons and I ran around the track. It was supposed to be an easy day after my LR on Saturday.

I REALLY liked this work out. For those of you with pacing issues - this was a huge help to me. The track was small so 5 laps equals a mile. I measured every lap and by the second mile I was starting to notice the slight differences in my pace. By mile three I was keeping myself entertained by guessing what my lap time would be.

I consider myself a slow runner since I usually train at a 10:20 mile and race at a 9:30 mile. Well, with very little effort on the track I was running 8 minute miles. Of course, I usually train on some serious hills and the track is flat but still thats a huge difference!

I am adding one track workout every week to my training schedule just to change things up a little. Plus I can wear my headphones on the track! It won't be the typical speed workout, just a change of scenery and a chance to get some flat miles in. My coach tells me that flat races can be tough on someone who trains on hills because it requires different muscle. ANd I thought I would have an advantage!

Congratulations Pat on the CDC! I would love to see a picture of your penguin medal! Sorry about the blisters though.

Happy Training Everyone!
Cecilia

Mel--We've been watching most of the preseason games too. You know I'm watching the Bengals game tonight--and rooting for the REDSKINS!!!! I hear ya about starting out too fast--I am notorious for doing that. I do most of my runs on the treadmill because of the heat, but the steady pacing is helpful too.

that skins game was the most depressing thing i think i've ever seen. i had to stop after the first half. granted i was leaving to go home then. but i didn't even turn on the rest when i got home. i don't know what they were doing, but it certainly wasn't playing football... :sad2:

thanks for the welcomes everyone! i was in such a bad mood last night i forgot to set my alarm for 645 so i could get up and do my 5 miles before work. blah. hopefully it won't be too hot when i get home so i can do it then.

Welcome sugaswim & Janet!

Pung - I second TXBelle!!! Put the mile in. If you're looking to marathon in 08, you should not even be thi nking about tiem right now. Just get the steps in. 16 minutes miles is what it takes for Disney, so that's a starting goal, but pace will come with time as long as you do the distance.

Pat - COngrats!

Mel - COngrats on a good run! Thanks fo rdoing the bracelets!

Partial dirve by this am, will try to catch up tominight. Tryiong to actually work at work. :teeth:

Newsflash:

I can fly! I can fly!!! :dumbo: :dumbo: :dumbo:

VERY hilly bike path on Saturday, but I got myslef up at 6 (to eat) so I could hit the path at 7 and enjoy teh cool. DH told me it was only suppoed to be 50 by 8 am, but I didn't want to take any chances. Needed to prove I was a runner again!!!

Did my 10k 2 weeks ago at 11:44.
Did 5 miles last week at 12+ :confused3

Mile 1 - 10:55
Mile 2 - 10:33
Mile 3 - 10:35
Mile 4 - 10:30
Mile 5 - 9:35!!!!

Ave: 10:26!!!!!! (If you do the math. I'm off a sec. somewhere, but close enuogh.) Darn 10:35 ruined my neg splits, but I can live with that! Did I mention it was VERY hilly? The worst was 0.4 miles, but it was constantly rolling.

The real bummer. It ws teh alumni run Saturday for my hs cross team. My coach no longer notifies me, so I told my brothe rto let me know. He told me SUnday afternoon. I could have had the great run in frotn of my former coach. Then again. he would not think it was so great, so I'll just run with my happy little victory!! I can fly! :dumbo:

More about people other than me later! I was just dying to share, though!

Good Monday morning all.... :sunny:

What a weekend. As much as I love this weather, I end up working outside all weekend. Which in a way is a good thing. My paddocks are perfectly clean. However, this morning I had nothing much to wear to work on account of I didn't do the laundry or any one of a dozen or so things that should have gotten done inside the house.

I also did not do my LW yesterday. :furious: I need to switch my LWs to Saturday. Working outside all day Saturday made me so tired on Sunday morning. I put off my LW, and then, well, it just never happened. That's OK. If I'm going to start following MFM I think the LWs are scheduled for Saturday anyway.

I also started doing intervals on the TM. 10 of walking, 5 of running. My plan is to train that way. I'll try it for a couple of weeks and if it seems to be working I will continue that for the "real" training. I did it this morning and it worked pretty well.

I never got to go shoe or waist pack shopping either. Grrrrrr.

Mel - Sounds like we might not be able to hook up, but keep me posted. If it doesn't happen, well, I only have to wait five more months. I probably won't be able to do the Wed night chats very often. But let me know if I miss something good!

Sunny - You made that Pluto? Wow, that's really good. Your dad is great with the marigold. Very artsy! :thumbsup2 I hope you are feeling well today. And everyday for that matter!

Janet - Welcome! You'll learn so much here. I am walking most of the Half and this is my first time. I too am doing WW, but not too well, I'm embarrassed to say.

Pat - Congratulations! :woohoo: :wizard: for the feets!

Krista - Doesn't Stephen know where the kitchen is??? You were doing something important there! ;) Hi Stephen! :wave2: Hi Hines! :wave2:

Dave - I hear you about making better choices. I have been doing the same. Amazing how that happens, isn't it? I like how you integrated sightseeing into your training. :smooth:

Bill - Uh oh...looking at your training plan, maybe I shouldn't be doing 10w/5r. Maybe distance is the way to go. :confused3

Tiff - Our stupid computer at home bit the big one too. We just replaced the hard drive not that long ago. It's only about two years old. Grrrr.

Carrie - Wow! Awesome pace! :worship:

OK, alright...I'll do some real work now..... :surfweb:

Carrie - :cool1: on the run! You held a great pace!

Cecilia - Great job on the track workout! Thoses "speed" WO are really fun!
consider myself a slow runner since I usually train at a 10:20 mile and race at a 9:30 mile. Well, with very little effort on the track I was running 8 minute miles. Of course, I usually train on some serious hills and the track is flat but still thats a huge difference!
I totally understand what you mean! for 8 MPM!

Pat - :cheer2: on the CDC! I so want to see pics of the race and your medal! Hope the foot feels better soon! :wizard:

Pungodingy - I am going to agree with everyone that a good mile pace depends on you. We have WISHers that range from a 7 MPM to a 20 MPM. Also pace depends on the length of the run/walk. It is important to get the steps in tough. If you are aiming for the 2008 WDW marathon, I would work on training to train....Just get the steps in to get your body ready for the milage needed to train for a marathon. Good luck! :wizard: And :cheer2: for starting.

Lynne - What can I say but WOW! :woohoo: :yay: :thumbsup2

To all the new people! :welcome: !!! So glad you have come and joined the party:
Just finished my 3 mile SR for the day. Took my JRT with me for the 1st and last mile. Not real sure about the breakdown but I think it was about...
1st mile - 8:30
2nd mile - 8:20
3rd mile - 10:00 - JRT had enough so we walked the last 1/4 mile. Poor thing, she is so tired now. :woohoo:
I MAY swim later today....note the MAY! I want to be like Lynne! :teeth: She is my hero!
OK...Debating on doing a trail marathon on Oct 7th. I would do it slow and count it as a LR. This would have to be how my training would go.
8/19: 10
8/26: 14
9/2: 10 (it’s Labor Day weekend)
9/9: 16
9/16: 12
9/23: 18
9/30: 10
10/7: Marathon
Ron..who kinda trains me said I was in good enough shape to do it but still debating! :rolleyes1

Notice to 2007 Full Marathoners doing MfM:

1 week from today, we stop training to train and start training! :scared1:

Hi, everyone!
Back from our weekend in gorgeous New England.
Walked 4.72 miles with my Aunt on Saturday morning and then to and from church yesterday morning and then walking on the beach yesterday afternoon. It was really pleasant and not too tiring.

Hoping to stay on track with training this week, but we are getting ready to take DD to college on Friday. She checks in to band camp Friday afternoon and will be in temporary housing until next Wednesday night when we move her into her dorm.

Christa – Please tell Bree that we miss her. She looks absolutely wonderful!

Bill – Geez, I can’t believe you pulled off a 10 mile run with no advance planning and at such an awesome pace. Great job! :thumbsup2

Kristi – I am sorry you are having hip issues. I really, really recommend stretching your hamstrings very well. It makes such a huge difference to the pain level in my hip, so I am hoping that might help your situation, too. I don’t want anyone to be in as much pain as I had, so I am hoping everyone can learn from my experience. :grouphug:

Mel – Great job on your 3 miles! I am so glad you are doing better! :goodvibes:

Terri – Congratulations on being able to sustain those intervals! Your splits are great! :woohoo:

Janet – :welcome: You are going to love it here! This is where I find all my inspiration and re-charge my motivation! And the Minnie is an awesome experience! Can’t wait to see you there as part of the WISH team!

Pat - Congratulations on your Penguin medal! I am so sorry your feet suffered, but it is awesome that you sustained that pace notwithstanding the pain. I thought of you guys Saturday morning while I was walking with my aunt. So glad your DH had a great time too!

Lynne – So happy to see you here!

Carrie – Great job, sweetie! I always knew you could fly! :dumbo:

Judy – Give yourself credit for all that cross-training! Oh, and we will be coming back to DE through NY on 8/27 in case you are up for brunch!

To everyone who is worried about getting gel, etc on the plane – maybe the thing to do is pack it in the checked luggage (in a ziplock bag to be sure it doesn’t get popped) and if for some reason that gets lost, someone with a car could stock up on it on the way to the resort and fill everyone’s orders. :teeth: For DL, I think I am going to pack some in checked luggage AND plan on buying more if I need it when we get there.

Nothing else going on except that your training is keeping me inspired and disciplined. :goodvibes:

Thanks, all. Back soon!

Hi WISH Team!

Wow! We've got a lot of chatter going on!

Pat, how you feeling today? Hope whatever it is gets fixed real soon!

Cam, did you keep up with your Aunt then, or is she still traveling fast?

I'm still thinking of our beautiful Bree! I love that you posted that pic Christa, thanks! I'm old, can't remember if I already said that.
:confused3

I'll plan on WISH Team Chat Wednesday at 8:30 too. We will probably want to pick a "meeting room" since main chat lobby will be in use for some other topic. How about we pick room 2? For anyone interested, I'll be in Main Chat Lobby tonight. I am hoping to ressurect the WISH Chat like we used to have on Mondays at 9:00 p.m. EST. If you get a chance, stop by... for Everything WISH hour. (I've got a link in the thread on the main WISH board)

Sunny - You made that Pluto? Wow, that's really good. Your dad is great with the marigold. Very artsy! :thumbsup2 :

I was wondering that myself   I'm going to have to have Mom check the bottom for my initials. I assumed I made it because her house is full of my childhood ceramics that I did make. "Make" as in paint the already poured molds and have a grown-up put in the kiln. Either way, it didn't require a whole lot of talent on my part. ;) If I didn't make it, I bought it on my first trip to WDW in 1976.

Dave mentioned avoiding "learned helplessness". I don't think I have a problem wtih that (I'm not exactly sure what that is) because I am constantly getting scolded for not asking for help and still doing things that I should wait for others to do. But i am definitely struggling with adapting to an invalid mindset. I pretty much sit around searching my body for new pain and thinking "oh no, there's a pain in my ankle, wait, did my knee just pop???" That is sooooooo not like me. I remember forcing my body to move after 20 milers and pretending I felt no pain at all. But then again, I have a lot of time on my hands to just think about what pain is popping up where.

The bottom line as i see it now: If I was 70 years old I could just accept that my body is in this state and I have good days and bad days and take the good as they come. At 42 with a 6 yo (and 16yo), making 75% of the household income and being a prime candidate for gastric bypass surgery without an exercise addiction, this simply won't do. Just three more days until I get the wisdom and insight of Dr Faber and one of his esteemed colleagues. I am counting the miniutes. But I just don't know how to present my case. Is it worse? I'm not sure, is it better? possibly, but I CAN'T LIVE THIS WAY.

My parents have been sleuthing the family tree of major back problems. Turns out all of them (and there are many) were from trauma. My uncle fell off a scaffold three stories up, my aunt was thrown 50 feet from a car, my two cousins were in car accidents. The only one that matches my case was paternal grandma who hand spinal stenosis that became unmanageable in her LATE 60s. :confused3

But really, if I don't move, I don't have much pain. During the day I only take my percocet if I have to do something like go shopping or to an apt. But the bad news is there is now considerable pain in my right hip flexor and at times I can't move my right leg when laying or sitting. I have to use my arms to move it.

I'm sorry, I vowed to myself I wouldn't commandeer the thread for my injuries anymore. Well as Britney says, "oops, I did it again" ;)

Among my list of questions for the drs is "is there anyway I can still walk/run one or both of the half/full marathons Jan 6,7, with or without surgery". Several questions later I'll bring up work... I have my priorities of course!

I'll be there if I don't forgt the time or have a power outage! :wizard:

Lily -- Thanks for asking about my aunt's pace. The fact is, she just naturally walks so much faster than me, though I did fine keeping up. Still breathless a lot of the time, which is very embarassing.

Sunny -- I am glad to see you here and am really hoping your doctor (and his colleague) gives you a lot of valuable information about where you are and where you are going. I will be thinking of you and sending :goodvibes: and pixiedust: and a huge

Oh, Sunny! Please hang in there! I was thinking of you - I knew your appt. was coming up soon. Just hang on a few more days and see what this doctor has to say.

And come here to vent anytime! I know I miss your posts.

Here's a great big ole cyber  and even more pixiedust: for when you see the doctor this week!
