With Verizon but thinking of switching to AT&T

Thanks everyone for your input. I've heard of the Verizon/iPhone rumor as well and am really hoping it happens. I think for now I am going to play the waiting game and see if Verizon does indeed get the iPhone. I do like the service I get thru Verizon (DH has AT&T thru work) and really don't want to give it up. If they don't get the iPhone I might have to look into the Droid.

You only have to add the data plan if you get a phone that requires it, there are plenty of phones that do not require the upgrade, I just did DS's phone last month and had several options to choose from, there is a tab at the top that allows you to see additional phones that do not require a data plan...they just open to the best phones with data plans to get you hooked.

When you are comparing prices, be sure you are looking apples to apples. VZW and AT&T prices are generally very similar.

If you want email, internet, etc on a VZW phone Droid2, DroidX and Incredible are all very good phones. I could go into much more detail on these phones vs. iPhone but I won't on the board. In short .. they are faster and offer more than the iPhone.

I'm in southeastern Pa and have had AT&T for years, with little to no trouble at all with coverage. A few years back when my contract was up, I switched to Sprint because I fell in love with a phone they carried exclusively. Bad idea, I ended up back with AT&T within the week because of such horrible reception.

I think part of the issues are bad phones, not just the coverage area.

It doesn't hurt that I get 25 percent off my primary line because of working for the area's largest trauma center. Verizon doesn't offer me that.

Actually, AT &T does have this! There is a package for 700 minutes (not enough for me) and then goes to a 1400 minute plan where you get 10 numbers for free!

Our AT&T family plan gives us minutes (I think 750) every month. We always carry a large number of them over because of the free nights and weekends. One DS uses his cell as his only phone, talks to GF an hour every evening and it doesn't count against the family plan minutes. When we talk to each other there's no deduction, either.

Interesting...I thought I'd be singing the praises of AT&T, as I've been with them for years and been generally happy with the service and price, but after reading this thread, I might consider switching to Verizon.

Hubby & I both had AT&T phones, but when we relocated from Tennessee to South Carolina, his company provided him with a Verizon cell phone with data package. AT&T seemed to work fine in both our old and new cities, so I stuck with them for my personal phone.

But I notice that when we're on the road travelling, my phone often gets no reception while his does. Same thing when camping in somewhat remote locations.

Before he had a Verizon phone, I just accepted the loss in signal, thinking other providers also lacked coverage in the area. But even here in the southeast, it seems that Verizon has better coverage than AT&T outside the cities.

att and verizon are both working on their 4G/LTE networks right now. I don't know about verizon, but I know att is definitely focusing on mobility. Every project I touch these days has something to do with mobility.
If att isn't the best network now, it will be.
The contract with apple doesn't expire until next summer, at which time, I wouldn't be surprised if it were renewed again. There will always be iPhone on verizon rumors, but for the past two years, that's all they've been.
I know I'm biased, but I did have verizon before switching to att, prior to even starting work here and I always thought att was better. It really depends on the area you live in. Things are going to change a lot over the next few years though.
If you do choose att, let me know before you order. I can give you advice on phones/plans, plus I get referral credit :)

Just check which phone you buy from Verizon.

DS and I just upgraded and we picked phones that only required a $9.99/month data plan.

We had the same thought as you! Been with verzion MANY years over 10 and went to at&t for the iphone. i love it!!!!

LOVE Verizon. It doesn't hurt that everyone I work with, all of my family, all of my boyfriend's family, have Verizon.

Don't discount the Droid OS phones like HTC or some of the LG phones (love LG). I read an article the other day for my MBA class that the Android OS is overtaking iPhone. Something to think about, but it will be personal to you.

FWIW my boyfriend's brother got a new job where he is mobile a lot and needs a phone with good graphics for his sales job. He almost went from Verizon to AT&T to get the iPhone until he came to the realization that:

1) EVERY single family member and most of his friends are on Verizon

2) HTC makes some D*AMN good phones.

He went with the Eris and loves it.

We switched from Verizon to ATT almost 2 years ago (had Sprint before that, they were the worst with customer service and prices) and it was the best thing we ever did for our situation. Our monthly bill for 4 phones went down almost $70 with At& T. We also have BETTER coverage with AT&T and LESS dropped calls in our area than when we had Verizon. ATT recently added a tiered data plan option that starts at only $15 which is pretty new, and they also are the only ones that have rollover minutes within the family plan. We have over 1200 extra minutes that have rolled over since we started with them, needless to say we will probably be going to a plan with less minutes because of this! In the past month I have upgraded my Iphone to the Iphone 4 and again am nothing but happy! Havent lost a call yet, even without the free bumper guard! Just my opinion and my experience, but definitely ask people in your area about coverage with any provider, and even within providers different phones have different reception capabilities.

DH and I are both with Verizon. We have 3 phones on plan--1 cheapo and 2 Droids. Our phone bill is discounted 19% because we are educators. I have wonderful coverage. I had a bad experience with AT&T--it took 2 years for them to finally agree that I did not order a new cell phone and pay me back the money they charged me for it. I won't have service with them agian.

I've had AT&T since day one of having a cell phone which is now 14yrs I think and I got the iphone last year.....loved it, loved everything about it including the service however, my thoughts changed in July.

The service sucks now, dropped calls, network not good for internet now....I don't know what happened but when Verizon gets the service capability for the iphone I WILL SWITCH!!!!!!

Don't go with AT& T

Really investigate what ATT coverage is like in your area. There are MANY areas, even big cities and towns, where your ATT phone is only useful as a paperweight.

I will never have an iphone, since we're in a tough spot living between an airport and 2 towns with no cell towers... verizon is the only carrier that works around here.

:)

By far the biggest complaint iPhone users have is the carrier - AT&T. The number of dissatisfied customers is huge. They love the device but hate the phone service.

I read about a month ago that Verizon will definately have the iPhone next year...the relase date for them is a secret but the big rumor is January

I have had ATT for 15 years. Have the iPhone 4, and none of the dropped calls issues people are complaining about.

As far as Verizon getting the iPhone, that rumor has been going around since ATT got the first iPhone- I read an article once that summarized the other manufacturer's smart phones - they're reportedly "as good as the iPhone" - while I've never heard of the iPhone being "as good as an incredible, chocolate, blackberry, rumor, etc..."

Another great thing about ATT is that they use SIM cards - if you lose/drop/damage your phone, you can buy a "go phone" - prepaid - insert your SIM (if you have the iPhone 4, you will have to go to an ATT store and get a regular sized SIM, as it uses as micro-sim) and use it until your phone is repaired/replaced.

We have had Verizon for many years, but DS changed over to AT&T to get the I-Phone. He is not a fan of AT&T at all now - at least not in comparison with Verizon. He says his coverage with Verizon was MUCH better. I'm due to up-grade my phone, and wanted something like the IPhone, but didn't want to switch carriers. I've been looking at the Droid X or Droid 2 and think that will be my choice. I know several people who have them and like them very much, and I won't have to worry about coverage as it's Verizon!:goodvibes

We had AT&T for several years but the "dropped calls" got so bad we switched to StraightTalk we got the phones at Walmart and so far we have loved it! We are saving about $145.00 a month and we get more services!! With AT&T we had unlimited family text, shared 2100 minutes between 4 phones and my DH had the data plan on his phone. We were paying about 265.00. After we switched to StraightTalk my DH and I have unlimited Internet, unlimited text, and unlimited talk for $45.00 each a month, and my DH has 1000 talk minutes, 1000 text and internet service for $30.00. We are REALLY happy with the change!!
