With the lion king making 29.3 million on opening weekend and being number 1

The only movie I've seen in 3D that was decent was Avatar. All the others are, meh... I don't plan on paying to see a 3D movie again. What I do hope, however, is that when they remaster for 3D that they also remaster for blu-ray. Disney animation in blu-ray is simply amazing. Seeing the older animated movies in blu-ray was like seeing them for the first time--the detail and color are outstanding. I want to see what was originally hand drawn and painted--not some digital trickery.

Not that I want more 3-D, but I think it'll be...

Little Mermaid
Beauty and the Beast
Aladdin

I, too, wish they'd just re-release the movies.

Before they put Beauty & the Beast out on DVD again last year they did a very limited re-release in theatres just for one weekend...it was not in 3D though. I took my nieces and was shocked that there were only two other families in the theatre with us. Some of that might be due to lack of advertising because they didn't do nearly the amount of promotion like they did with Lion King, but maybe the 3D did attract people? :confused3 I'd be curious to know how the regular version of Lion King did this past weekend. Some movie theatres around here were playing both, the 3D version and the 2D. (I didn't know that until today, we'd have to gone to the 2D one yesterday if I had know that was an option)

not sure where you are coming up with the 40 million, it was 29.3 estimated for this weekend..............however 17 years ago when it opened the first time i believe it did 40 million.

okay may be i put the wrong number i saw it on twitter and didn't may be i mixed up the numbers.

Nightmare Before Christmas would be great in 3-D. It is so immersive as it is in 2-D.

For the second week it number one beating brad Pitt movie I know it supposed to only be out for two weeks but do you think Disney will keep it another week. I don't think they thought it do this good and be number one two weeks in a row. May be now they will have Pizarro make the lion king 2.

Ha! I think it's hilarious that an almost 20 year old movie is beating out the new movies that have come out this last two weeks. I'm quite sure Disney's wheels are turning.

Disney did the same thing with Imax a few years back. 1/1/02 they re-released BatB, and then at Christmas 2002 they re-released The Lion King. The movies were touched up for the Imax screen and also had new animation sequences added.

Aladdin was supposed to be next I believe, but they weren't happy with the box office performance and nixed it.

Certainly the performance this time has been strong, so maybe they will revive the practice. I don't really care about the 3d, but I'm sure Disney thinks that's a reason for the success.

I think it has more to do with some not liking the Imax big screen format and the (at the time) out of whack ticket prices for it. This time the title was available in the pricier 3D format, but also in 2D if you didn't want to pay 3D prices.

Hopefully they will continue.

Part of the reason for the performance is the very limited release. People knew that if they wanted to see it, they had a very small window of opportunity but the other movies would still be around next week.

Still, I agree that the fact that a 17-year-old movie is the box office champ 2 weeks in a row is great.

I wonder how much Disney spent to reformat and market this release.

Very true...also there is not much out right now in the way of kid's movies. Still they promoted Moneyball to death and Lion King still beat it. I remember Lion King being out in IMAX, but we didn't go see it because the closet IMAX then was over an hour away and it wasn't cheap. I'm hoping now they will re-release some more classics.

I hope this will spur Disney to have some of the classics in movie theaters again (3d or not). I think it would give a whole new generation a chance to experience these greats in the format they were meat to be enjoyed!

Pinnocchio
Dumbo
Bambi
Peter Pan
The Aristocats
Lady and the Tramp
Jungle Book
101 Dalmations
