(With a nod to Jimmy Buffet)
Heres a Love Story from a Slightly Different Point of View!
Love Story = our love affair with WDW
Characters Involved=2 women, hovering in and around middle age, who love to travel to WDW to let out the child within
After unpacking at our beautiful OKW studio, Publix was next on our list of stops so we hopped into our cherry red Vue and off we went. We did some controlled shopping (meaning we were starving to death and tried not to buy everything in sight) and by the time we got back to the resort, I had even stopped turning on the windshield wipers in lieu of the turn signal. We woke up refreshed from a short nap and headed out to our traditional first park-of-the-trip, the Magic Kingdom. Im not sure when this became a tradition, but I knew it was so when I attempted to change schedules this trip. My dear friend, who allows me to plan to my hearts content, put her foot down when her trip schedule (I think shes getting a bit spoiled shes now requesting her trip schedule in Excel spreadsheet) did not include the Magic Kingdom as the first stop. So the tradition has been born. We boarded the bus, went through security, popped in our annual passes and, as usual, got a bit misty eyed when passing through the tunnel and walking into Town Square. There are so many things that pass through my mind in those first few seconds. The anticipation of a fun filled week, memories of past trips, and especially, thoughts of the good times I shared at the World with my folks who are now gone For me, its an emotion thats difficult to describe, but I sense that many of you experience it, too. We meandered down Main Street but quickened our steps as the scent of Caseys hot dogs filled our noses. It had been a long time since breakfast! To heck with cholesterol on to hot dogs and cheese fries!
Following our artery clogging indulgence, we headed off to Buzz Lightyear (our strategy grab a fast pass so we can hop back on) and after getting beaten for the 67th or 68th time (I won once but as my friend says, even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in awhile) we made our way through Fantasyland and walked right into the Haunted Mansion. Leotas tombstone is brilliant, isnt it? The subtleties surrounding this attraction are so great, but do you notice that so many people are in such a hurry that they miss them all? After our quota of Grim Grinning Ghosts we headed back to Mickeys Philharmagic, which is fast becoming a favorite. Behind us in line, a young person was answering the rapid fire Disney questions of her friends. Mary, my friend, turned and asked Do you work here? to which the young lady replied yes, and prior to that she had visited the World 41 times! We chatted through the queue and thanked her for making magic. She said thanks and asked if we could pass that nice message along to her folks who had paid for 5 years of college and are having trouble understanding her choice of occupation. (What's the matter with them? Don't they appreciate all the perks of Disney their beloved daughter now brings with her?)
The Philharmagic show was great! My favorite story about this attraction happened on our last trip when I was seated next to the Harley man. This gentleman, dressed in beautiful Harley leather and with many Harley tattoos, (by the way, I love Harley-Davidson. Their home is right here in Wisconsin....(please do not "moo" at me)... followed his family into the theater. Ive never seen anyone who looked less like they wanted to be in that particular place at that particular time, but he was obviously trying to please his family. He hesitated putting on his 3-D glasses for a minute or two, but finally did so. Out of the corner of my eye I couldnt help but watch him he flinched at the flying baton and began to smile around the time of the lions and by the time the jewels came floating out, his hand began to reach for them. When the show was over and the lights went on, he was grinning from ear to ear! Now thats Disney magic!
By now, it was time for Wishes so we grabbed a great spot near the Crystal Palace. Al Weiss, Disney Imagineers, Disney CMs anyone listening We think Wishes is just fantastigorical! This is so trite, but what a truly magical way to end the evening! Bravo! I cheer Tinks descent every single time. (and I hope they pay her well!) Does anyone else have trouble getting all the way through the show with dry eyes? The story is wonderful, the music is wonderful, the synchronation is wonderful and watching the childrens reactions just warms my little pea pickin' heart!
Well, back to the bus and the resort and were both happily exhausted after our first taste of vacation. Sleep would not be forthcoming however, thanks to a tiny baby on the other side of our lock-off door. A very tiny baby who was not yet sleeping through the night hence, neither did we. Now weve stayed in studios before and while some noise in inevitable, this was ridiculous. We began to wonder if the entire family was somehow related to Jerry Seinfelds loud talkers as we could hear every spoken word. I later suggested to the front desk that Disney invoke Considerate buildings for people who want quiet when you check in you sign a pledge to be considerate of your neighbors. Okay, so maybe thats a bit far-fetched but I dont make much sense when sleep deprived. Understand, we both love children, but the good Lord is very smart...he gives us incredible patience and tolerance during child rearing years and then sloooooowly takes it back (probably to pass on to new parents). About this time of life we still love children...just from a greater distance.
Not to worry, though, tomorrow would be "sleep in" day according to the spreadsheet. Kind of like the Mickey Mouse Club days... but for old Mouseketeers.
Coming soon...The Hoop Dee Doop Dee Do! Thanks for listening!
