Wishful thinking?

So I made reservations at The Plaza, halfway thinking that I read somewhere that you can get the same ice cream there as you can at the Parlor, without the lines.

Now, I'm looking over menus, getting excited for my trip 70+days out, and I don't see sundaes, etc., on the menu. Was it wishful thinking on my part, or can you order ice cream at the Plaza?

There's nothing wrong with going to a restaurant for dessert. DW and I have been to B&C just for ice cream several times and it never crossed my mind that it was a problem. Sometimes I want to eat the rare ice cream I allow myself out of a glass bowl with a metal spoon along with a glass of water sitting in an air conditioned room. I can't really think of what else to say to anyone who has an issue with that.

It was reasons like this that places like BOG went to pre-fixe menu. I'm sure there would be plenty of people here complaining if people were making ressies at somewhere like 'ohana, Via Napoli or Le Cellier for just the dessert. Just an example.

Beaches and Creme is designed as an ICE CREAM SHOP with food.

Plaza is a RESTAURANT that has dessert.

It seems to me that there are many areas (in life, as well as at Disney) where there's a tension between what's allowable, and those who take advantage of what's allowable for their own ends.

In this case, I'm looking forward to the atmosphere, the comfort food and finally getting one of those scrumptious sundaes I've been eyeing. So, I'm knocking out several birds with one stone. If sundaes weren't available, I would still keep the ADR. By the same token, if at noon on that Wednesday, I'm not in the mood for the meatloaf, I'm going to order what I am in the mood for.

I'm not out to shortchange the waitress by ordering a cup of coffee just to get a table, but I'll also be traveling alone. So maybe I'm taking up a table for two that could be put to better use by a larger family...

This! A special treat, in a special place!

And just a footnote about how this all came up. I was originally considering just QS at Columbia Harbor House or Cosmic Ray's for that time slot, undecided because of the widely different opinions posted. Then I caught a spot by AJ on Disney Food Blog where she complimented the Plaza for its comfort food and that reminded me that I had even another experience to try instead!

Because there are people who actually want to eat a meal there, and it's taking up space and loss of a valuable ADR if someones just going for ice cream that they can get next door.

Unless and until there is a minimum included to dine at any restaurant, patrons may uorder as much or as little as they choose. The management gets to decide the parameters, not random guests.

I am not so sure this is true. BOG opened for breakfast with a fixed price menu and did not adhere to this for one second. Clearly the management chose to allow folks to order as little or as much as they chose.

As to Beaches and Cream, if we followed your dictates as to what constitutes an acceptable food order, many who want to enjoy a meal in this quaint tiny restaurant would disagree that ice cream is all that need be ordered. Just because one decided to classify any reastaurat as an ice cream shop rather than a restaurant does not mean Disney agrees. B&C is classified as a TS restaurant, not ice cream shop.

OP- order what you want. If you choose to start with your sundae, as I have been known to do, have fun. If you then have room for dinner, order it, If not, no worries. You are well within what is deemed acceptable by Disney, and honestly, they get to chose, not us.

Thank you! No, I'm looking forward to a sandwich and some kind of ice cream--a shake, if sundaes weren't available. They always look so good, but the lines at the Parlor always put me off!
Just want to say my son LOVES the milkshakes there - they're almost like glasses of ice cream with whipped cream and a cherry on top they are SO thick! So if you happen to be in the mood for a shake when you go, I don't think you'll be disappointed. Whatever you get, enjoy :goodvibes

BOG went to fixed price to make more money. That is the only reason. And yes, you can go to any restaurant you mentioned for dessert. At Ohana you'll pay quite a lot for it since it's fixed price, but that's your prerogative.

I once (back in the day) went to outback steakhouse with coworkers just for a chocolate thunder from down under. I guess I didn't visit per the original intent of that place either, but they managed.

I've also been to B&C just for food and no ice cream. It is what it is.

Agreed.
I suspect the Food and Beverage Department @ WDW has realised that many of their guests only eat at Magic Kingdom from a perception of hunger and no true love of the offerings. Bet they'd like a slice of the profits a variety of well regarded restaurants can bring.

I can't imagine going into a restaurant and worrying about what other people chose to order for their "meal". Make a reservation wherever you choose, order whatever your heart (or tummy) desires, eat, and enjoy! :)

I thought that the Plaza doesn't take ADRs any more for at least part of the day? You can't argue that you shouldn't eat there for desert only because it deprives someone of an ADR when they don't do ADRs.
