This sounds appealing to me, maybe for a goal for 2006. :p

I was curious though how you can walk and meet WDW's requirements -
All athletes participating in the Half Marathon must be able to maintain a 16-minute per mile pace, finishing the Half Marathon in 3 ½ hours. Anyone not able to maintain a 16-minute per mile pace will be picked up and transported to the finish.

Am I off, but does this sound almost impossible to do by walking? This sounds more like jogging or running to me. I don't know, I've only been walking for a little over a month, but I'm enjoying it and have done it faithfully everyday for thirty minutes.

Are ya'll really walking or jogging?
Is this like a super fit group going or all skills?
Is this the first year ya'll have planned this?
Thanks!

Someone once posted that to be exact you have to walk 3.8 MPH in order to do a mile in 16minutes.............
I have a treadmill and have tried it,,,,,,,,,,,,and it is hard
Which is why I have decided to jog/walk it!

Good luck....
hope you join.

We're a group of all different fitness levels, but I would assume by the end of the year, we're all better be more fit then we are now to do this marathon! thhis is the first year we are doing this. It came up in a thread about a year ago and we all decided to walk together in '05!
You're right about needing to hit a 16 minute mile- and that's what we're all aiming for, but from what I've read, if you don't hit the 16 minute mile averasge and are slightly behind, they wiull allow you to continue.

I can walk a consistent pace of 15 minute miles for at least 6 miles. Yes, it is a quick pace, but I've always been a fast walker. I think that I'm going to try Renee's strategy of jogging and walking. I've found that I can jog for 10 minutes and then walk for 3-4 minutes and get my wind back, allowing me to jog again.

We've got a while to train and we'll all be more fit just by trying.

Doreen,
That's what I am going to do too. I have been running/walking 5 minute intervals and it really helps when you walk again to get your wind back. I don't think I could run the whole thing, but this might be doable. If it turns out running is too hard, then I will just walk. By training this way, it should help me be in better shape.

When we were there in January watching the runners, most of them were switching between walking and running- an that was for the full marathon. Actually most of the people we saw were walking. I would imagine that that is a very effective way of doing a marathon- I can only hope to move my feet fast enough to break into a jog ocassionally!
