Wish Trippers...Unite!! Volume One

I don't remember the hours of the Wish Lounge ,we stopped in around 4:00.In the "Bunny Book " you'll receive at GKTW, it states the VIP lounges at Epcot are open Mon -Fri ,9-5 .We were too late ,used first aid instead .

I am not on MySpace. If someone has MySpace, there is a former wish trip family there that I would like someone to contact. Please PM me for the link.

I just thought of a question, I don't know if it's been asked or not and if it has i'm sorry. What are the hours for the wish lounge @ magic kingdom and lounge @ Epcot?

becca

Here is the link to the wdwinfo.com article on the Wish Lounge. It says:

Disney Wish Lounge

The Disney Wish Lounge opened in January 2007 and is located in the Magic Kingdom Park. This is a place where children with life-threatening illnesses, who are a part of the Disney Wish program, can come take a break from their hectic day in the park and not have to go back to the resort or Give Kids the World Village. The Disney Wish Lounge is staffed by Guest Relations and can be accessed through First Aid. Guests may enjoy light refreshments, DVDs, games, books, TV and much more.
The hours are 11:30AM - 7:00PM.
The Walt Disney Company fulfills more than 55,000 wishes annually.

Bill,
When Karlyn's mom was talking with the Make A Wish folks here yesterday, she mentioned the wishtrippers and the disboards and how helpful everyone is here. She told them that the info is great, the people are great and it is a wonderful place to network. She told them that we had learned lots of things about GKTW, wish trips and so much more. They asked her about how they could track it down and see what we have here. She is going to email them the link. They are very excited to be able to give wish families any info they can and thought we might be just one of those resources. Not that we are out there recruiting but we ARE out there recruiting!:cheer2:

Hi Everyone:
Sorry I posted once and then disappeared. I have been so busy this summer. My wish grandchild and his family are in Seattle visiting for a couple of weeks and it has been very hectic. Awesome but hectic. I was so happy at how well Justin is doing. He has started the maintenance phase of his treatment so he only is getting chemo once a month. He was able to play as much as he wanted to and we did alot of stuff that they usually dont get to do at home.
We will be going to Orlando on Aug 10th- Aug 16th. My husband and I are so happy that they are allowing us to stay at the GKTW. We would have gone anyway but this makes it even better.
Here are our plans so far:
Check in on the 10th and hang out at the village.
Monday we will spend the morning at Future World. I thoght that the kids would enjoy riding Soarin, Nemo and Turtle Talk with Crush. Then our plan is to leave the park and go back for a rest or swim. We are doing the Fantasmic Dinner package and have a 4pm adr at Mama Melroses. Kind of an early dinner but I figured we could do a few things at the Studios such as Toy Story Mania and maybe Rock n Roller coaster. Justin wont ride that one but his sister really wants too.
Tuesday we will spend at Seaworld. The plan for Wed. is Animal Kingdom in the morning until maybe 1 or 2. Then we will go back and rest or swim. We are having dinner that night at the Liberty Tree Tavern in the MK and then we plan to watch Spectro.
Thursday we are going to Universal and are having breakfast with Spiderman. We will stay there as long as we like but want to be back in time for the Christmas party.
Friday is our full day at MK. It is also his sisters birthday so she is has an appt at the Bibbity Boutique and then we are having lunch in the castle.
Saturday we will be checking out but flights arent until late so we may go back to Universal.
I have told everyone that we wont be able do do everything so lets just go for the best of the best and see where the magic takes us. Well I guess I have rambled on long enough. I have been absorbing everyones questions and answers and really appreciate everything I have learned here. Hopefully this will help to make the trip go smoother.

Angie: Only a few weeks away for you all! I'm sure the excitement was building during your visit with your grandchldren - I'll bet they can hardly wait! It sounds like you've been doing lots of planning...but I love your motto - go where the magic take us!

We'll look forward to hearing more!

Well, i took Bill's advice and uploaded some pictures to photobucket...but now I can't find the instructions for posting them into my Pre-trip! Does anyone remember where that post was...there was one with beautiful instructions...?

I realize how few pictures we have of me and my husband, so you'll see more of the boys...no loss...they're the cute ones in the family anyway!

Angie,

Thanks SO MUCH for posting. We are all excited to hear about your plans. :teacher: Your, "Just Go Where the Magic Takes You," pixiedust: will have to become our thread motto, I think.

Your plans are commendable. You might be mildly interested to know that I grew up in Seattle. :thumbsup2

What you have posted here is PLENTY to start your own trip thread.:surfweb: I suggest it. It can be very helpful. See the link in my signature below for instructions on doing that.

First upload photos from your computer to photo bucket. There is now an option in photobucket to resize your photos to 640 x 480. Under choose files, click on "reduce to" and choose this size. After uploading the picture, go back to albums and click in the IMG window on the bottom link under the picture. That will copy it to your clipboard.

Now go to the post where you want the pictures. Paste the pictures where you want them by hitting 'v' while holding down the Ctrl key.

I haven't been on this thread in awhile, it got long while I was away! Well, longer.

Ambersmom: I used to work at WDW and would try to eat at full service all the time without ADRs. Even during the busiest periods I was able to get in without an ADR. I bet they would be even more accommodating to a Wish family. We always try to go out of our way!

If you want to see characters (since it has been mentioned): The Hat at DHS and Character Connection at Epcot are two great places to go. Since the characters are all in one spot, it is not uncommon for the characters to be pulled aside to do a group meet and greet, which never happens normally. At the Hat, they will wait until the characters are coming off set and then do it at the Fountain near the Great Movie Ride where the characters enter and exit the set. At character Connection they will simply pull them to the center or somewhere. It's not a given, but it never hurts to try.

Also, please never stand in line with your button at a character meet and greet. I always hated it when I saw people doing that because you should not have to wait for anything. If we see that button, we will come and pull you out of the line which can be tricky at times. The best thing is to have the children wait to the side of the exit where they are visible and then send an adult to approach the attendant. They will let you in promptly.

I kinda disappeared for a couple days...took a much needed weekend trip to the Jersey shore with the fam. I'm back now and will update my PTR. Thanks for all the help with posting the link....I really hope I did it right!!!!

:cutie: Ok, while I'm here, I'll start asking questions.....

I heard that Universal is more adult oriented, so I was wondering if the kids would have any fun there. I'll reiterate, they are 8,7, and 4. Is it worth spending a day there?
I also heard you shouldn't do MK and Universal all in one trip. Because they are both similar, you should just pick one of the two..is this correct info?
Also, I understand we get spending money. How much do we get and is it enough??
We will be there for six days, but I believe we will only be able to use five of them for parks, because our flight won't arrive until noon.
Advice please!!!!!

I can't help you with the comparison of MK and universal...we did not do us/ioa. But, I can tell you, that the money you recieve will be enough to cover your expenses. The day your flight arrives, use it to take a look around GKTW.

Though US/IOA do have the bigger coasters & thrill rides ,they do have children areas also.IOA has the Suess Landing area with Suess themed rides & character meets with the Cat in the Hat & freinds .US has the Woody Woodpecker area .There's the ET ride that was so much fun( highly recommend ),a Curious George & Fieval playland .My wish child is a BIG Curious George fan so getting her to US was a priority! She was given her own private meet & greet with George ,the Man in the Yellow Hat ,Woody Woodpecker ,Scooby & Shaggy. That was Awesome !Even my older "kids "ages 13,22,&24 enjoyed these areas !Men in Black is similar to Buzz Lightyear (fun ride!) So there was something for everyone .
We too had a 6 day trip & got to enjoy everything we wanted to except for Sea World -oh well, next time !

I had an AP to Universal when I was a CP. There are some kid friendly options, and I doubt kids that young will notice the difference in atmosphere. It is probably the adults who notice it more, although I'm not entirely sure I would take my own kids there.

(On Shrek, one of their spiels is about keeping your "snot nosed little brats" quiet. I know it is in jest, but still not sure it's the type of atmosphere I want).

In my opinion, Universal Studios (US) is nothing like MK at all. It has some similarities to DHS, but there are definite differences even there. US has some great kid-oriented attractions:

E.T. is really for young kids. It is very visual.

Men in Black Alien attack might possibly scare a young child, but it did not scare Lysi (5) at all, but once was enough for her.

The Barney area is all about young kids.

The Curious George Playground is a water area for kids. Adjacent is the Woody Woodpecker roller coaster.

I thought Shrek was great for kids. The entry is animatronic. We had to explain to Lysi that the 3 Little Pigs were not really trapped in there.

I would stay away from Jaws, Earthquake and Twister as well as the monster shows and Mummy because they could cause fear issues, or nighmares. Mummy is the most intense special effects attraction in Orlando. These rides would be great for older kids, teens or adults, but not for young folks.

One thing about Universal is that the area is more "open" than the other theme parks. It is more like walking down the streets of a real town. The colors are mostly muted.

Islands of Adventure (IOA) is another story. IOA is ALL about kids. It has a "packed" feeling as the attractions are mostly very close together, except in the Lost World. The entry area (comparable to Main Street MK) is very visual with some really neat and exotic building. I wanted to stand and look at them for some time. On your left is the Cartoon-oriented area with comic strip graphics all over the place. The Spiderman Ride is there. The structure of it is like Winnie the Pooh, or the old Mr. Toad Ride, but there are 3-D effects (glasses) and villains coming at you suddenly. However, the graphics are all like a cartoon or comic, not at all realistic looking. The ride is a tad "jerky" at times, but not intense. Overall, I was not impressed compared to the other attractions, but someone who is really in comics would love it. The Spiderman greet across the street is neat. The picture they take comes out as a comic book cover with Spidey and your child or kids.

There are other super heroes around this area and the parade features them.

After that area, you get into Dudley Doo Right and Popeye, with water rides. The cartoon theme there is all about kids. Popeye's boat is a fun interactive area.

Lost World has Jurassic Park, with pretty nice animatronics. It is no where near as intense as Dinosaur at AK. It also has a walk through attraction with water and fire effects called Poseidon. It closes early so we missed it. The outside looked very impressive.

Finally, there is Seuss Landing, which is similar to Toon Town in DL. Everything is Dr. Seuss oriented, including the architecture. Young children will love this area.

IOA has 2 intense roller-coaster attractions, Hulk and Dueling Dragons.

Remember that Wish Trip Kids get a free photo with each character greet at US and IOA, as well as one general shot in the park of your group. You pick these up near the entrane to US before you leave. By the way, the ET character greet is with a manikin instead of a person in a costume. Others are, in US, Curious George and the Man in the Yellow Hat, Scooby and Shaggy, Sponge Bob and Patrick, Shrek and Donkey (WAY COOL!) and in IOA, the Super Heroes are all we saw.

Most Wish Trips allow for only 5 park days, though some folks fit a bit in on the day of departure. We thought about this as we had a day left at US/ IOA, but we were kind of tired. That is a lot of theme parking and village activities day after day. Most families struggle with the idea of having 6 days worth of tickets and 5 days to use them. Some picking and choosing is required. Have only a 3-Day park hopper for Disney helps limit this choice, but there is still a day at SW and 2 Days at US/ IOA. We opted for only one at US/ IOA and were able to do what we wanted to in that time.

We had plenty of spending money for souvenirs and meals. We paid for the Royal Table out of our own funds. With spending money we bought one meal at MK (Columbia Harbor), Epcot (Lotus Blossom), US (Mel's Drive In), AK (McDonalds-which is being phased out) and Sea World (Sea Fire). Since we skipped supper at DHS, we ordered pizza at GKTW when we got back. We had supper at the village on our AK and US days, which were on short autumn hours anyway. To make our souvenir budget stretch, we bought many things at Wal-Mart and the Flea Market across the highway, but we still had enough to buy a few things at MK, US/ IOA, SW and DHS (becuase it rained on us in the evening). I think it is important for kids to be able to get some things in the parks, but don't overdo that as things are cheaper at Wal-Mart and you will get some things at GKTW. My favorite things we bought in the park were Pirate Minnie Ears and a Pirate Minnie Doll, as well as THE medallion from the Pirates movies.

Because you won't be able to get your tickets until evening orientation at GKTW, that day is not an option for parks. On the last day it is kind of hard to pack up, check out and still have time to get in and out of a theme park, return your rental vehicle and make it to the airport screening in time (even if you don't get lost in the airport like we did).

For this reason, I think it is advisable to focus your Village activities on the first and last day (but don't miss Christmas, and, if your kids are really into princesses, pirates of crafts, the Pirates and Princesses Party). Use the other days to focus almost exclusively on the parks (unless rest breaks are essential). It takes some time to get from the village to the parks, so we rested IN the parks in shady, quiet areas or in the Wish Lounge, or, my favorite, on the boat ride from Epcot to DHS.

Bill

Thanks to all for all the great advice!!:cutie:

Bill, can you tell me how you spent your days while at GKTW? I read your TR, but refresh my memory please!:goodvibes

I think we will be able to use our last day at a park, because our flight is not scheduled to leave until 7pm. What do you think about that? Or is it too much running around for one day??

Also, the kids wanted to do a character meal....am I going to need to make ADR or will we be able to just walk-in? I'm still not sure which days we are going to each park, so this makes it hard to make reservations. Did you have everything planned out before you arrived, or did you just wing it?

Thanks!! You guys are great!
