Wish Trippers...Unite!! Volume One

All of your park passes are given to by GKTW. If you want to exchange your
US or Seaworld passes you may be able to do so just ask after orientation. I'm sure they will be overly accommodating

Bill, can you explain extra magic hours to me? I realize that certain parks stay open longer but how does it work? Does it change all the time or is it a set day of the week.I would love to come up with a flexible plan on what parks to do what days and would love to take advantage of this. Also are there fireworks every night or does it vary? Are they all at MK?

OOO... OOO.. .OOO.. I almost forgot to remember not to forget to remember to tell y'all this.

If you go to the Disney Web Site, you can request trip planning information and get a really cool DVD about WDW and DL as well as some beautiful maps of each park. They are a big part of keeping our memory fresh. Plus, I have some awesome videos on WDW and SW from the Travel Channel.

As far as Extra Magic Hours are concerned (I learned this from excessive study of Birnbaums and Fodor before our trip) here is the link for the park schedules showing which park has early or late EMH each day.
http://www.wdwinfo.com/wdwinfo/hours.htm
I love WDWINFO. It also shows you the hours for each park and information about fireworks and parades. Can you believe that we did not take in one parade?

If you are staying at a Disney Resort you can get in EMH at the designated park that day. These are the only folks who get in then so the crowds are way down. We tried to get special permission for this for our Wish Trip even though staying at GKTW, but gave up when we realized that we would need too much sleep to take it in. There was also a special time for little ones at Fantasyland only that we were interested in but chose sleep instead.

Even if you are staying at a Disney Hotel, it is recommended that you stay in the EMH park only for EMH that day then park hop to another park. This is because most Disney Hotel guests go to that park that day, making the place very crowded outside of the EMH. This could all change if so many people follow Birnbaum that none of the Disney Guests end up staying there, but that is not likely to happen.

If you are a non-Disney hotel guest, it is recommended that you visit parks that do NOT have EMH on a given day, to mimimize crowds. It also makes quite a difference which park you are in on a given day of the week for crowd trends. Epcot is good on weekends (we found this to be true).

One big consideration for us was that MK and Disney Studios stayed open later only on certain days. We went for those times in our trip planning. We ended up with two really nice long days (even in late September hours). One was at MK. The other began at Epcot and ended at Disney Studios. The hours were the same every day at AK and were about the same every day at Epcot, Universal and Sea World.

For that reason, I recommend scheduling your days around MK. Figure out your MK day first, then fit the others in around it. I would not recommend Thursdays at MK if you are staying at GKTW because you really should take in the Christmas Party there. We also enjoyed the GKTW Pirates and Princesses Pary with Shamu (who can really cut a rug).

You can find out almost anything you want to know between these boards and wdwinfo.com. Then of course, you can ask your Wish Trip coordinator or call Disney Guest Services. It is pretty hard for GKTW to field a lot of questions themselves because every day, they have a crowd of new families to welcome and others to send off.:goodvibes

Just got a call from MAW telling us that we have our airlines all set. We ended up with a flight that was not at our local airport so she told us that our transportation to and from the airport are taken care of. We have to stop once to take a connecting flight which I am hoping will work well. It is also on a airlines that doesn't have reserved seating so I am hoping that we can get on early to have our family sit together. Our flight to there will arrive at 8pm so I guess we will have to wait for a morning orientation? I really wanted to go to the magic kingdom that day so I hope the orientation is early enough to get our tickets. We are also doing the mickey halloween so it will be open later that day so I am happy about that. The day we come home is a 9am flight which means we are not able to do anything that day. My mother is joining us so that is why we got our flight plan so she can reserve and find out about pricing. They said it was ok for her to stay with us at GKTW so we are happy that she doesn't have to stay offsite at a hotel.

Seems like things are already coming together! So close but so far.

Has anyone received a CD from the "song of love"? I found it on the web site for GKTW. My ds song is on its way this week in the mail so we are looking forward to it! It is so great that they make the special CD's!!

Good time to start a pre trip report in July or August for a end of September wish trip??

Bill_Lin....how was the crowds when you went? Everyone is saying that September is pretty empty and lucky that we are going right after the free dinner plan.

Now would be a great time to start your Pre-Trip Report. The questions you are asking now would be helpful for folks to read in considering their own trip. The decision making, arrangement juggling and such is what makes a good trip report. It is also nice to learn a little history about the child and family to put the Wish Trip in perspective. We all love photos to put a face to the name.

As far as September crowds, we did not experience and issue with this at any park, but we carefully planned which days to be at which park. Our GAC made lines irrelevant anyway.

One thing that made MK really uncrowded for us was a strong tropical storm the edge of which brushed over Orlando the night before and into early morning. It was really WET on the drive, ferry ride and until 10:00 a.m. That kept a lot of locals home I am sure. It all cleared up after that, but I suppose people did not want to come to the park for half a day.

We (well.. to confess... actually I) had worried that free dining would cause the parks to be swamped. That was not the case. Of course "crowded" can mean different things to different folks. My context includes having been at Disneyland on New Years Eve (which used to have no limit to how many guests they would let in) and the Day after.

Keep on Postin'

Bill;)

Ok, I hate to ask this because greed just made me ask this question and I should be happy for EVERYTHING that we are having for this trip. I see that a lot of people have a full 7 days for their trips. We have 6 days and one day is full flying till late night and the last 6th day is a early morning flight. I wonder if my chapter doesnt give full 7 days for a trip? I am happy with one day but fill like we will have to rush.

That isn't greed:rotfl: Just point it out to your wish team. I'm sure its no problem to change it!:yay:

I am not too sure that they will exchange. You get 3 days WDW, 1 day SW and 2 days US/IOA (i think  ). I know the 3 day WDW is a park hopper and for ONLY 3 days...you cannot upgrade it or add days too it. It is a ticket given to GKTW by Disney and that is it.....if you need more days...even just one...you will have to get seperate tickets. If you plan on going again in the future, buy a multiple day non expiring ticket. When DH and I went in '05 we bought a 10 day non expiring park hopper. We used 6 days then, used 2 days on DD's MAW trip and have 2 days left for future use! :hyper:

MAW trips are usually 7 days...two days travel, five days to play....at least that is what I have seen/read about so far. I know, it doesn't make sense that they give you all those tickets with so few days to use them in!!! What are your dates again?

 aaawwwww.....she's a cutie! I could see her dressed up in a princess dress meeting princesses!!!!!!! :goodvibes Congrats on the adoption! I see you have a few more days until the official adoption process begins. How is alize doing? Does he like having Ciara around??? You are an amazing lady and have an amazing family...did you know that?!?!??!!? :goodvibes

I love the picture. She is such a sweetie. You might need to reduce the size of your pics via photo bucket, though. This from someone who has gotten in trouble out of ignorance... let me see... how many times.... what was the question?

Nicole, GKTW trips are typically 1 day to travel, 5 park days, and 1 day to travel back. Other non-GKTW trips seem to vary more in length. Didn't you say that you have a 3-day hopper and SW without any Universal Tickets? I am confused about that.

If you go to GKTW and you want to do more of something than provided, sometimes they have extra tickets left by families who don't want to use them. That is pretty rare though. My philosophy is, it doesn't hurt to ask. It is amazing how many yes answers you get.

By the way, you are NOT greedy.

Thanks Bill,
I appreciate the advice. I know that if we need to we can skip MK because Disneyland is only 20 minutes from our home and we have been there quite frequently. I guess I just love the MK magic so I hoped we could fit it all in. I also have to take into consideration the heat and the fact that my son will only be month out of treatment. We will have to be cautious he doesn't wear out.
I will probably purchase an extra set of park hopper passes for the boys for day 4 as they are 14 and can do one of the parks on their own. We made the decision to pay for 2 days at the Animal Kingdom Lodge ourselves so my son could have the true Disney experience. I know that way the transportation will be so easy for them and that they can easily do Animal Kingdom or MGM on their own. It will be a nice day for my hubby and I to sit by the pool!!
Thanks for advice,:yay:

Our trip date is from Sep 22-27. So on the 22nd we will get to Orlando at 8pm so that day is shot. On the 27th we go home on the plane at 9am so I am guessing to be at the airport around 7am or so and that day is gone. We are staying at the GKTW so I guess that we are getting the disney, sea world and universal tickets. The 4 days work for 3 days at disney and 1 at sea world. Just would have really like to check out universal for one day but dont have the extra day since they gave us a 6 day wish trip. We went to universal with the kids in hollywood around a year or so ago and they were pretty frightened by it so I am not sure even if we had a extra day to go to Universal if they would like it if it is the same in Florida. I will probably call and see what they say about the extra day. I really hate calling and making the MAW team feel like I am pushing something that I should be grateful for and just spending the time with our family and not pushing more on the vacation. Thank you all for letting me vent a little,....dh is probably tired of listening to me

Nicole, I would ask about the extending your trip right away, if you have not, because air reservations are hard to change.

Universal is not the same at Orlando. They have the Islands of Adventure Park which is really catered to kids. Lysi loved the cartoon-themed area, where the buildings are decorated with cartoon images. She loved Popeye's boat and meeting Spiderman. Her favorite part there was the Dr. Seuss-themed area. It reminded me some of ToonTown at DL. There is no ToonTown at MK only a small ToonTown Fair area that is much smaller than DL and there is no Roger Rabbit Ride.

If I had to choose between Sea World and Islands of Adventure, I would ask how interested the kids are in the Sea and Marine life. There is a nice Sea exhibit at Epcot with Dolphins, but no shows. Sea World does have a nice kids area, with some smaller rides and a play ground. Do you think they would enjoy the Shamu and Dolphin shows, or feeding dolphins (you stand next to their pool and feed them over the wall. You can reach out and touch them if you are quick).

Before deciding between I.O.A. and SW, I would check out both their websites thoroughly.

MK really is much like DL. I like DL better than MK. It is a little larger and has Indiana Jones and the Temple of the Forbidden Eye, which is not at MK. Disney Studios has the Indiana Jones stunt show and Star Tours which is the same as DL.

My daughter had her wish trip 3/9-3/14.I also felt a little disappointed with a 6 day trip.I did ask if we could extend the trip on my dime but flights were already booked & could not be changed. We did have a departure flight at 7:45 PM ,so that gave us an afternoon at IOA.I did have a touring plan and prioritized rides ,shows ,parades ,& fireworks. But one of our biggest mistakes was not being able to get to ANY of the parks before noon (too exausted in the morning!).But we had such a fantastic time & to see so much happiness in my daughters face-priceless!But none of this would have been possible without the wonderful people at Make A Wish !

Here is a list of my favorite rides, shows, character greets, dining locations and shopping.

Islands of Adventure- We did not eat here

Sea World- Sea Fire Inn

GKTW- Stawberry Waffles for Breakfast, pizza by the pool, and Ice Cream for a bed-time snack

Shopping:
Wal-Mart is only a 2 minute drive north from GKTW. They have an entire section for WDW souvenirs, shirts, stuffed animals, cups, you name it. The prices are WAY lower than in the parks. Still there is something to be said for a kid picking up a souvenir AT each park. I would not buy things to take home to friends and family there or things for yourself, as WM is so much cheaper.

The Flea Market- East on the highway from Wal-Mart 1/4 mile or so and on the north side of the highway. It has lots of theme park souvenirs for a very low price. You may end up with things that are marked Disney Florida instead of WDW.

The Airport- Seriously, there are some great theme parks stores at the Orlando airport to pick up last minute (or first minute) things.

The Pirate-themed store outside Pirates of the Caribbean at MK.

The African clothing stores in AK

The Star Wars store outside Star Tours in Disney Studios

The store at Men in Black in Universal

The store at the waterfront in Sea World.

The kiosks at I.O.A.

The on-line store at GKTW, ask at the house of hearts for a discount code.

And now.... drum roll...... my top favorites over all!

Rides for young kids:
E.T., Splash Mountain, Cat in the Hat

Rides for teens:
Everest, Tower of Terror, Test Track

Shows for young kids:
Beaut and the Beast, Turtle Talk and Monster's Inc.

Shows for teens:
Lights, Motors, Action and Indiana Jones

Character Greets for young kids: The Princesses for girls, Spiderman for boys and all of the characters who visit GKTW (there is something special about having the characters come to visit you, as a kid, on your turf instead of the other way around

Character Greets for teens: Captain Jack Sparrow

Dining: The Castle for girls and Mel's Drive In for boys

Shopping: Wal-Mart

Any one else care to make recommendations?

Here are some threads I discovered today. They might be interesting. Above all, check out the Disney Web Site links at the bottom the get (for free from Disney) a really cool DVD about WDW, and some awesome maps. Two more reasons to love Disney. We used both to plan for and get excited about the trip. Now we use the DVD to help reminisce about our trip.

For those kids who might be afraid on dark rides, it is a good idea to have something that glows or emits a faint light as a reference point. The darkness alone can be scary, even without the stuff that is supposed to scare you.

We purchased glow-in-the-dark things that you can use as necklaces or bracelets. It was very easy for us to find them because the stores were staring to stock Halloween stuff in early September.

We used them in Voyage of the Little Mermaid (DisStudios), [/URL]Dinosaur (AK) and Haunted Mansion (AK). We also bought little pen lights. I am not sure how these would go over with the CMs running the ride. They would not want anyone shining flashlights around during the rides. I guess it would depend on whether the child was sitting by you to be monitored and if they are the compliant sort who will try to stay out of trouble at all costs, or the type that like to test boundaries.

Maybe a little toy that had a glowing light inside it might make a nice companion.

Where we found grumpy people on our trip:

GKTW- :cloud9:No one was grumpy here. We are west coast folks. At times we noticed a significant difference in the attitudes and relationship styles of those from the west or south and folks from the northeast, who tended to be a bit gruffer. Once we adjusted to these cultural differences, they added to our fun.

MK- ::MickeyMoNO ONE was grumpy here, not even the guests. One CM at Haunted Mansion did scare the bleep out of me though. With the GKTW button we went in through a back entrance to get to the elevator. It was a neat hall in the "servants' quarters" that had the old-fashioned bell pull bells on the wall for each of the main characters in the story (ie Master Gracey). The CMs there were dressed as maids. There was a hidden door to what must be a staff room of some kind. I was standing right next to it, when it opened and a maid stepped out. I think she was just going off shift, but she definitely gave me a start when the invisible door opened.

At MK all the CMs smiled.

AK- :simba:The poor guy who had to restock napkins and condiments at McDonalds kind of snapped at my wife when she asked for napkins (which were out). "I am only one person he snapped...." My wife pointed to her Make a Wish Button and he blushed and apologized. Everyone else was great. The CMs in Festival of the Lion King bent over backwards, some of them literally, to make our Wish Girl feel special.

Disney Studios-:wizard: All were friendly, even in the rain. The CMs who were doing usher duty at Fantasmic had to be pretty assertive to steer people through and make them put their umbrellas down (so folks could see the show), but they were professional in attitude, firm but polite.

Epcot- :3dglassesWe got a couple of bum steers about how to get past Test Track to Mexico, but no one was rude about it. One kind of funny (in hindsight) thing happened at Ellen's Energy Adventure (very underrated ride). I guess they have more than one audience moving through the ride at a time. Someone in another audience ahead of us, bailed on the ride. They had to shut it down for safety reasons. This stopped the ride of all groups. The one ahead of us was evacuated. My DW and DS were waiting outside the ride for us when the evacuation occurred. They did not see us. The CM at the exit told them that there had been and "incident" on the ride and the "everyone" had already been evacuated. This was not true, as our audience was still on the ride. My DW feared that our Princess or I had been hurt or something like that. We came out all smiles to find my DW quite shaken and upset. OOPS!

Universal Studios- :cool2: The only grumpy people (other than me) that we ran into were the photography lady at E.T. who was a tad snappish and a lady loading the ride at Men in Black. The guy who was manning the entrance was great. He joked with us and was very friendly. He sent us in through the exit on our own. Apparently this was a big "no no." When we were about to board, the lady told us, in a very firm and stern tone, "You can't come in like that without a team member! You need to tell them to come back with you." I believe she was chewing out the wrong person. She let us on the ride anyway. When we left the ride, we informed the guy at the entrance about what had happened.

Islands of Adventure- :sail: DS and I wanted to go on Dudley Doo Right Ripsaw Falls. Lysi was had gotten too wet, scared and tired to try it. At the entrance we all spoke to the Team Member (they are TMs there instead of CMs) and explained. After seeing our GAP (like a GAC at Disney) he sent DS and I in through the exit line. DW and DD took the GAP to go elsewhere. When we got to the boarding area, an older man told us we could not get on. Our Make a Wish buttons did not impress him. After learning about how much counterfeiting there is of these, I understand better now. He sent us back out the exit and was quite sharp with us, saying "How do I know you are not lieing to me." We told the TM there what had happened. He called a supervisor (Mountie) who, in character, came and apologized to us very courteously. He explained that the TM was new to rides and did not understand about Universal's policy of red carpet treatment of Wish Families. He escorted us onto the ride. He was great.

Sea World- :fish: Folks were very accomodating to us. Some were very friendly and happy. Others looked like they were not too thrilled with their jobs. No one was rude.

My conclusions about this are:

It is AMAZING how well Disney trains their staff to be cheerful, smiling and polite. Everyone understood about Wish Kids and how to treat them. Now, honestly, even in the Magic Kingdom, there is no way that everyone is going to be in a good mood, day after day after day. Even WDW would get old after daily exposure for months and years. CMs must have issues with family, health, finances and whatever, just like anyone else. Yet, somehow, they are successful in ACTING happy to be there. This is why they all deserve to be called CAST MEMBERS. Way to Go Disney!

Even though we ran into some negative attitudes in other parks, they were:
Rare
Definitely the exception
Made up for by others aware of the situation

If we went anywhere else involving crowds, a mall, a sporting event, a concert, a movie, we would see a LOT more rudeness. For this reason, I give Orlando a big high five for courtesy to park guests.

Everywhere we met, we were pleased with the special Wish Trip treatment we received. Thank you to everyone from donors, to wish co-ordinators, to GKTW volunteers, to theme park staff, to airlines for the wonderful time we had.

Bill:thumbsup2
