Wish it was easier to find hotel rooms for big families! (OR/WA coastal areas)

Thank you so much for all the hotel suggestions! I do appreciate it. I'm not certain of our exact route yet, but I will be looking into those. I do know we are hitting Coos Bay, Florence, Tillamook, Depoe Bay, Cannon Beach, Seaside, Portland, La Push, Hoh Rain Forest, Neah Bay, Port Angeles, Port Townsend, San Juan Island, Seattle, etc. Not spending the night at each and every place of course, but at least stopping to sight see.

I'm from Oregon, and it really is beautiful. Be prepared for rain, though!
I want rain!! We live in Las Vegas and average about 4 inches of rainfall per year. Just enough to make the dust on our cars all spotty. ;)
I was actually not sure I wanted to take this trip in June because I was worried there wouldn't be enough rain at that time. So, I am hoping we get a few good showers.

My husband and I went to WA for the first time earlier this month and had a nice mix of sun and rain. It was perfect. The rain brought big waves onto the beach in La Push, WA and it was quite a sight to see. I'm looking forward to seeing the Oregon coastline now.

The looking glass inn in Lincoln City offers two bedroom suites. Ours had two kings, and a fold out queen along with the option of a roll away. Breakfast is also included. Mo's is across the street and the tiki hut is within walking distance. Not sure if that area is one of your destinations but it always works great when we go as a larger group.
Thanks! I'll have to check our route. I appreciate the info though. Always nice to hear things from someone who's stayed there.

Have you tried KOA?
No, I haven't. I guess I thought they were just for motor homes. Thanks for the tip!! I will definitely check that out now.

I will also use priceline and book two rooms then call hotel and see if can get connecting rooms.
We've used Priceline before. It's worked a few times for us. I always keep that in the back of my mind. I just hate that you can't cancel. But, it's something to consider.

You can rent motor homes if that would be of interest to you.
I actually did look into that. I thought it would be fun, but it was pretty pricey to rent. And, then with the cost of gas and trying to maneuver them around Seattle and Portland, we decided against it. I'd still like to rent one some day, but maybe on a less adventurous trip. One where we can drive to a destination, like the beach, park it and just stay put.

On another note your talking about the trip makes me want to do it all over again. I love the PNW and miss living out there.

Have a super trip!
Thanks! We fell in love with the PNW!! Very hard to come back to the desert after being there.

Just seconding the use of http://sixsuitcasetravel.com/

It's a site specifically devoted to finding hotel rooms for larger families.
It is a great site. So glad I found it.

Your older kids won't be traveling with you forever, either, it is a short term problem, if that helps.
I know. Kind of sad! I'm looking forward to this time together, cramped as it may or may not be. lol

One question for you - can you take me with you???? I love all the Oregon cities you mentioned and miss that area every day. We've been stuck on the east coast for 6 years now and are so ready to get back.

Aww. Sure, why not! Hmmm....hotel room for 7? I love a challenge. ;)

Also, take a look at www.redweek.com for timeshare rentals. The prices are hard to beat.

Thanks for the link!

I live in the PNW and end up at the coast for vacationing a lot. There are not a ton of great hotel options at the beach, so what a lot of people do over here when staying at the beach is rent a house. You can check on vrbo.com or homeaway.com. Also, I would check the Portland craigslist.com for vacation rentals, as most of the people who own Oregon coast vacation properties live or advertise them in Portland. Another option is to check renting a room at one of the WorldMark properties. It is a timeshare, so you would have to rent it directly from the owner rather than the company (so look on craigslist), but they have rooms that sleep 8 and a few very nice properties along the Washington and Oregon coasts, with Seaside being very large and lots of opportunites for renting. Good luck! It is beautiful here! I hope you have a lovely trip. :goodvibes

Oh, and the beach rentals book FAST, so book for the summer now. Good luck!

I feel your frustration too! It always takes me hours to hunt down a hotel room for the 6 of us. We've started renting points for my FIL's condo (Worldmark) and it's helped out. But now we have to plan our vacation around openings, or book 13 months out.

I haven't stayed in any of these hotels, but these are the ones I looked into last year when we went to Oregon. You can check Tripadvisor for reviews, I just know they can accommodate 6 people. Another trick for looking for rooms is to use Expedia. It's pretty good at showing which hotels will allow 6 to a room, if you enter all of your guests in the search. I've also called some hotels that show enough bedding, but list they are for smaller parties, and I've had pretty good luck with them allowing 6.

Here's some for Oregon:

Rivertide Suites (Seaside)
Inn at Wecoma (Lincoln City)
The Ashley Inn (Tillamook - but they have several locations, I'm not sure about the other one)
Shilo Inn (Florence)
BW Plus Landmark Inn (Lincoln City)

Choice hotels is my go-to. Many places have comfort suites, they sleep six. So does Cambria, and occassionally quality.

Hi Beth,

Are you going at the beginning of June or the end? You will find a lot more options at the beginning including houses for a few nights at a time. A lot of our schools out here are in session until the 3rd week in June. I may be able to help you out with a booking 1 or 2 bedroom places through Worldmark, if you want to go that route. Just need to check availability.

Tracey

If you take me with you, I'll sleep in the car :lmao: I can be your personal tour guide.
Well, a guide would be nice, but the car might already be taken. I have a feeling it will be a lot quieter than the hotel room and I might just decide to spend the night in there. lol

Thanks for all the info. I am glad I'm starting early. I think we'll have a better selection this way.

No joke, right?? Hours, days, weeks, even. It takes forever to find a hotel, then see if it will work for our family size and budget, then, I don't know about you, but I have to check reviews on it. So, sometimes, I'll think I found the perfect place, only to read horrible reviews, and have to start all over. I am not picky either. Some people complain in their reviews about low water pressure or scratchy toilet paper. LOL I could not care less about that. I look for bad neighborhoods, or unclean conditions or bugs.
It's not an easy process and my husband doesn't understand why it takes so long!! But, in the end, he always appreciates the work that went into it.

Thanks for all those places! I will make note of them!

There are ginger bread pancakes that are served here:

A bit of a splurge but tasty if you like a nice breakfast. This is 8-10 miles south of Newport.
Oh, my. That sounds good right now! (Late NYE night, still haven't eaten yet today, lol)

Hey Tracey!
We are hoping to leave soon after Adam's graduation, so around June 15. I would love to leave earlier as our school gets out June 5, but his ceremony isn't until June 12 or 13, I forget... So, we have to stick around for that. Not sure why they have the graduation so far after the school year ends.

I am going to finish working on our route, marking all the stops we want to make sure to see, and then I'll get back to you. Thanks!!

LOL! When you hit the coast, make sure you eat at Mo's. It's famous for their clam chowder. There are a few Mo's on the coast including Newport (original one) and Cannon Beach. http://www.moschowder.com/
