A number of people here have mentioned that they use a wireless router in the villas. What type of router do you use? I would like to have one handy.
Thanks!

Someone recommended D-Link DWL-G730AP Wireless Pocket Router/AP w/ which is about 52.00 through Amazon.com. It is small and comes with a travel case. I am thinking about ordering it myself.

I use the Linksys WTR54GS, its dependable, compact and portable. The power plug is even integrated in the unit to save space. I believe thats it being discontunued however. Here are some alternatives from a different post.

When I did my LIVE feeds for Kidani Village/Jambo House from Easter Sunday April 04-09, 2010 at

I brought my 4+ years old Westell VersaLink Model 327W (Verzion wired/wireless modem router).

Since I have WPA security and MAC setup at home, I needed to change to WEP security at Kidani Village.

Since my network password is more than 12 characters at home, I needed to change to Kidani Village max 12 characters.

All of the above changes without the assistance of Disney Internet Access Guest Support team (dial '56' on the room phone).

DW was on wireless Acer 10" Netbook while I was doing my LIVE feeds with Dell 15.4" (wired and wireless).

We had two iPhone 3G for Wi-Fi access in our 1-bedroom. Any other location/times were 3G network all the time with two external/optional lithium polymer batteries (brand = dexim bluepack S5).

Since my home specific network name (something meaningful) THE SAME at Kidani Village, I did the following to two iPhone 3G:

under Settings > Wi-Fi > I tapped the right arrow key of my home specific network name > Forget this Network (I needed to do this because the setup of WPA at home and WEP at Kidani Village)

Then again under Settings > Wi-Fi > I re-connected the same specific home network name with the new network password for Kidani Village

At this point, I'd probably get an 'N' router instead of 'G'. The range is better and it should be faster (of course that depends on the device using it, but more and more laptops are 'N' compatible now and I even see some of the new BlackBerry's can use 'N'.)

I picked up a refurbished Linksys 'N' router (WRT160N) at TigerDirect a few months back for something like $25 and its been great. Its in the basement and I have no problem picking up the signal anywhere within the house, including the upstairs bedrooms.

I have the D-link pocket router which is fine. Note, in most, cases, you can just bring the one you have at home.

Will my Netgear wireless router that I purchased from TimeWarner work?

I brought my Linksys from home. Being that it's already setup for my laptop, all I really had to do was plug in the cable.

I'm using this right now at the BWV. It was pretty much "plug 'n play". I like it because it is very small & the small travel case also has space for the cable and charger.

My router at home is bigger and less portable and I really do not want to disconnect everything and then re-connect it when I get back home. Well worth the $50 I paid for it. :)

On the same subject. Anyone using an Apple Airport express? I was thinking of buying one for that purpose (to go with a new IPad:cool1:). It is more expensive but I really like their very compact design with the power supply in the same casing as the router.

We use the Airport Express. It works great with very little setup (at least that is what DH tells me)

We have an older linksys wireless we keep in our owners locker. This is an older router, so is much slower than what I have at home. Most any router should work. I would recommend setting the security so anyone would need a password to log into the router.

Ok Tech challenged question:goodvibes

We have a 3G and a Touch. Do I have to take the laptop or can we just plug the router in and get a wifi signal? Where/what do you plug it into?:teacher:

^They should work fine with your wireless router assuming you have them set up with the applicable password to your router. There is an ethernet hook-up in the wall in the rooms that you plug into and even if you forget to bring your ethernet cord, there is one in the room in the closet. Note, even at home the computer really has nothing to do with your 3G and Itouch getting wireless. You just need the computer to set up initial access to the router and a password.

I use an old netgear 'b' router when we go, but, I usually go hardwire so I can do my live feed (it will be up May 9th for two weeks...yes I'll post a link).

I hadn't thought about just picking up a cheap referb 'n' for travel. I think I'll start looking.

We adore the airport express and use it at home to extend our network and to stream itunes to an upstairs speaker. Works great.

Thank you! So if I purchase a new router for our trip next month, will it be easy to set up at the resort or should I set it up at home with my computer?
My goal is to not take the laptop with us and my DS needs Wi-Fi for his I-Touch.

Thank you again!

We use a cheap belkin G router. As said by a PP the G is somewhat dated but for our purposes it works well and I can leave in our owners locker without feeling guilty for leaving an expensive router.

Set it up at home first with your computer and make sure it is working with the things you plan to use at the resort.

I would suggest you set it up at home and have everything ready to connect. Then when at WDW you plug into the Ethernet, turn on router and you can start doing your thing. I think it would be less stress on vacation on trying to get it to work.
