I am looking for information on wireless routers. I need one that works for almost 1/4 mile. Do they make one? If I can find one I can get rid of our land line with internet.

Famiy lives down the driveway and we could bum off of theirs for what we would neet at night at home. Otherwise we have iphones during the day.

Thanks for the help.

No real option for that distance without some repeaters and/or high gain antennes (spelling?) It can be done though.

You can also look into some cell carriers like Verizon and see about their mifi that would allow you to create hotspots and set up a network.

Not real budget friendly though.

You could get a pretty cheap plan for a high gain antenna off of "instructables.com". God I love that site! Total McGyver stuff.
I would look into the plans for a WOK-FI homemade antenna from a wok or an old satellite dish, or a Cantenna both of which should work fine that distance.

Another buzzword to search is "wardriving" which is when you search for an open network in your car, often with a pringle can antenna. They are all about getting the best signal from your neighbors, so there will be a lot of info about the best routers, tricks etc. to getting the most bars. The first and easiest way to increase your range may be to put your router as high as possible, in the attic if possible.
I just bought a Verizon 7501 router on the Verizon website for $10, which has a reputation for a crazy good signal for the price, and suddenly noticed I could pick up 3 times as many networks in my neighborhood. It works for anyone not just verizon.

Looks like if you are willing to do some McGyver work, you should be able to share that connection and drop the landline!

Thanks for posting this thread, I too, am looking into this myself. I'm interested to see what others have learned and done. :thumbsup2

The first thing to look at is the wireless standard on your cards and you router-if your cards are 802.11g and your router is as well-your just not going to get that distance from a router without one of the solutions that others have suggested-and when you get that distance on your signal you want to have a very good firewall on both your computer and your router because without good security the whole neighborhood is going to be using your router-and you would be amazed what i can find out about you if i jump on your router.
If you computer has a 802.11n card and you use an n band router you might get that kind of reach-i know i can take my laptop down to the pool here-and have a good strong signal.
I can not believe someone is advocating war driving-with all the concerns about security you are actually advocating connecting over someone elses network? thats a risk for you and the person whos network you are using

Not advocating wardriving, just their methods to eek out every last foot of range, to extend the network. In network security its best to know your enemy. You could pay a few hundred bucks to have an IT person to set this up for you, but they will use the same technology as the guy in his car, just the parts will be more expensive.

except that the IT guy is likely to know a couple of tricks the guy in his car cant get past even if he knows what they are.
