We are staying at WLV gift from stepmoms brother. I want to bring my laptop. How does wireless work.. I thought I read it was free if not how does it work..Thanks

You will find an ethernet cable in the closet (if not call). You have to hook up with it. (I just got a new mini/netbook to take with us. My laptop is just too big to travel with. The mini is nice.)

There is no wireless, only wired connections.

It's wired, not wireless and it's free for members staying on points. As a guest of a member, you may or may not get charged for it. Internet is around $10 per 24 hours. Even members have to click on the "accept charge" when starting it up, but then don't get charged.

Hope that made sense :goodvibes

so it is wired but it is still broadband. Dad just has to check his email when we are there.

Yes it's a high speed connection. You will need a Ethernet connection on your computer. Some Members bring a longer cord or their own travel router to make their own WiFi.

Nope it's not broadband. Last I checked it looked to be about a T1.

The service is not provided by Disney. There is a local ISP who provides the connectivity and they charge back to the resort somehow which then shows up on your bill. If you are a DVC member the charges are waved. (I suspect DVD negotiated a better bulk rate for us.)

You should have enough bandwidth "to check e-mail."

I tried to sync about 10GBs of photos back to my house, and I got it done, but it took a while (I was using rsync though a ssh tunnel, so it could restart without an issue.)

I have 20 Mbit/s to/from my house, when I looked at tcptraceroute, it looked like the uplink from the resort was the slow link. (I saved the diagnostics I did somewhere, if I could find them I would post them.)

johno, speak English, please. ;)

Broadband has now been defined as 768 kbps by the govt for the stimulus program. Since a T1 provides twice the speed it technically can provide broadband service - always has. ;) I'm actually surprised that the speed was that great - I would have suspected it is shared and would be much slower on average. I think Disney expects most guests to just want to check email and not require more.

But, it's more than enough to handle email OP.

It seems the FCC has different rules than the International Telecom Union, which says it has to be faster than PRI (A T1 with ISDN signaling on it.)

I guess being out of the ISP business for the last few years I missed that one.

And yes the uplink is shared, they always are, and over subscribed. Just don't expect FIOS or even Comcast speed out of you connection.
