Are there any Winnipegers who have driven to Minneapolis and flown from there? If so, do you know of any hotels that would let you park long term in their lot while on your trip?

My sister fly's out of Minn every time she goes to MCO. However she doesnt drive, aparently NWA has a connector that goes from Wnpg to Minn. She got a excellent deal on expedia.com.

I am wondering the same thing...we usually just connect out of there, but this time we are driving there to fly..much better deal!!

How much of better deal can it be? The cost of driving there, hotel, parking and then losing a day there and back? I was looking at doing it, but waaay too much of a hassle for me.

Yeah...sounds way too time consuming and bothersome for me. We paid $400 with all the taxes/fees. Total for 3 people $1200. That is Winnipeg to Minneapolis to Orlando. Driving there and back would cost us plus hotel and food.
How much is the far from Minneapolis to Orlando? How many people are going?

We stayed at the Country Inn Suites Bloomington West when we flew out of Minneapolis to Denver last summer. It is close to the airport and the Mall of America (and Ikea, if you like that :) ). They let you park in their extended parking for up to 8 days as long as you stay there one night. They have a shuttle that runs to the airport which was quick and efficient both for getting us there and picking us up on our return.

Thanks for the replies. I know that at $400 out of Winnipeg, you're not saving much by flying out of Minneapolis, but you can't ALWAYS find those deals for the exact times we may want to go. We are supposed to be taking a year off of Disney this year, but if we can find a FANTASTIC deal out of Minneapolis and happen to luck in on the 40% off PIN code, YOU NEVER KNOW! A cheapy WDW trip may be in the cards for this summer yet.

Um, I really beg to differ here. We always fly out of MSP. We get flights from there for $168, $176, $200 return ALL the time (other than Christmas). It saves us a family of 5 a ton of money. It's only a 7 hour drive and we Park 'n' Fly at the Crowne Plaza for unlimited stay of $99. The kids love the 7 hour drive and enjoy the pace and crossing the border at our own pace coming home is easier overall. We do a quick stop at the Albertville Factory Outlet as well. We tried once out of Winnipeg and it was a $400 hit and a delay whereby we had to overnight in MSP anyway and lost our points on the first night of our stay. We figured it was just fate saying continue to fly out of MSP which we do LOVe! It takes us just over a tank of gas to get there, so we go thru 2.5 tanks of gas. We still save WAY more money going that route.

Hello ~ Sorry, I don't have any advise....but I just wanted to say;

I LOVE WINNIPEG!

I lived there for a couple of years in the 80's.

It's a great city!

Blessings, Sandra

Hi there. We haven't driven from Winnipeg, but we've driven from NW Ontario so it's basically the same distance to Minneapolis. We went at Christmas time (so peak season!) and honestly, we saved about $2000 on the flights flying from MSP than if we flew from home. A day's drive and we do the Park and Fly at the Days Inn across from Mall of America. It's great. A day to shop and do whatever then hit the airport. Saves so much money.

Have fun!

Well for our upcomming trip, the msp to mco was $200 per person. From Wpg to mco was just over $600. The choice was simple. We don't mind road trips, and even factoring gas hotel etc, it still was enough of a savings to do it. (plus it is like a vaction before and after the vacation!! lol) My BIL and his family will also be driving to msp to fly as well. I guess it just really depends on when you are going for the flight prices....as usual....lol

HI TIFF! haha too funny that you're on here too...

yeah, we're driving Winnipeg-Minneapolis in 12 days, and flying from there to Florida. We're leaving the car at the airport this time, because we're actually doing Wpg-Fargo on Wednesday evening, and then Fargo-Minneapolis the next day & flying out in the evening (late arrival). I did the same thing back in May, for May long weekend, with some of my girlfriends. The money we saved on the flight made it affordable for us to go down there just for the weekend (drove down Friday night, flew out Saturday morning, stayed in Disney Saturday & Sunday, flew back to Minneapolis Monday morning & drove straight home...). We saved around $1000 on flight for myself, DH, our 5 yr old foster son & 1 yr old foster daughter (who is flying on lap, so shes free).

I know there are some great savings if you fly from Minneapolis, but the extra 2 days of driving would have to come out of the Disney time. DH would never "add on" 2 days for the drive he would subtract them from vacation! (glass is half empty with DH!) So I will have to continue checking all possibilities from Winnipeg... If only the flights were cheaper from Fargo or Grand Forks.:confused3

I had a feeling you would be on here!!! LOL Too funny! We were thinking about doing the wpg wo fargo and staying at the Holiday Inn DD loves the pool and slides there....and then going fargo to msp...BUT out flight leaves at 7:20am soooooo that probably won't work going....but comming home it would be a nice break. Plus I would love to goto Mall of America for a bit before we go.....now to make the time go faster....lol

My brother drives down from the Peg, but he rents a car (minivan actually) here and drops it off in Minneapolis. I can't remember the name of the hotel with the car rental that he stays at but if you want to know, I can ask. He does the same on the way back (rents one-way).

Me, I fly

Hi all, just wanted to say hello from another Winnipegger! I go in three days!!! Complete surprise for my DS 7 :thumbsup2

I wish WestJet would go direct out of Winnipeg. I think we have the business ...I actually think people would drive UP from the US to fly direct with WestJet.

Another consideration...doing the Buffalo crossing like those out east do. Anyone cost out hiring a car one way and driving down? I am actually surprised someone in Toronto hasn't come up with the business idea of a shuttle to Buffalo from Toronto.

There is:

Niagara Airbus offers limousine, shuttle and bus service between the Buffalo Airport, Niagara Falls, and Toronto.

Jewel of Niagara offers limousine service from Buffalo Airport.

Buffalo Airport Taxi offers hourly shuttle service between the Buffalo Airport and major downtown Niagara Falls, Canada, hotels for US$40. Children under 6 are free.

I would LOVE IT if westjet flew direct, and if the price were around $380-$450 I would be ALL over it.

If you are going at 6am on Monday we are on the same flight.

The drive to Winnipeg to catch the plane is long enough, driving down to MSP just isn't an option for us. I agree that a direct flight out of Winnipeg would be great. We would pull in people from Northern Ontario and Eastern Sask. I do think the business would be there, even if it was just a once a week flight. I prefer to fly NWA because I can clear customs at Wpg instead of dealing with Toronto airport (just a personal choice) and you can get some great fares. Our trip in August we only paid $249 (plus Canadian taxes of course!) return out of Wpg so for us driving wouldn't pay.
