Winn Dixie vs Goodings

We are off to WDW on Friday. Have always shopped at Goodings but now here that there is a Winn Dixie just a few blocks down the road. Are their prices better than Goodings because I always thought Goodings was expensive.

Yes, we were just there last month and found the prices to be much more reasonable than Goodings!

Rather than going across the intersection at 535 to go into the Crossroads Mall area (and Goodings), turn left. Continue on and the Winn-Dixie is on the right hand side just past the 3rd stoplight (right next to the ABC Liquor Store).

This is good to know. I haven't been to Goodings since we found the Publix on SR192, but the Winn Dixie sounds as if it might be even closer.

We went to the new Winn Dixie last month. It is very clean and the prices were great! We were signed up for a shopper card as we walked in, there are tags on the shelves for specials with the card (I assume they change every week). It wasn't crowded at all on a Saturday afternoon. I've heard Winn Dixie has a bad reputation (we don't have them in our area), but this one was very nice. We used to go to the Super Walmart, but this is closer & less crowded. Prices were comparable to Walmart. It's very quick from OKW, go the back way by the Disney Institute, although the intersection with Hotel Blvd was torn up.

Good to hear that there is a close by alternative to (overpriced) Goodings. One other easy to get to alternative that we always used is the Publix on W. Sand Lake Road. To get to it, take I-4 north out of Disney to the Sand Lake Road exit. Take a left at the end of the ramp. The store is about a mile down on the left. The exit is the same one with the self proclaimed "world's largest McD's playplace"

The Publix is newly built (opened 10/2000), you can pay by debit or credit card, and has a pharmacy in store too.

We were there last month and thought it was a joke. We thought the prices were high, yet we did not apply for one of their special discount cards and paid full price. We have this same program here at home with Shaw's but for 1 visit we didn't inquire and were unsure we would be able to get one anyways. Then we had to scan our own groceries and check our selves out. Not impressed. We have friends who stayed by Old Town (on 192) a week or so ago and went to the Publix there. They said it was great! Great prices, good selections, etc. Oh yeah, and if you want good fresh produce and a good selection, don't go to Winn Dixie. That's another thing that was disappointing. Sorry, I really was not impressed there. There were lots of Publix in the yellow pages close by, and others have mentioned the Super Walmart, and Albertson's is another great grocer.

Does anyone know if there are supermarkets in the area (besides Goodings) that are open 24 hrs.? We just made our DVC reservation for next Easter and we were thinking about getting one of those shuttle services with a grocery stop rather than dealing with the rental car for this trip. However, we will need a grocery stop and our arrival time will be at least 11:00 P.M. Thanks for the information

Does anyone know if there is a liquor store in the same mall area as the Publix? I see where Firefighter Mickey says there is an ABC by the Winn Dixie. We would like to pick up something other than beer and wine during our towncar stop. Thanks, Gayle

Haven't been to the new Winn-Dixie yet, but the one thing Goodings has all over the Publix on 192 is their beer selection. We shopped at Publix when we were down at Christmas and they had only a few brands available. A few days later we made a quick restock trip to Goodings and I was bowled over by the variety of their beer selection. I may have to check out Winn-Dixie on our next trip, though, particularly if there's a liquor store right there.

Having lived in Florida for 12 years and a DVC member for 9 years this year, I would NEVER shop at Winn Dixie. Whoever it was that said they have a bad reputation, they're right. Stores are generally dirty and the meat quality is questionable. I used to shop at Gooding's when I lived in the Orlando area, and it is very good (family owned). However, the one at Crossroads is extremely overpriced. This is basically because it's a tourist area and for no other reason. I believe no matter what supermarket you go to in the Disney/Universal area, you are going to pay higher prices than the norm. I always shop at Publix for my weekly groceries (I'm now in the Tampa/Clearwater area) and find Publix to be superior to either W-D or Gooding's. We are fortunate enough to be able to drive to the DVC resorts and bring our groceries with us. Happy vacations! VAL

I found that Albertson's had the best prices of any of the markets(Winn Dixie included) in the area. It's about a 15 minute drive from the Epcot resort area near Sea World. For us, because we had a car rental, it was worth it. We basically cooked-in every day for 2 weeks. The savings were significant.

Al;bertson's may not be as flashy as the other markets, but the prices compare with what we are accustomed to back home at Shop Rite(a northeast discount supermarket chain).

There is a really nice Publix right near Gaylord Palms. (you know the resort the was supposed to be Opryland?). It is much nicer than the one at 535 and 192 and just as close. Best way to get there?? Buena Vista Drive past carribean beach. Turn left on Victory way. Hit next traffic light and make a left. At second light make a right on International Drive South. Its on your right hand side about a block down. It takes about 15 minutes to get there from OKW. Well worth it though!

I can't say I have anything bad to say about Winn-Dixie. Being from long island new york. Its very clean and most important.. not that busy.. You should see the supermarkets in ny . A very important plus was the ABC liquor store right in the same parking lot...used it twice thats it .,,93 more days till BCV .....dave

Our TTC driver always takes us to Albertson's. I have been very pleased with prices, cleanliness and quality. I also now "know" the store, so I can maximize that 1/2 hour stop!

We had done Super Walmart for a few years now and the Publix at 535 and 192 for a refresh and Thanksgiving Dinner! This last trip I did the new Winn Dixie and was very happy there. I signed up for the card - noproblem. Then I also happened upom the first day grand opening of the Brand New Publix on the quiet end of International Drive behind the Premium Outlets and the Church. I was impressied here too, received fresh flowers and dozens of free samples but thought the prices were better at Winn Dixie. It was really cool to shop at a store on the first day. Every time I took an item off the shelve a clerk moved and fixed the display. I had conversation with corp manager amd the produce manager was dressed up more than most men get for a wedding! The Winn Dixie was most convenient and will be Back. We go 4 times a year and happy to save the time now that these 2 new alternatives are so close by.

As noted above by Niagara2, a new 54,000 square foot Publix opened near WDW just two weeks ago -- on Thursday, June 27, 2002, according to the Publix Web site. It's probably only a mile or two longer drive than to the new Winn-Dixie.

From Hotel Plaza Drive, instead of going across the intersection at 535 into the Crossroads Mall (to Goodings) or turning left (toward the new Winn-Dixie), turn right. Go under I-4 and turn left at the Bahama Breeze restaurant onto Vineland. Drive past Orlando Premium Outlets (on your right). Vineland curves to meet International Drive -- and that's the corner where the new Publix is located (on your left).

The new Publix is open daily from 8:00 a.m. until 10:00 p.m.

I haven't been there yet, but I'm inclined to think that this will best place to shop when staying at a DVC resort at WDW. It's only slightly less convenient than Gooding's or Winn-Dixie, and based on what I've seen at other new Publix stores (such as the Plaza Venezia Publix that BigTigger recommeneded), it should be a great store.

I'll admit I've only been to Goodings....but saw the Winn Dixie and thought I'd try there next time. I guess I'll have to check it out and compare.

Also, an alternate route to the Publix on Sand Lake Rd. ...go like you would to the Winn Dixie but keep going straight...don't turn off with 535. This will take you up to Sand Lake Rd...go right and the Publix (and I think a Walgreens) is on the right. On the left there's a shopping center with an Albertsons and Chamberlin's (natural foods store) There's also an Einstein Bros. there.... I think this was about 15 min from BWV. What's nice about this route is that the roads aren't congested!
