Wine on a Budget

I can usually find good deals for decent wines at our local Shaws market. I do like a decent red wine, but won't pay more than $10 bottle. I always scan to see what is on sale, which ones have coupons attached and which wines are being cleared out. Last week, I bought 6 bottles of Yellow Tail 2006 Reserve Shiraz for about $6/bottle normally $14. When you buy 6 bottles, Shaws will takes $5 off your total purchase.

Also our State run liquor stores often run specials on wines at different times of the year. You can sometimes get wine that is on sale plus another 15% off if you buy a case.

If I couldn't find good deals, I would probably stop drinking wine.

I bought a bottle of Lindeman's Cabernet Sauvignon at Kroger for $5 recently and it is quite good. Very smooth - not bitter - lovely for the money.

I've heard about Two-buck chuck before...I suppose I'll have to try it!

Also at Trader Joes there is Merlot Called Purple Moon that is good.

Purple Moon also makes a Cab, a Shiraz and a Chardonnay that are good. All just $4 a bottle at my TJ's...cannot beat that!

We love all the wines from Oliver Winery. We can get it for $5-6 a bottle, but it's a local winery, so I'm not sure how many stores out of the area carry it (here you can get it at Walmart, Meijer, Kroger, etc).

Our Walgreen's carries a Liberty Creek brand for 2/$10 with a mail in rebate for $4.00. I'm liking both the cab and chardonney:thumbsup2 Walgreen's or CVS have weekly wine specials that are always very economical.

My standard is the Alamos Malbec. I get it at Costco for about $6-$7 a bottle. Then I try other random ones there but that's the one I always pick up a bottle of.

Albertson's has Black Swan usually 2 for $10, the Shiraz and Merlot are rated high in the "budget" wine by Wine Spectator, I think the Shiraz scored over 90.

Another vote here for Trader Joe's "three buck chuck". Yep, I'm in VA. I like the Shiraz and the Merlot. They have an English cheddar cheese with caramelized onions in it that is wonderful to pair with either wine. I like to use TJs little pita crackers. On a good Friday evening, that's how I'll start the weekend!

Another vote for Barefoot wines....the liquor store here sells it for $4.99/bottle and the ones I've had have all been really good for the price. :) Also suggesting Bully Hill, it's made locally to me, but I'm pretty sure it's sold nationwide. Most of their bottles can be bought for around $7-$8 each and they have a huge variety of wines. I'm particularly fond of their Niagara and Riesling.

After two glasses does it really matter what kind of wine it is anyway? After you've had a glass or two of wine, it's time to step it down a notch in terms of quality of wine :rotfl:

I love Two Buck Chuck, I'm also in CA and our TJ's has it for $1.99 a bottle. I love their white zin, it's very light and refreshing...in fact I think I may open my chilled bottle to have with dinner tonight. :) Pasta...YUM! :) I also very much enjoy Barefoot wines, they have a good white zin and a great sweet red wine, both are about $5 a bottle around here. Also Yellowtail, they have a variety of really good wines for about $5 a bottle as well.

Louis Jadot-the beaujolais wine is wonderful and very inexpensive, maybe $10 a bottle on average.

We were given this by a client of my DH who was an ambassador,he would bring us $100+ bottles as well as this,he could afford anything ,but drank what he liked. We both really like this and can afford it.

I think I am going to try some of this wine. Trader Joe's just opened here a week or so ago!:thumbsup2

Its pretty good. We were in Kansas City last weekend and stopped by Trader Joe's and got a few. Opened our first bottles last night...white zin was really good...pinot grigio was pretty good :)

If you know your price range and are willing to explore red wine, you should try anything that looks appealing to you.

If you haven't tried a certain blend, brand or wine from a particular country, and it is within your budget, Go For It!

You will learn more about wine and about your own particular taste. :)

We were at Sam's Club yesterday and bought Barrel Box Cabernet Sauvignon for $7 - 3 Liter box (= 4x750ml bottles). A really good deal and we love this wine!:thumbsup2
