When The Wave, a new full-service restaurant at Disney's Contemporary Resort, opens next month, it will boast an unusual wine cellar.

Besides stocking no California labels -- those wines are available upstairs at the California Grill -- the ground-floor restaurant will feature wines of the Southern Hemisphere, including vintages from Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Chile and Argentina.

But that's not the most unusual aspect. The Wave will offer only wines that have screw caps; no wines with corks will be available. One exception will be sparkling wines, which are not yet available with screw caps.

John Blazon, master sommelier and manager of wine sales and standards for Walt Disney World Resort, said he wants "to show middle America that you can enjoy a great bottle of wine despite how it's sealed."

Blazon said he has collected 80 wines of various varietals and price points to present at the restaurant's opening, which is scheduled for June 7.

Once considered an indicator of low quality, screw caps, also known as Stelvin closures, have been gaining popularity among premium wine producers for several years as a more reliable means of sealing a bottle of wine.

That sounds great! No worry about the wine being corked, and it's better for the environment as well.
I had a great wine at Jiko last week, and it was a screw top bottle. Can't think of the name though.

As Steve Martin once said to Kermit, "Would you like to sniff the bottle cap?"

Very interesting.

This is very interesting. I will have to go over there and sample some of their wines on my next trip.

screw caps and boxed wines are the "new wave" for environment -

one problem with screw caps for the vineyards is the equipment cost to change over -

but the most obvious is wine "snob" that screw caps are "jug" wine "boone's farm"

Australia, New Zealand and France are leading the way in the screw tops - they arent sure how the wine will age (10+ years) They believe it will do fine - and also

you must open the screw top and let the wines breath, or you will have a carbon dioxide "fizz" since the screw top doesnt breath like the cork!

Now I think dh will want to try The Wave!!

on letterman the other night, paris hilton was hawking her new "champagne in a can" - is this next for disney?!

(funny thing is, no matter how many times dave shook the can and pulled off the flip tab, it never really "foamed" very much - ahem....)

My favorite wine is Benton Lane pinot noir. It is an Oregon pinot noir, and they use screw caps. I love that wine, and it is fairly pricey at 25 dollars a bottle.

Well, I actually read about *gasp* people not being able to finish a bottle of wine! And they had to have a re-corking charge added.

I am an environmentalist and was long before Al Gore came along. It will be great for the environment (although I really never thought about it because I keep the corks for making cork boards). And it will be so great for every male out there who has to struggle to make the removal of said cork seem so easy.

This is indeed good news for wine drinkers. :thumbsup2

Trichloroanisole, is no laughing matter!

Screw-capped wines had been around for a while, particularly white wines, and even a few reds, but those were the kind that were meant to be consumed quickly.

I clearly remember in Napa, when PlumpJack Winery, raised eyebrows when half of its 1997 reserve cabernet sauvignon reserve was bottled with a traditional cork closure, the other half with screw caps. I bought one of each at the winery and wish I had the forethought to buy a few more, as there is a high resale market for the set.

I remember while in France a while back, they sold wine in boxes, or as I called it "wine on tap!!" It was great, and a small box didn't last long w/ us....
