Wine and Dine 2015

Does everyone typically wear their magic band during their races? Or do you have someone meet you with it after the race?

I've run with mine on too and had no issues. Having said that though I usually wear a garmin step tracked in the same spot on my wrist, so I was used to it.

One things about these races - the training is far more difficult than the actual race. If you can get in all of your training and make it to the starting line but fail to finish for reasons beyond your control (injury or illness), I don't see anything wrong with accepting the medal and donating it. Heck, it seems like a great way to turn a negative into a positive. But I have also hit low points in my running life and understand how someone could really get down at times.

I have made it a policy in life to always have fun wherever I go, or I don't go. That being said, two weeks ago Sunday I was running a trail, tripped and hit my head on a rock, was unconscious until my husband found me, and spent the night in the ER with a subarachnoid brain hemorrhage and hip flexor problems from the fall. The positive was that I had already finished 10.5 of a 12 miler! I still ran the Atlanta 10 miler this past Sunday... slowly but I finished. Another reason to rejoice! I'm still planning to do Jingle Jungle and W&D. Maybe not as strong I had planned, but this time will be not for speed, but for mental (and brain) toughness.

I ordered a box of 10 packets off Amazon, it was like $8. They have individual packets at my supermarket, but only of a couple types of almond butters, and I like peanut butter best. I got a box because I eat pb every day... I'm a little bit of a pb-holic. :o

I think I heard recently that Amazon has Prime Same Day Delivery in Orlando now. I'm considering ordering some things because DD25 and I both decided to carry on and are not checking any bags. :)

ETA: They are in Orlando but have very strict same day rules that I think would not allow delivery to our condo. Plus a $35 minimum. I think we would be better using Uber or Garden Grocer. :(

Alert levels from a volunteer tag, for academic, educational discussion...

EXTREME(black flag); EXTREME AND DANGEROUS; ADVISE NOT TO COMPETE/ COURSE MAY ME SHORTENED/ FOLLOW EVENT OFFICIAL INSTRUCTIONS

HIGH(red flag); POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS CONDITIONS; SLOW DOWN/ HYDRATE ADAQUATELY/ HEAT INJURY IS POSSIBLE

MODERATE(yellow flag); LESS THAN IDEAL CONDITIONS; SLOW DOWN / PARTICIPANTS WITH HIGH RISK OF HEAT STROKE SHOULD WITHDRAW(AL) their card had a spelling problem

LOW(green flag); GOOD CONDITIONS; ENJOY THE EVENT/ BE ALERT

Here is the most concise recommendation I could find for running in the heat/humidity:

In the past, we have received heat alert emails from Disney. I will likely have my own bottle if we are in the HIGH to EXTREME. Volunteers usually get extra precautionary instruction, but bad conditions can push any water station into dysfunction. Hopefully they break out the baby pools filled with ice water and sponges.

Bluto as Bacchus, the costume on the left. It started out as just Bacchus but I never know when to stop.

The first year the Wine & Dine was ran, it was paired with a Halloween 5K through MK. I ran as Bacchus. Be prepared for a lot of toga cat calls and Animal House chants. They also used to put out the float from the night parade which had a rotating Bacchus perched upon the top. I always tip my proverbial hat to him, as he is the spirit of the event.

When Magic Bands were first announced, runDIsney events were what came to mind first. I love wearing it, as I don't need to worry about losing my hotel key (apparently I don't care about my ID or insurance or credit card that I carry during the race...)

Re the magic bands... just to make sure I'm not missing something. We dont' HAVE to run with them right? We can just wear the party wristbands they give us to get into the after party?

Correct. No magic band required. If you aren't staying on property, you may not even have one.

A different kind of sweeping query... does anyone know/remember where are likely to be the hard sweep points, where one might actually find the sweep bus? Or, alternatively, thoughts on really good spots to bag it if I need to cut my losses and end my race early? High ankle sprain - gah! Might be better within 2 weeks and good enough to handle an easy run of W&D, but if I need to call it quits I'd love to ID a few spots that would make it relatively easy. Read: I really do not want to be sitting on the side of the road for an hour, waiting for someone to come get me, lol! I remember seeing a bus in the AK parking lots last year, but that's all I noticed.

The four that stick out in my memory are the parking lot of Animal Kingdom, the turn from Osceola onto World Drive (just before Sarge's hill over the official entrance into the Studios), the ramp from World Drive to Buena Vista Drive (shortly after the Clif Gel dispersal) and the parking lot of the Studios (before the tight, slightly treacherous mile around the boardwalk area).

We got our gift cards today. I am glad that I will not have to go to try to get one at registration. I also agree that this is a strategy to have fewer cards used. If someone forgets the card at home and the line to get a replacement is crazy long, some will not go through it and just give up the $15.

I sure did love the first year with the voucher for any drink and any food item inside the park after the race.

I didn't like the tear off coupon voucher the first year. It was miserable hot and people were puking and passing out everywhere. The lines were crazy insane. I gave mine away and didn't use them. I felt cheated. At least with the gift card if you don't feel like staying for the party or don't care to eat right after you run, you have the option of using it at another time.

OK peeps! Have an even different prerace food question for you guys. Because we have all shared so much in the days leading up to this event I just feel like everyone here's a wealth of information. I'm going to miss being able to query everybody once the race is over.

My question deals with this: what is everyone's plan or best idea for a good prerace meal on Friday and Saturday afternoon if you're not going to the parks? I repeat, we have not decided if we will pay the exorbitant rates Disney is asking for tickets and so I think I need to make a back up plan which will involve meal ideas that are not inside the parks. Any good tips or restaurants with menus that you guys like particularly? We will have a rental car and are staying at Bay lake tower, So even if it's something that is in the community or general area, suggest away!

If you don't have a restaurant idea, but for instance always make a certain meal at home before local races, would you share that? We have a one bedroom so I do have the ability to cook something if we don't go out to a restaurant. Not that that's how I plan on spending the time mind you, but I'd like to consider all my options. ;)

After the expo on Friday, I am taking the BF for his birthday dinner, probably not on property. Maybe Bull & Bear?? There are a slew of places in the Dr. Phillips area or if you are in the mood for a little drive, the Lake Eola area of Downtown Orlando has quite a few nice yummy bistro/café style restaurants.
Saturday, I haven't planned yet. No park admission, so either at a resort or somewhat close off property. I like to eat at places that are different than what I can choose at home, but I don't want to be too adventurous a few hours before a race.

How scary! So glad you are okay!!

I spent a long weekend in the ICU, so thank you for the eleven or twelve pages of reading this morning. Helping to keep me motivated. :yay::yay::thumbsup2:thumbsup2
I did come home to find my gift card, so that made me smile too. Now its time to start packing in earnest.

Wow to those who have spent time in the hospital. Crazy that you guys are still on track to come. I'll stop complaining about my sinus infection and go out for my run today.

Does anyone where their running shoes on a day to day basis as it gets closer to race day? I wear low cut boots to work most days and I've realized after the 3rd or 4th day of wearing them my ankle is on fire. I think it is time for more supportive work shoes but for now I might have to wear my running sneakers to work. I just don't think bright yellow goes well with my business casual outfits haha.

How scary!!! I'm so glad you are okay. Lots of reasons to rejoice.

Got our gift cards yesterday as well and for some reason that really made it REAL!!!! I'm getting super excited now.

bada$$! You are going to list this as a condition on the back of your bib, right? And tape imaging results from the hospital visit. You don't want med volunteers treating horses when they need to be treating zebras.

Pretty much no. I hate running right now (haven't liked it a bit since Goofy - worst idea I ever had) and really don't want to go at all now. Even when I liked running I just don't get the "OMG I CAN'T DO IT!!!" "OMG WHAT COSTUME AM I WEARING??" stuff. It's a race. That's all.

I'm just waiting on approval of moving a personal business day from Monday to Friday and then I can do something I really want to do that weekend.

But even if I was, I find it offensive that were I to try and not finish, I'd be expected to take something I didn't earn and clearly said "No thank you" to just so I didn't hurt a volunteer's feelings. Just because they're volunteers doesn't mean listening and respecting of opinions goes out the window. They should be trained that if someone says no to an offered medal IT IS OK.

So honestly? Why are you still here? Every post you've made on this thread that I can recently remember has been negative and how you're not looking forward to the race or you don't want to go to the race etc. For you to be so negative and condescending in this post is unwarranted. The majority of our posts here are NOT about a costume and NOT about not being able to do it. We are supporting each other- and frankly- you're really bringing down the vibe. If you don't want to run the race, don't. Do the polite thing and move on.

Ugh rain is back in the extended forecast. I don't know what I will do if it is another splash and dash.
