Wine and Dine 2015

Hi everyone! I am officially joining your thread. :flower1: I am registered for the W&D half, it will complete my C2C and is the day before my birthday! I will be running my first half (Dumbo Double Dare) at Disneyland the first weekend in September.

I just started training 3 weeks ago. In January I endured an excruciating double jaw surgery that left me with 5 titanium plates in my upper and lower jaws, wired shut for a month and unable to chew or eat solid foods for over 3 months. I've been running 3 days a week (did 5 miles last night yeah!), lifting weights with a trainer 2 days, spin class 1 day and yoga on my rest day. I am pleased with my progress considering I hadn't done any form of exercise in nearly 8 months. I am excited to go through this with all of you and looking forward to everyone's tips and tricks!

Welcome DWorldOrBust! I'm so sorry to hear about your jaw surgery - that sounds awful. I hope you're feeling good. :)

And also, if anyone could share their best running in humidity tips, that would be great. Saturday's run is looking like it's going to be a hot one for me. Forecasted high of upper 80s/90 and humid. Definitely planning to try to get out early to get it done that day, but it's still looking like even 6-7 am will be hot.

Not sure about Raw Threads exactly - all I know is that they have some wicked cute Disney Inspired running outfits - skirts, tanks, long sleeves, headbands and such. I've ordered from the Orlando based company. I got a complete outfit and it's super soft and fit nicely. But wasn't cheap.

I run early before the sun is beating down on me. Sunday morning is looking like it will be mid 70s for me and then climbing to 90, I will probably be out running at 6. Pace will be slower than usual. I do almost all my runs early though so is not much of a change me. Gotta love michigan though, I had jogging pants on this morning (it was 42), 3 days later mid 70s in the morning.

I don't think there's much you can do but go as early as you can before the sun is too high, make sure you drink enough water, and just slow your pace down.

I've done my past 2 runs in the morning, so I'll definitely do that. I'm going to go even earlier than I did those times though. I'll probably try to head out at like 6 or so. I have no plans for the rest of the day, so I'll get up early to get it done and then rest a bit after. :)

Exactly! Comfort is always my #1 priority. And to be clear - I am NOT at all crafty and can't sew more than a few sloppy stitches to mend a tear or put on a button. But it's easy to, for example, put a light blue a running top over a light blue running skirt, add white "gloves" made of white knee-high socks with the toes cut off, a bit of black ribbon around the neck and a tiara or blue ribbon in the hair... voila, Cinderella!

Genius!

I have Week 2 Day 2 down, it looks like we're all dealing with the same issue this week... heat and humidity. I've moved my runs to the mornings, before the sun comes up, to beat the heat as much as possible. Even with that, I still don't feel like I'm getting my best runs out. I keep reminding myself that it's to be expected with higher temps and humidity.

Today was nice and cool and dry here in the morning, a nice change from the stickyness of yesterday, but I didn't do my 30 min run. My left hamstring was really bothering me last night after spin class and sitting strangely at my desk most of the day (I had my left leg hyper extended for too long I think) so I decided to take the day off so that I didn't screw up my 5 mile run on Saturday.

I've been MIA for awhile but popping back in to say HI! I booked our flights this morning so I'm getting really excited! I haven't really started training for the Wine and Dine yet but I ran a 10k 3 weeks ago for my Proof of Time to submit. I'm hoping to start running again this weekend. Crossing fingers!

I can't decide if we (husband and I) are going dress up or not. I can't think of any good "Wine and Dine" ideas. Trying to save money and either make the costumes or use what we have because we're dreaming of going to Paris for the half next year! It's a stretch but a girls gotta dream!

My only tips are what everyone else said: get out early and take it much slower than usual. Don't get upset if you have a "bad" run--you're still getting the benefits because your body is working just as hard even if you're going slower than normal. Not a good idea to have a speed workout on those days, if you do speed workouts. I will sometimes move my runs to the treadmill at the gym if I get up early and see that it's already around 80 with 90% humidity (that happened to me once last week). And check the weather before you head out to see if there's an air quality alert--not a great idea to be doing strenuous exercise outside on those days.

I mysteriously hurt my ankle and had pain radiating up the side of my leg on Wednesday so I took yesterday off. Feeling better today though and looking forward to knocking out tomorrow's 4 miler.

Pretty much ALL of my runs are in humidity living on the Gulf coast of FL, lol! Humidity was down in the 40%s once last winter... thought I'd shrivel up like a prune. ;) My usual runs this time of year are generally in the 80s-100 temps with humidity from 70-100%. And I suffered heat exhaustion several times in my younger years, which has made me more susceptible to heat-related illness now.

My #1 tip? Slow. It. Down. Seriously - heat + humidity is no joke and no one wants to wind up ill or, you know, dead. I run by feel, not numbers, in the heat. If you feel like your exertion level is comparable to a regular, less hot/humid day, then keep doing that, no matter what the pace is.

Beyond slowing down, I hydrate all day, every day, but will start adding electrolytes the day, two days before a long run in the heat. Just a glass or two of Nuun per day. And I make sure I'm taking in electrolytes during the run. The kind of sweating I do in this weather can easily run 5-8 pounds by the end of 10 miles, and that depletes electrolytes big time.

I use a visor to keep sun off my face while allowing heat to escape my head. The least amount of clothing I can get away with, and the lightest-weight fabrics I have. I make every attempt to run in shade as much as possible and will even do "shade intervals" where I'll run in shady parts, walk in sunny parts. I like to loop a park with a chilled water fountain, where I'll stop for a few minutes to douse myself in cool water to bring my core temp down.

I've been running our brutal FL summers for years, so I can vouch it's doable - one just needs to be careful!

Thanks for the tips everyone! I'm definitely going to try to get out as early as possible, and take it really slow. :)

And wear sunscreen! Seriously, not just to keep from getting sunburned, but it will actually help you stay a bit cooler. Not a LOT cooler, but it does help. My favorite is the Cool Zone spray I think it's banana boat or coppertone (it's an orange and blue bottle)

Also, I sometimes find that running in the evenings is cooler than running in the mornings depending on the heat and sunset times. For us, here in Western PA, it's less humid in the evenings than the day time, and the likelihood of finding shady spots is greater. So sometimes, even though it's a couple degrees warmer (say, 80 pm vs 75am ) it feels cooler....

Got my 3.5 miles in this morning. Last night going to bed I really didn't know if I would make it. I overdid it a bit on my run Wednesday and my hammies and quads felt so tight! But one of those amazing running things happened and the overnight rest seemed to help enough to do my easy run today. whew! I'm really trying hard to stay on track this training sequence. I'm going for 5 on sunday and in keeping with the discussion... will probably opt for the treadmill since by the time I'll get home to run, it is supposed to be mid-nineties... no thanks!

Ok I have a gripe that I'm sure you all can relate to. I was talking to my coworker today about a dog that chased me when I was out for a run last night. I said that there are 23 dogs on my road and I've had to deal with at least half of them so far. I was saying that I wish that the owner would be outside when the dog is not leashed to rein it in when it is after me, and she said that that's why these people live in the country. To let their dogs run free. And I should find a different route. I was chased by a dog when I was 5, bitten by a Doberman when I walked in the door to someone's house and also chased while riding a bike by a dog which caused me injury because I fell off my bike. Let's just say my first instinct when confrontation is not to embrace the dog. I have pepper spray but really don't want to resort to that. I carry a stick, which used to be the size of a baton but became too cumbersome and has now become a nail I keep in my iphone holder on my arm. I thought about bringing dog biscuits with me but then I thought that might make them chase me even more!! And what happens when I run out of them? Lol

I mentioned that I would like to put a flyer in the dog owners' mailboxes and plead with them to keep the dogs at bay if they see me running by for the 2nd pass (I do and out and back) and I just felt like she was acting as if I did something wrong and I should be the one to change my ways.

And did I mention that is ruins my run because I have to stop and deal with dog??!! :(

I live in the country and can relate completely! And I was chased and bit by a German Shepard when I was 8 so I have a terror of loose dogs. That is one of the reason's I run on my treadmill, when I would really like to run outside. But I know the people on my road have dogs that they let run loose. I will say that I have a dog who runs loose but he doesn't chase anything but rabbits! I just don't trust a dog who barks and chases me. But like you, where I live it is the norm and I am the odd ball. When I lived in California you would be fined and your dog picked up by animal control if it ran free. Even in the country. But here in Arkansas everyone has a dog, usually a big dog and no one has fences or kennels. :(

I'm sorry you guys have to deal with that. I am a dog owner, but also a big fan of fenced yards. And not just for people passing by, but for the dogs safety as well. I have seen so many animals who ran free get hit by cars and it's sad to see that. If you know your neighbors I don't think it's bad to mention it to them. And either way, u don't think feeling that way is wrong. I hate when people discount someone's feelings!
