Windsor Hills vs Disney Deluxe

I only stayed onsite once, camping at Fort Wilderness when I was 9. All other trips were offsite, including our honeymoon. I don't think there's any less magic staying off site. That's just me, though. We got our condo for less than a value resort rate, so we can stay a whole lot longer! :) There's a lot more bang for my buck offsite!

We are DVC owners and a villa owner in the Formosa area.

We have stayed at numerous disney hotels, but have to agree with George that the disney transportation system (with the exception of the monorail) is not a plus point.

We used to use the disney buses all the time (we didn't know any better), and you can usually estimate a 10 minute wait for the bus, potentially 5 - 10 mins whilst is visits other resorts, and then the 5 - 10 min travel time to the park, if you then add the 5 - 10 min walk to the bus stop from your room, your potentially getting to 30 mins just to get to a park. If your then travelling at the park opening or closing, then you need to consider that fact that you'll probably have to stand on the bus, or even worse if it was full then you'll have to wait for the next one.

On one occasion from MK we had to wait 1 hr 10 mins in the middle of the afternoon for a Beach Club bus, the queue by this time was horendous, and not everyone got on the bus.

On MK park closing you can easily wait 40-60 mins for a bus.

Driving to and from the parks was just so much easier, in fact when we stay at BCV, we walk to Epcot, take the boat to MGM ( novalty factor) and drive everywhere else.

We find that driving from our villa is far quicker door - door (except MK sometimes) than using the buses and is about the same time from driving from Beach Club to the parks.

But I promise you, I could leave ANY other WDW resort, and if 2 us of left at the same time, one to go stand in the bus lines, and me to go to my car and drive home, in 99% of the cases I would be there before you! DVC or not, WHR is actually closer than many WDW resort properties, the only exception being MK monorail resorts are closer to MK, and Epcot resorts are closer to MK. I'm willing to bet I could beat an AKL guest to AK, since they'll be waiting for the next bus to leave while we'll be pulling into the parking lot! LOL

Anyhow, good spirited debate, but I just don't feel that getting free bus service is worth all of the extra $$ you will shell out. The EMH...well...mayybe....but we're still staying in a nicer place for a lot less $$...bottom line!

Just had to chime in to say that I absolutely agree with this! And I don't own anything in Orlando, so absolutely no ulterior motive here. :goodvibes We've stayed at Disney resorts, and drove ourselves most of the time even then. Standing on a bus after a long day at a park is no fun at all! We now almost always stay in an offsite townhome or condo and love it!

When I was a child our family would go to Disney and we always stayed off property because it was cheaper. I always wanted to stay in the park. So when we went we stayed at Port Orleans, we had 2 children. It was fine with 2 small children we rented a small refrig to keep milk and juice and brought cereal and snacks. I liked being on the Disney property. We went during February so the bus wait was not that long. 2nd time we went we had 3 children and stayed at Coronado Springs. Now that the kids were older sharing a bathroom was a problem and my youngest still took a nap. It was not the ideal situation for us. Last year we stayed in a 3 bedroom condo. It was great we had a lot of space 2 bathrooms. It was great that the kids had their own bedroom. We did rent a car, but we than had more freedom to go as we pleased. The pool was so nice at the place that my kids wanted to stay by the pool instead of go the the park.
Next time we go we will stay in a condo and only make plans to go to the park part of the time.

Hi, just chiming in with my 2 cents.:) We are a family of five and have done both on and offsite. Now that the kids are a little older we absolutely prefer having more space not to mention 2 bathrooms :rolleyes1 . We also love that lights out for the kids does not mean lights out for us. That said i think that the Op has the best plan by splitting a stay- you really will get the best of both worlds. You can enjoy being immersed in the magic 24/7 and yet still have some nights when you get a little more personal space. The one thing to always remember is that you want to have a little down time planned in so you don't come home needing a vacation from your vacation:confused3. hope your vacation turns out to be truly magical, whatever your choice!

Just adding my two cents as well;) We have always stayed in a pool home and have been to disney many times now. You just can't beat the space! We are spending one night at Fort Wilderness and I am honestly Dreading it LOL. I'm probably the only person you'll ever see say that LOL :rotfl: I may be in Disney but i'm sure going to miss my own bedroom with its peace and quiet:sad2:

I have priced the disney deluxe resorts and just can't justify staying in one when I can save money AND have a lot more space. I don't know about the rest of you but when you put my family all together in one little room we tend to fight a lot.:rolleyes1 You just can't help getting on each others nerves, everybody needs some personal space and I think we would kill each other if we stayed two weeks in a hotel room lol.

OP i'm sure you will do what you feel is best for your family and I hope you have a Magical vacation. Mine can't get here soon enough! :rolleyes1

To each his/her own I guess, but we do not own anything in Florida and absolutely agree with George on this one. ;)

How far is this Windsor Hills from Universal? We are planning a trip in November and beginning to look at where to stay.

WH is about 20min from Universal give or take a few minutes depending on traffic on I-4.

Not sure if this is place to ask this, but a lot of you seem so knowledgeable about WH. We r staying there for first time in October. Actually our first time in a condo.
since we r cleaning up ourselves, is it proper to leave a tip for the person that comes in after you leave to straighten up for next guest?:laundy: popcorn::

Thats a good question. I know if you stay under 7 days (usually) they charge a $65-75.00 cleaning fee anyways, so I always just assumed this was included with the price I paid for all of our 2 week vacations. I'm sure they wouldn't mind if you left a tip though.;) Maybe one of the others that own a home can tell us what the right thing to do in that situation is.:thumbsup2

I agree with renting a home in Windsor Hills, especially with a 4 year old.

At least our 4 year old daughter would easily go through 2 or 3 changes of clothers per day, because she would play in the water jets in MK, or she would eat an ice cream and half of it would end in her clothes because it was so hot that i melted FAST, etc. To me one of the biggest perks of renting a home is having a washer and dryer, and not having to stay around to take the clothes out when the cycle is done.

If our dd were older, I might not mind staying in a hotel room with her for many days, but now we love to have a room for her and another for us.

Also I hate long walks to get to the hotel pool, nothing can beat the convience of having a pool in your own home.

We also love staying onsite, so we tend to do a couple of nights at a WDW hotel (want to try BWI, BC or YC for next trip) and the rest of the time at the rental home.

We were there in september, and since we arrived just after park openings, we never rode the trams, since we were so close to the front of the parks and it was easier to walk with the stroller than fold it for the short ride.

I definetly prefer to put my dd in her carseat every time and fold the stroller in the car, than ride standing with the stroller and dd in the bus.

DD and I will be travelling with 2 other moms and their 4 yo in a couple of weeks and will stay onsite, because definetly the Disney buses are great when you have a bigger party, otherwise you need more cars. But I am :scared1: at the thought of relying solely on Disney transportation. But I know my friends would never agree to rent 3 cars if we stayed offsite, so that is the main reason why we will stay onsite the entire week.

Next september we are renting a bigger house at WH and will be going with friends, and each family will have a car, so I think that will work great.

I have stayed at both and I have to say Windsor Hills is the way to go! With my DH, DD4 and DS2 we all had space to move around. And we all know after a long day in the park with the kids, we adults need time to wind down!

Having a kitchen we were able to save $ by eating breakfast in the townhouse AND pack snacks for the day. I truly don't think you would be missing out on anything by staying at WH. My 4 yo keeps asking when we are going back to the "florida house" so I KNOW she had a great time. We rented a townhouse for $100 a night and rented a mivivan for the week and it was still less expensive than disney. I think we spent $1100. for the car and townhouse. We felt we would rather put the saved $ towards the character dinners and the bibbiti bobbiti boutique. princess:

Whatever you choose, hope you have a Magical Vacation :wizard:

Hi all,

Just my second post - and it's a long one - but I thought I'd share some of my trip planning experience to date and also ask a few questions about WH. Keep in mind all this is predicated on the fact that we couldn't firm up our vacation schedules from work until April 12 for a June 6 to 13 WDW vacation. Since then I (DH50) have gone on a planning bender :surfweb: :scared1:

This is our first big(read expensive!) vacation in over three years, and we need it! Our party is (me) DH50(wants Magic and some golf), DW46(wants Magic and some relaxation), DD19, DS16, DD15 (typical teens - want Magic and pools). Our budget is $1200 per person/$6000 total from northern NH, and this needs to be an A+ vacation within those budget constraints. We are not kidding ourselves, 7 day WDW trips aren't cheap even staying offsite -air + lodging + WDW tickets + food + car + all the other plusses! We could save perhaps $1200 total by staying in lesser accomodations, taking redeye flights, renting a car from the cheapest company, eating cheap, etc, but the reality in life is that you almost never get more than what you pay for. The real challenge is in not getting less. I DON'T want to save 20% and ruin my vacation with uncomfortable beds, crowded bathrooms, rental car lines, closed/dirty/crowded pools, long walks other than in the park, waiting for buses/shuttles - yes, I have done this before ;-)

First, a big thanks to all who have posted tips and advice in this discussion board.

Second, my comments:
After reading many forums - this board, trip-advisor, yahoo, etc, I have booked a 4bdr/4bath pool home with pillow-top mattresses, pool/spa, pool table, foosball, computer and WiFi, etc, in WH for my family's June 6 thru 13 vacation thru a private owner at vrbo for $1300 (tax incl). We stayed on-site at the Poly many years ago ('91) with our 3 young children and honestly didn't find it to be anything special (aka Magical) as far as a resort experience beyond the WDW theme and the almost always nice CM's. We have also visited WDW/SeaW/BuschG(I'm a former A-B employee and Busch parks were free) for multiday visits two other years since and stayed off-site with good results in townhome style accomodations (most recently at Regal Palms a few years ago for a Sea World/Busch Gardens vacation, which was a nice stay for the price). This time we are doing WDW exclusively and wanted to be closer and with much luxury - but still at good value for our money. This is perhaps the last family vacation we will ever take as a group(the teens are quickly becoming adults :sad1: :) with adult agendas) and we want it to be special, memorable, and FUN for ALL.

I am a rather demanding, experienced traveler, and at 5 star prices(WDW) I expect 5 star amenities and service. This is bluntly where WDW just doesn't deliver based upon my personal experience and that of many others. The rooms, bedding, and resort pools aren't anything special; the extra magic hours tend to go un-used especially with the already extended hours during busier months. MK is open 9a to 11p - who's getting up (especially the "overworked" DW46 and "those teenagers") at 6am while on vacation to eat and get to transportation by 7:30 - 8:00 am or staying to midnight and beyond? The transportation system is a plus at a monorail serviced resort - but for going beyond MK I agree that the bus waits and transfers can be annoying especially at peak hours. We're planning to get out early every OTHER day, but probably not enough to justify the extra-magic hours benefit.

Having a party of five in a single room/bath anywhere is simply a recipe for disaster especially with older children. As such, I priced(through WDW and numerous other sources including AAA, bookit, travel agents, and the big three online packagers) staying at either a WDW deluxe or moderate with two rooms (or villa accomodations) or a FW cabin(with single bathroom problem). Factoring in the price of 5 x 7 park hopper+ tickets($1440) and airfare component($750 to $1000), the cheapest was a travelocity deal for two ASPop(or similar) rooms at roughly $2000 for the week; next the FW cabin at $2425 for seven nights - roughly twice the price of staying at WH. The problem with FW cabin is one bathroom(granted campground bathroom is available), bedding/sleeping concerns, very large site (even more walking), inconvenient bus system. We also considered renting an RV for the week at around $1000 to $1500(rv) + $700(site) but decided against this option for the same reasons. Two resort rooms or a suite at a moderate WDW were $3000 and up, and forget the villas or deluxe WDW resorts - $4000+ for a week (maybe $3500 if you can get DVC points at $10/point - but very difficult for short term planning). Throw in the park tickets at $1440 total and $39 pp/pd for the meal plan($1365 total - you might as well buy it when staying onsite except at the villas) to any of these lodging options and the price starts getting really out of hand. On an "apples to apples" comparison, the WDW lodging prices are two to three times that of WH, and even more if you go down just one notch of luxury at other off-site resorts.

Note: A reminder, this is based on a fairly short notice June booking. To be fair, an AS "suite" can be booked for under $1200 off season, but you are still pretty much unable to cook other than microwave meals. With the exception of a villa or FW, you pretty much might as well buy the meal plan at $39 per person per day - for us this would be $1365. While we don't plan on cooking all of our meals, we will eat all breakfasts in, pack some snacks, eat three dinners out, and still come in well under this total in food for the week. WDW is offering the meal plan free in late Aug/early Sept - it's a heck of a deal if you can go at that time - but it is both back to school and hurricane season.

Third, my questions("FINALLY" ;) you say):

1) Is there a local taxi company anyone can recommend, and if known what are the approximate worst case (MK?)fares from WDW? I ask as there may be an evening when the kids want to stay at the park but DW46 and I want to leave and let them come back on their own.

2) On the subject of golf: I would like to play two or three rounds during our vacation. Is there a discount on play at Mystic Dunes for those staying at WH? Other recommended courses in area? Discounted tee times? (I'm looking into advance booking at Golfpac, etc.) Is there anyone staying there(other DH's with non-golfing DW's perhaps;) ) that would like to join me for a round during the time I'll be there (can play June 7 thru 12)? I'm a 10 index (I won't hold up you single digit players) and enjoy playing with anyone that's good company regardless of ability(or lack thereof) within reason (as long as we keep up with the group ahead).

3) Is there a day spa in the area? If I get to play golf, DW46, DD19, and DD15 get a spa treatment(pedicure/manicure). This is simply not negotiable - I know which battles to run from - it's their vacation too! :)

Thanks for all the tips, reviews and comments. I hope all currently there and going soon have wonderful vacations!

We are looking for a nice place at Windsor Hills for the end of August/September that also has a pool. Looking to see who can recommend what places for me. Should I just go onto their site and look? I would like comments from those that have stayed at a place. Thanks.

This is what kills me about WDW resorts. I don't mind spending upwards of $400 for a hotel room on a special occasion, but I want the four or five stars, and no Disney hotel compares to a Ritz-Carlton, Four Seasons, W, or a boutique hotel. This is why Disney is allowing the Four Season to build one of their hotels on its property.

We just returned from WH and you may be interested to know there is a shuttle for $10 p/p r/t going to/from all the major parks and the outlets. I still have the sheet with schedule, which likely changes frequently. For MArch, Return times to WH from MK were at 5:00pm, 8:00pm, and 10:00pm. From Epcot they were 5:10pm, 8:10pm, and 9:45pm.

I would guess a cab one way would be about $15 but someone else will know for sure. That would be cheaper for your kids. It's about 3-4 miles. There are lots of cabs at the park exits.

Thanks for your post and welcome to the DIS!

Thanks for the shuttle schedule Mainebound. I'd imagine the schedule moves based upon park hours, etc, and we figured that 2 or 3 people sharing a cab was probably cheaper than the pp RT shuttle fee and is more "on demand". We probably won't need it, but I just like to have a plan in place should the kids stay late and we choose not to drive over and pick them up.

The WDW room prices are absurd - not that their park prices aren't as well, but that is not an avoidable part of the equation if the destination is Disney.

Oh, and welcome back to the winter that never ends. :headache:

The site run by owners is www.windsorhillsrent.com - suggest you try there first. As a newbie, not sure if we can advertise specific homes?

You could also try vrbo.com and many others. Do a google search for Windsor Hills rentals - there will be lots of rental websites. windsorhillsrent and vrbo seem to be the biggest websites.

I am having the same dilemma. On site/off site. When i look at the on site web pages I want to go there, especially with the free dining. When I look at homes in WH or Formosa garden Estates, I want to stay there. I change my mind every day. My DH comes home from work and says "where are we staying today?" Someone needs to make up my mind. Right now I am booked at the Poly w/ free dining. About to change that to SSR 1 bedroom villa. We are DH ME an DD9 and DS15.
:confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3 :confused3

Our last trip down I forgot our park tickets at home in Windsor Hills. I left my family standing at the gates of Epcot. Including the time it took me to walk to the car...drive to WHR...we're talking door-door..it was exactly 7 minutes. QUOTE]

Hey George, our best time back to Windsor Hills was 8 mins from Germany (Epcot World Showcase)!
