I bought a new PC with windows xp. I am having trouble getting rid of the little windows that keep popping up. I have blocked pop ups but it doesn't help. Is there a cure?? TIA
(just got another!!!!)

I downloaded "Pop-Up Scanner and Messenger Service Ad Stopper". I haven't gotten a popup in the last 45 seconds!! A new record! I think it worked! Thanks so much! :D

I downloaded the free Google toolbar with the pop up blocker on it. It was doing good til yesterday when I started getting 10,000 pop up's one after the other--and the web page it was sending wasnt even up. Getting them again this am so I activated my pop blocker I already had to use with my toolbar. :(

Most of the popups when first runnign XP is the messenger popups

the way to stop those is to go to the control panel, then services and double click on the messenger service and choose disable

Further on the problem with instant message popups....

This thing is activated the first time you logon to an MS Passport account, whether you ask it to or not (usually a Hotmail account). LarryE's method seems to kill it. But there are shareware programs in abundance that let you entirely remove MS Messenger from your system, a more permenant solution if you don't intend to use Messenger. Go to Yahoo, use search criteria "shareware remove ms messenger" and have a party.

As an aside to fellow tech heads, have you noticed over half the popups you get from this cute little addition to the XP OS are commercials for software to make it stop?

And as a private consultant, I ask you to keep this info to yourself. It's absolutely amazing how many small to midrange companies are willing to pay consultant fees to alleviate this problem......Shhhhh!

I am most definitely not a tech head :p but I noticed that. I just figured that it was some evil way to get computer illiterate people like me to go to the website that those popups direct us to so that they can really sock it to us.

LarryE, thanks, I did that too!

4greatboys, I think it only stops some of the pop ups because I still got them after I blocked them.

Thanks for the help! What a great resource the DIS is!

Might be a weird coincidence, but I never had a pop-up until I had XP. :(
