I have been getting Explorer errors all day, like 15 times today. Every time, I lose everyting but my background, have to use my reboot. When I reboot, I get my desktop, then it tries to read my "A" driver  This never happened before. Then I go through for a while, get an "Explorer" error and have to reboot.

I had this happen a few times before, and I had to reinstall windows each time. I have 98 SE. Is thier a way to fix this w/o reinstalling, or should I just upgrade to XP?

Brad

I was really hoping you would get a reply to this cuz I having been getting various error messages all week. Shuts my computer right down

one says:
I need to reinstall browserwise toolbar

another says :

a buffer overrun has been detected which has corrupted the programs internal state. The program cannot safely continue execution and must now be terminated.

another says: error found in unknown
not necessarily in that order

I guess I'll have to spend some time (a lot of time when you include time on hold  ) on the phone with tech support

I have Windows ME

Not sure the problem, but one advice is to not install an upgrade over an OS that is giving you a problem. I do have XP and love it, but make sure your 98 or ME is stable before you upgrade.

In order to better help you with this I am going to need more information.

What is your computer?(Make and Model please)
If you built it yourself or had people build it for you, What's the speed and processor type, how much memory, etc? (I would like as much information as possible on this)
How old is it?
XP is a more stable operating system than 98SE but I can't recommend it yet until I hear answers to the other questions first.

I have an Acer Power and it was built for us.
It is running under a Pentium III with 192.0 Megs of RAM.
We got it in January of 2000 (almost three years old), but we got a new Hard Drive in Mayish of this year, upgrading to 20 gigs.

Well judging by the age of your machine, it will not be able to handle Windows XP. (I'm assuming this will be 800 Mhz at most)

The Explorer errors are being caused by the system components. They aren't "communicating" as well as they used to.

The result of this is that Windows assumes it should reload it self (this error is a way of rebooting without rebooting - I'm sure you noticed you lost most of the icons in the system tray next to the clock when this happens)

My recomendations would be 1 of 2 things:

Upgrade to Windows 2000. This is an Operating System that is more resilient to these "reboots" The downside to this is that the operation of your PC will be slower because of your current processor.

Purchase a new PC. This will allow you to have a new set of hardware that can handle the new Operating Systems. The downside to this is that you are looking to spend around 700 not including the monitor. While they aren't my personal favorites, I would look into Dell & Gateway. Acer is no longer a PC Company.

Do you get a specific error? Is there a button that says "more info"? If you can get more information on the specific error sometimes there are specific issues that cause these. If you do have the more info button the report can get very long. The first 3 or 4 sentences are what is important. Don't paraphrase because that makes it much harder to look up.

Thank's everone! They just kinda seemed to disappear, so its that PC ghost, ya know :)

Stinks about XP, but... "Mom! Guess what!"
