Our living room has a large picture window. I need something for privacy and something for style/color. What do you use to cover your large picture window? If possible, can you post pictures?

I just got curtains for our new picture window. It's 118 inches wide. I didn't want to spend a fortune because we are going to redecorate the room in about two years. The cheapest custom drapes for the window would have been about $750, not including hardware, and that was more than I wanted to spend given the circumstances. Getting wide enough off the shelf drapes is the problem, and I also wanted them to be washable.

I got a 120 inch double rod from JCPenney. I also bought four 52"x84" Robert Eclipse back tab panels. I was able to sew two panels together to make a pair of 104" wide curtains. They came out nicely and hang well, despite my sewing job. ;)On the back rod, I hung two sheer Lisette 118" x 84" panels, also from JCP.

The total cost was reasonable--they have good sales on drapes. I used a 15% off coupon that you get from them if you do a survey to take the price down further.

If you don't care about machine washability, their Supreme pinch pleat drapes come in wide widths. I thought about doing this instead of sewing two sets together, but what I did was less expensive, saves the cost of cleaning, and since I might replace the whole thing in a few years, made more sense.

I'm very happy with how it turned out, but don't have pictures for you, sorry.

We had a large picture window in our old house-I don't remember the exact dimensions but the middle portion was something like 88" wide and two side widows were 25" wide or so. I had a valance made that went over the top of all three windows in one piece. I then had fabric "shades" made that could be raised and lowered. They were kind of an upside down tab top-had tabs at the bottom with a decorative pole through them.

I was able to reuse the same valance in our dining room bay window in this house and then there are some fabric covered blind things there already but we rarely use them as that room is in the front of the house and we aren't in there very often.

Here is what we have in our dining room now:

This is our old living room-you can just make out the tabs and poles on the bottom of the shades there-too much glare from the window.

I have Hunter Douglas Silhouettes (fabric covered blinds) for privacy. For my large windows, I have the remote control ones that open/close them and lift/lower them. Most of the time we have them open as they allow in filtered sunlight but people can't see in from the outside. I do have custom valances that I had made by a designer; they are box valances that are straight and simple. The Silhouettes are fairly expensive, I have them on every window in the house, but the valances were only +/-$200 per window, installed.

That is what they are called-no idea which brand mine are though.:lmao:

We have white sheers that we can pull across for privacy and still get light, or push back when we want full sun. Then we have curtains that we can pull across on the other part of the two-part decorative curtain rod.
