Help Please!

I need to have screens cut and installed into my windows in my apartment. We reached out to a local window store, but they apparently don't handle just screens.

I've never done this before - so unsure of where to turn to for this service? I measured the windows, but would need to get the screens and have someone install them (I imagine?) We are looking to get a cat, so need to make sure the screens are secured and in place before we can bring him / her home.

Any guidance would be appreciated!

Have you checked with your big box stores (lowes, home depot) to see if they have ready made screens that fit?

Most hardware stores will do this---or building supply stores--not Home Depot and such (but they might??), more like True Value or places like that...Ace Hardware, etc.

Any handy man (or woman) can do it. Its pretty simple actually. You only need a roll of screen mesh and a special roller tool. Screens are held in place with a rubber gasket. Remove the gasket (carefully so you don't break it). Remove torn screen. Roll new screen over frame with slight over lap. Press gasket back into "track" then roll with special tool to ensure its seated properly. Trim excess with box cutter or scissors.

If you live in an apartment, shouldnt they take care of screens?

You also need the frame. I was under the impression the OP didn't have a frame.

Lowes/Home Depot sell all you need..you can buy the frame pieces, the corners, and screen and the spline. We have cats also..we bought the pet screening, it's a little heavier duty and a little harder to install, but keeps the cats from scratching holes in it.

Your best bet for that sort of work is just to ask around and find a local handyman or someone who does odd jobs for extra income. It is simple enough that anyone reasonably handy can do it, but not big enough/profitable enough for big boxes or construction companies to bother with. If your friends or neighbors can't give you a name, check out local church bulletins, youth sports sponsorship lists, community bulletin boards, etc.

Call the landlord or management company and see if he/they will take care of it.

If that gets you nowhere, you should be able to buy screens at a hardware store.

Thanks everyone!

We own, so if we want to install screens we need to do it. We don't have the rubber gasket - the last screens in there (which were filthy and needed to be removed) had wooden frames and sort of went in like a baby gate.

I was hoping to do something a bit more permanent.

Perhaps our Super can do it...I just want it to be very secure.
