Hi - which would be more fun for new years eve? we are located near philly and could drive to either place. We enjoy Christmassy stuff, we are not into big parties - enjoy more of a family type event...advice?
My vote would be for Williamsburg. I've been several times during the summer months and always here the locals say "If you love it during the summer than you should really come back during the holidays".
We're from Maryland so the drive is about 3 1/2 hours for us. We considered going this year for the holidays but we opted to take the kids to our Nation's Capital for NY's Eve - great hotel prices and tons of sight seeing things to visit for FREE!!!
Colonial Williamsburg does a First Night thing but not sure where it's located as I think it's inside one of the buildings around the college and then they have a few fireworks at midnight (nothing like Grand Illuminations fireworks which are the first Sunday of December). I've been to Duke of Gloucester street a couple of times during NYE but it's usually a ghost town after Christmas. Would you consider going to D.C.? I think there'd be a lot more options for family stuff to do during NYE. Other than Williamsburg or maybe watching the fireworks at Downtown Norfolk at Towne Point Park there's really just a lot of the same generic stuff like other cities have with restaurants and such putting together parties.
I agree with Neverland about going to DC. Like I said in my earlier post that's where we are taking our kids. I'm not sure how old your kids are(ours are 11 & 4) or what your interest are but there is a ton of things to do in DC for free and we were able to get a great hotel rate at the Hilton Garden Inn for 89.00 for NYE and the following night. This hotel is located in the center of so much - just 3blks from the WH and 1 or 2 miles from the Smithsonian museums. This hotel has an indoor pool, restaurant and lounge. And if I'm not mistaken DC is a very nice place to ring in the New Year!
I have never been to either, so I'm sure I would like either, however if I had to pick it would be Williamsburg, hands down. This is some place we have been wanting to go for a long time, it looks so cool!
my parents live in Williamsburg, so I am going to vote for Williamsburg. We've been there in the summer as well as for Christmas and New Years, and truly, it's so beautiful there during the holidays. there's just something so festive about the simplicity of the decorations. it's so much fun walking through Colonial Village and seeing the door decorations all made of fruit and greens. Also, if you can get to a service at Bruton Parish Church, I highly recommend it. (it's right in Colonial Williamsburg) The history in that church is like nothing you've ever seen. You will see the nameplates on the pews of some of the greatest men in history.
If you want something that's very family oriented, this is my vote hands down. Also, your kids will learn alot without even realizing that they're learing something !!
If you go, try to get to dinner in one of the taverns. It's a wonderful experience...the spiced cider is not to be missed. If you choose Williamsburg, I just know you'll have a WONDERFUL time !! ( I know, I'm biased!!)
