Anyone coming to Williamsburg that has the time in their vacation should also try to do Yorktown and Jamestown. Yorktown has Yorktown Victory Center, and Jamestown has Jamestown Settlement, which are interactive like Williamsburg, but they both also have a National Park area. Yorktown has Yorktown Battlefield, where you can do a walking tour with a park ranger, but also has a CD you can buy (for about $5) which directs you around the battlefield and tells you where to get out of your car and what to explore in all the areas. Historic Jamestown is the archaeological site where they are doing the dig of the original settlement and has all sorts of neat items found in the dig as well as a reconstruction on the original foundation of the original church. Both national parks are available for 7 days for one fee and are well worth doing. Standing on the Battlefield where Cornwallis' Army surrendered and seeing the artillery surrendered there will give you chills. Yorktown National Cemetery is a Civil War cemetery located on the battlefield and is also worth seeing. My 8 yr old insists on bringing flowers to the grave of an ancestor that is buried there every time she gets a chance.
Also, anyone coming to Williamsburg should let us locals know when you are going to be around--we might be able to do a meet!
