We are hopefully headed to Williamsburg area for the long Easter Weekend. Any helpful tips on what not to miss, what not to bother spending money on, etc.? Hoping to do Williamsburg one day, Jamestown/Yorktown one day and Busch Gardens. Should we buy more than 1 day for Williamsburg or do you think we can do everything in 1 day? And am I understanding the Busch Garden tickets correctly in that a 1 day pass is the same price as the rest of the summer season ticket? If so, I think maybe we can hit that a night or 2 and then do the full day of Easter. This is supposed to be a mini-vacation, so don't want to break the bank!

The "Fun Card" which is $63.99 is good for admission for the person whose name is on the ticket from now through September 5, 2001. Not a bad deal if you think you'll get to the area a few times this summer.

Do you have kids that are "touring" with you? I haven't really "done" W'burg in a few years, but I think you could do it in one day. Hopefully someone will come along and answer that a little better.

The Jamestown/Yorktown could be done in a day too but there is a bit of drive between the two that would need to be accounted for. If I had to drop one, it'd be Yorktown.

If you do a search, there have been quite a few BG/W'burg threads lately that have a lot of info.

I could be wrong, but I think the Fun Card is for Virginia residents only. I'M WRONG, I JUST LOOKED IT UP. SORRY.

You can buy a bounce pass, which is good for BG and CW for seven consecutive days. They are available only online, at BG website and CW website. It costs around $100 per person for 7 days unlimited visits (you can go to CW in the am, then BG in the pm, and the pass includes parking. The great thing is children under 6 are free, which is a significant savings over paying for BG alone, since at BG they charge admission for ages 3+. We went last summer and had a wonderful time taking our time and going at our own pace. Choose to see what sounds fun to you and you won't go wrong. We enjoyed the blacksmith in CW and the Fifes and Drums parade.

Don't get the "dining plan" at Busch (if they even offer it still). They started doing it a few years ago, and it's not a deal (this is from someone who is local and goes many times every summer).

DO get one of the refillable cups in the park. They aren't very much, and you can get them refilled cheaply throughout the park all day.

Tickets I have no idea; I've gotten myself a season pass every year since I was old enough to drive.

Do prepare for the weather. It has been hot and cool here lately; Monday it was nearly 90, currently it is 67 with 55% humidity, and tomorrow's estimate is 67 with 61% humidity. It's not August humid yet, but it has the potential to be. You need to be prepared for both hot and warm.

Finally, and most importantly, do have a great time. :)

Just was at Busch Gardens this past Saturday. I would recommend taking a picnic lunch if at all possible. You can't take into the park but the picnic areas are pretty close. The only decent thing we ate was the corn dogs at the Pig in a Kilt by the stables. Definitely not the best theme park food. The pizza was way worse than WDW ever is. LOL

Make sure you stop at the stables and see the new baby. Didn't know Clydsdales could be any color than brown with white hooves. The baby is gray and cute as can be.

Thanks for the replies. My kids are 13, 10 and 8 if that helps any. Looking at all these combo tickets are making me a little cross-eyed, but they all seem to be about the same price, just slightly different things. For example, if I buy 2day Williamsburg tickets and the Fun Card BG tickets, it will be $460.70. If I buy the bounce tickets it will be $463.60. The Fun card tickets would be nice if I thought we may get back to the area this summer. If the bounce pass does include parking, they may be our best bet, I did not see it included in the description, are you sure it is included? Do I have to buy it from the BG site to get the parking?

I think we will have 4 full days in the area Thurs-Sun, traveling on Wed and Monday.

Anyone else have any helpful or moneysaving tips?

Imo, the only good place at Busch to eat is at the Smokehouse (I've been known to drive up for dinner there and catch an evening show).

In the past, I would assume it is true this year also, the only people who didn't have to pay for parking were season pass members. I don't know for sure, you may want to call and check. It does list the fun card on the page with the seasons passes now (it hasn't in the past). This may be a new thing this year (the park changed hands in 2009). Every time I've had to pay for parking in the past because my pass was expired, I was able to receive a refund by visiting guest services after purchasing the new pass.

If you do have to pay for parking, don't pay for preferred. There is a tram that runs regularly (you'll wait less than 5 mins for it to come around; usually it's only 2-3) for it to pick you up.

As a previous poster mentioned, there are picnic tables throughout the parking lot (usually they are pretty shaded), so if you want to pack a lunch it is doable. Whatever you do, don't eat in Das Festhaus. Everyone who doesn't know better picks that place to eat because it's the only restaurant inside in the AC. The food reflects it.

If your family eats fast food, usually Hardee's has Busch coupons on their bags. Sometimes Wendy's does too. They are usually $10-15 off tickets. I haven't picked up any food from them lately, so I am not sure if they're running any deals right now. I do know that many of the local Food Lions and Bottom Dollars have $15 off coupons too (I saw them at Food Lion just this weekend); usually you just have to ask the customer service desk.

They have a fastpass system, BUT you have to pay for it. If I remember correctly it's pricey (I want to say it was like $20 a head). When they came out with it I was like, "I can do that at Disney for free." You purchase the pass at customer service when you enter the park, and they give you a little badge to show the line attendants at the rides. It's up to you if it will work for you or not. Busch is easily toured in one day without it because there are going to be things you'll look at on the map and know your family won't want to do. My suggestion would be to hit the coasters early in the day (if that's what your family likes) and then loop back to do the other things.

The theater in Ireland where they do the Irish ethnic dance show is very cramped. If anyone in your family is claustrophobic, he or she will not like it.

You may want to look outside of Williamsburg for food/things to do too. I don't know your entire itinerary, so that may or may not be possible. The Busch Gardens area of Williamsburg is only an hour from the VA Beach oceanfront, and there is a ton of stuff to do from Williamsburg to the beach. Usually, you will find cheaper (and often times better) food outside the tourist trap area right around Busch and colonial Williamsburg/Jamestown.

I haven't been to Jamestown in years. The last time I went was right after they discovered the old fort and the archaeologists were there excavating. I keep saying I'll go back in the fall (it's beautiful then), but I never seem to make it up there. It's a catch 22 on when to visit them, if you go on the weekend there are lots of tourists, and if you go during the week there are usually school groups. Pick your poison.

My number 1 suggestion (assuming you will have a vehicle while here) is stay off I64 near rush hour during the week. It will be gridlock city.

You may or may not have enough time for this to get mailed to you, but you should pick up:

The coupons in them are usually pretty good. Obviously, look at them with speculation, some are great deals and some aren't (as with any coupon book).

Feel free to PM me questions if you have specifics. The area is where I've lived all my life, so I probably have the answer to many of your questions.

Just an FYI (you may know), there are two Jamestowns and two Yorktowns. Each has a national park (that is really just the historic area, there are a few displays, I think) and then a recreated place (with the fort, ships, village, reinactments...) The later is Jamestown Settlement and Yorktown Victory Center.

I'm in the minority in not liking Williamsburg. We also went in April (same week, though it wasn't Easter) and I found we had to pull the guides into any sort of interaction. (This is coming from someone who majored in colonial history, I really wanted to like it!)

JS and YVC though, we LOVED. Great interactive exhibits and demonstrations. You can definately do both in a day, but if for whatever reason, you can't- I'd devote part of a second day to that vs. Williamsburg.
