Our trip is only 6 weeks away and I am getting more and more excited every day. I have kids with very fair skin. One red-head and one blondie. They have never had a tan and we use sunscreen all summer long. Do you think I should lather them up each day during Nov/Dec just to be safe?

I've been thinking about the same thing. I really like the continuous spray sunscreen, but it's pressurized in that can. I don't know if I can fly with it... and I'm sure, if it's sold at Disney, it's way overpriced. At least they won't be in swimsuits everyday. We'll only need to do faces, arms, and legs...

According to my dermatologist you should wear sunscreen 365 days a year. You can still get the "bad" rays when it's cloudy. I wear it religiously and at the parks I also wear a visor!

I think everyone should always wear sunscreen. (I'm a bit of a fanatic; have had two relatives in their 20s get melanoma.) Regardless of the time of year, even on cloudy days, you should wear sunscreen!

Try the Neutrogena continuous spray. It's very light, not at all sticky or goopy - you feel like you have no sunscreen on, but it really works well. (I tried the Coppertone spray last year and that stuff is like cement - I had to scrub and scrub with a soapy washcloth to get it off. I hated it! But the Neutrogena brand is great!)

Yes take sunscreen. I am very fair skinned and I used Ocean Potion waterproof SPF 30 during my trip in May. And since it was waterproof & sweat proof there was no need to reapply during the day. Meaning one less thing to take into the parks :thumbsup2 My friend used the No-Ad spray from Wal-mart that had Ariel on the bottle and it worked great and stayed on all day as well and her 4 y/o son loved the spray ;)
I agree with Amyg wear a visor. The FL sun can be harsh and sometimes sunglasses don't provide all the protection needed for your eyes. Don't forget sunglasses for your children as well. Have a great trip

Thanks for all the great advice everyone. I have read the threads about babies being beat red during the summer, but I just didn't know about the middle of winter. :confused3

Thanks to all your words of wisdom, we won't be taking any chances.

34 days and counting.

I have seen many, many burned kids during the winter. I really don't know what people are thinking - those poor kids! The sun is probably just as hard on your skin in the winter, since you have no base tan to partially protect it (assuming you're from the North). You won't need sunscreen for as many hours, as the sun will set around 5-6 PM. But it is strong enough between the hours of 10 or 11 AM to 3 or 4 PM to need it.:sunny:

Definitely! All year round, no matter where you live. (Can you tell I'm fair-skinned?) I second Zo Zo's recommendation for Neutrogena, btw.

DW has already put ours in the suitcase. She will be lathering us both (DS and I) so we don't get burned.

Even when you aren't getting burned, you are getting UVA -- AGING rays. I wear SS daily under my makeup. Research shows the best anti-aging meausure we can take is ss!

For those of you south of the border this is not much of a big deal but you can get too much of a good thing. Up in Canada our hours of sunlight are greatly reduced in the winter. People have become such diligent users of sunscreen that they are starting to notice a huge increase in Vitamin D deficiencies. I am not a big milk drinker and am allergic to fish and eggs so I have very few choices for Vitamin D except to supplement. If you use sunscreen 365 days a year you should be tested for Vitamin D deficiency.

The sun is very lethal . We dont go anywhere without sunscreen and I live in the NE. We know several people who have passed away at an early age from skin cancer. Our friends were younger than 50. The misconception is ,if you don't lay out by a pool or beach all day, you don't need sunscreen. You get UV exposure every day . One of our dearly departed friends was an avid gardener, the other a golfer. I also have a friend who has eye cancer. You can get melanoma in your eye, so you have to also protect your eyes with sunglasses. We wear it all year round and it's a good habit to get into. My dermatologist says there's no such thing as a good tan. I come back from Caribbean and South American vacations ,as pale as the day I left. I also look about 15 years younger than most my age , thanks to many years of wearing sunscreen . :)

iam glad that i have read this thread i wasn't going to bother to bring suncream due to other threads that i have read about the weather in dec, been advised to wear fleeces and have layers to wear then takeoff.
coming from scotland we presumed that the weather would be like a scottish summer not that hot.
thanks for the advice everyone

Do a google search on skin cancer rates in Scotland and you'll find this:

Melanoma incidence for those living near the equator, in regions in New Zealand, Australia and Scotland more than doubled over the past 8 years.

I wear sunscreen all the time, even to the most dreariest weather place I've visited....Ireland ! It was cloudy, rainy, misty and I still wore sunscreen in Ireland ! Do yourself and your children a favor and please use sun protection at all times.

We put suncream on everyday during the summer months but thats about it we don't need it in the winter here because its thats cold and you have layers of clothes on. and there is only a few hours of sunlight or the rare occasion that the sun does appear.

thanks anyway for your advice!!!!

you should ALWAYS use sunscreen, EVERYDAY, no matter where you are. Sun exposure is dangerous, no matter what time of year it is.

so YES...sunscreen at WDW in the winter! :thumbsup2
