I found this great 28 inch long rolling duffle bag and I was wondering if US Airways is really strict about carry on bags?? I wouldn't want to check it in because it's soft sided (of course being a 'duffle' bag it would be) and I have stuff that might break if it's tossed under alot of other baggage or not handled carefully.
Do you think they will let me carry it on??
Thanks for any help.

I highly doubt you'll be allowed to carry someting that large on, unless the flight was practically empty.

IMHO it would also not be fair to your fellow passengers as it would take up almost a full overhead bin--way too long to fit "wheels in" in the overhead.

FWIW, I've checked soft sided duffels many times with no problem.

Hi Anne,I didn't think using that as a carry on would be possible.Though I have seen xtra large bags being carried on by other people.
I always check all my bags in but this time I'm bringing some stuff I'm afraid might bend or break in transit.Or even worse...not arrive at my destination at all.I know we all go thru these fears when we travel.I'll just have to hope for the best.
Thanks.

If what you are bringing isn't too large do what I did at Christmas with something fragile. I took a Rubbermade container that fit inside my soft suitcase and put the well wrapped and padded item inside. Arrived safe and sound, non crushed.

Hey that's a good idea! I'll have to pick up a couple of those containers.
Thanks!

I would hope not. A 28" is probably NOT going to fit in the overhead. That is why they have those measurements.

Yup and here is the baggage policy for US Airways:

Carry-on baggage
"In addition to one carry-on bag, customers may bring one personal item, which includes a purse, briefcase, laptop or diaper bag. US Airways permits carry-on baggage of up to 51 inches (11x14x26). US Airways Express flights accommodate carry-on baggage of up to 45 inches (19x15x11). You must check all larger baggage."

Mines a little bigger than the largest carry on they allow.Their carry on bag allowance is one big bag! That's all I can say.I think my normal size suitcase is that size!

I once brought a large duffle with a HUGE Rubbermaid bin full of five dozen Tim Horton's Donuts back from Calgary, CA. They survived with absolutely no problem.

The look on the Customs agents face when he asked if I was bringing any food back with me and I told him "Five Dozen Tim's" was priceless. :lmao:

Just something unfair but true to keep in mind. If you are last to board on a full flight, your perfectly sized carry on may not have a space and you could be forced to check it. I like to board earlier in the process to prevent that from happening, but if you have breakables, keep a plan B to remove them before being forced to gate check your bag!

Good luck!

Yeah that is very true.I've seen people who board first put their carry on in a front bin and then go sit in the back. But any hoot (like Hannathy suggested) I plan on buying some rubbermaid containers to put my breakables in to protect them in my suitcase.Such a good idea!!
Actually I think a gate forced check-in of your luggage is better because it's waiting for you on the jet way as soon as you step off the plane.I like that!!
Totally bypass baggage claim.Mmmm.Sounds like a plan!!
No,just kidding...

Just make sure you pad the stuff well because it will keep it from getting crushed but not thrown, dropped, thrown, dropped, repeat several more times, slammed(remember the Samsonite commercial with the apes) generally man-handled by the luggage folks!

Oh yeah.I've had new luggage come off that belt before looking like it got beat up.Certainly did not look new anymore....holes,scratches,scrapes,dents here and there. It looked like it got thrown on the ground, dragged and stomped on.....
It seems like the luggage folks are taking their frustrations out on my luggage!
Oh well I guess we all just have to be well prepared for anything.

Only wheel chairs and strollers. Other luggage that's gate checked is generally sent to the carousel with the rest of the checked bags.

Oh really?I would swear every time I step off a plane there's luggage sitting there for people who's luggage was confiscated at the jetway...
Mmm.Maybe it was just strollers and such....

It's possible some airlines, sometimes, might return gate checked luggage to the jetway but don't count on it. It doesn't make sense to lug a large bag through security to the gate area only to have your bag gate checked and then sent to the carousel at your destination.

Only strollers. Unless you're on a regional jet, gate checked bags are sent to the baggage claim area just like everything else.
