Will this work?

I am new to DVC and had a question about changing a reservation. I currently have a room booked for Copper Creek from February 23-March 1. I would like to change it to the Polynesian at 7 months out, but I only have 94 points remaining, and I don’t want to borrow points. I am most concerned about availability for the night of the 23rd because of the Princess Half Marathon on the morning of the 24th. If I book just the first couple days at the Polynesian when the 7 month booking window opens, can I call MS when it opens to cancel Copper Creek and book the rest of the Polynesian stay?

Sounds like that will work. Though you could still have some book your missing days if they want a similar booking. Good luck. I like to think outside the box sometimes.

If it doesn't work, then ask to be waitlisted, immediately, for any missing days.

I think this should work, because probably the most difficult nights to get are the firsts of the reservation you want. There will be less rooms available at 7 months for the nights of the 23rd and 24th than from the 25th forward. So if you secure the first two, there rest of the vacation would be safe. It wouldn't work the other way around.
That said, fingers crossed for you, but race week ends are always very difficult to book at 7 months, it won't be easy to switch.

You can do what you plan as long as the Poly studio is still open at 7 months out for those first two nights -- we are now entering the period of time at 7 months+ out from that weekend where anything still open for that weekend could easily disappear via those reserving Feb 20 or 21 start dates because many want to reserve that weekend with a Wednesday or Thursday start date. Poly should be open at 7 months out for all days after the marathon.

This might be crazy but I wonder if this can be done. If one year I want to go to a non home resort, can I for safely book my home resort with this years points at 11 months then try the 7 month booking using borrowed points. If I get the 7 month booking I could release the points for my home resort and bank them for my next year vacation at my home resort. I am new to DVC so I am still learning. I guess I need to know if you can move points around more than once for this to work.

Yes, if you book a new reservation at 7 months with borrowed points and then cancel the 11 month reservation, providing you are still within your banking window, you can bank those points into the UY you borrowed from. The only drawback of this situation is that if you had to cancel the trip, those borrowed points would be stuck, since borrowing is a final transaction.

When you book, they will always use banked points first, then current UY points, and then borrow to complete reservation. Everything is based on UY of the trip, not when you call, so keep that in mind. There is a lot of flexibility in terms of how you book, as long as you are clear that both banking/borrowing are final transactions and cant be reversed.

I have one more follow up question that has probably been answered many times on these boards, so I apologize in advance. My original Copper Creek reservation is using banked 2017 points. If I book the first few nights at the Polymesian using my 2018 points, will MS be able to change those to the banked 2017 Points when I call them to cancel Copper Creek and finish the rest to the Polynesian reservation?

They should be able to make the change from regular to banked CCV points but I am not sure whether you need to complete your full reservation first (after which they should definitely be able to make the switch of points) or can do it as part of making the addition to your two day reservation.

Just be aware that, as I mentioned, your probability of being able to get February 23 is falling as Feb 21 and 22 have filled today. What that likely means is that there is very little availability still left for the 23d and it could disappear tomorrow or at the latest at exactly 8 a.m. on July 23.
