Will this end up being the pandemic that cried wolf?

I invite you to travel to New York and tell me how much of an overreaction the last month has been. Maybe in smaller, rural areas it’s easy to believe we’ve been “crying wolf,” but in cities like New York and Portland and Detroit and Pittsburgh, the threat is very real and many, many, many people are dying.

It’s not a reality that people are willing to accept.

We don't have everyone living in tin can world, ie. NYC metro. The rest of the nation has private car travel. Crime and suicides are now a thing direct from the shutdowns. Financial health and mental health are important. Reality is most everyone is going to get it over time. We've sucked at viral issues. Hiv is not curable. Flu is not cured either.

Keeping the train of sick steady so Healthcare can cope. But don't sacrifice America into bread lines.

Is the NYC metro the only public transit system in the world? Am I imagining my city bus?

Ok.

Anyone know whether the following image used by the Wall Street Journal was truly from today?

I say if that is truly representative of many Texans’ opinions, then just open it all up there. I’ll just hope that my state restricts travel originating from TX.

In Sweden-
1) no quarantine
2) low death rates
3) no crisis in ICU’s even though less per capital beds than US
4) population has more widespread immunity going forward

Sweden made smart decisions that were very unpopular with the western international media. The western media (and their favored “experts”) predicted calamity in Sweden that just didn’t happen. I don’t think there is any question that apocalyptic forecasts are dear to the heart of the media.

In recent history a new significant Coronavirus mutation appeared say once per decade and novel significant flu mutation less frequently. The Spanish flu, Hong Kong flu, and H1N1 come to mind in last 100 years. The pandemic flu’s though attack younger age groups including children. With global population still growing and urbanization ongoing at an increased rate more and more people are living closer and closer together so ever increasing opportunities for these viruses to mutate and transmit.

If you liked this stay at home period you are fortunate since likely not long before the next significant viral mutation arises and transmits. A reasonable expectation is that they will appear more frequently in the future.

Umm, relatively small amount of people. Plus this was lead by a guy who thinks Sandy Hook was a hoax to take away our guns. So there's that.

I think most Texans are ok with Abbott's slower, measured response. Some people are just crazy.

Yes. Texas has a population of nearly 20,000,000, three of the top ten metropolitan areas in US by population, two of the top ten international airports, and a total of 500 deaths.

I dont know what her state is and so if any Texans would even want to travel there but on a strictly statistical basis probably more likely to die from this virus there than in Texas. On a purely statistical basis I would advise them not to travel there since more risk elsewhere than In Texas.

I'm surprised how many people don't know/remember this - the aim of flattening the curve was never to prevent every death.
You are right.

Many do not seem to realize that the area under a flattened curve is the same as the area under an unflattened curve. If the area under the curve represents death there will be just as many in a flattened curve scenario spread out over a much longer period.

Watching the people protest against social distancing in many states and seeing people flock to the Florida beaches has me wondering if the next time in the near future there is another potential pandemic will people comply and social distance?
“If in the near future there is another pandemic”

What about this pandemic? These idiots protesting without masks and partying on the beaches will soon be statistics. Once people head outdoors again there will be a resurgence in cases of infection. I hope they enjoy their time on a ventilator with a tube down their throats.

I live in the suburbs where every family had multiple cars, residents are dying every day. The virus got here most likely due to nyc commuters, but we’ve been on lockdown for more than a month. If and when things open up, it’s just going to spread.

No, if it’s not flattened people will die needlessly because hospitals will get overwhelmed. I’ve heard about many who ended up surviving when no one thought they would. I know of a 49 year old man on a vent who started improving with a treatment involving placenta cells.

It didn’t happen in Sweden with no quarantine and they have less ICU beds per capita than the US. It sure didn’t happen in Texas with late quarantine and now early opening.

Same with Florida.
It’s funny the hysterical reaction about re opening beaches in Florida. The safest place in the world for protection from this virus is a beach. It is destroyed almost immediately by UV light and if that somehow doesn’t kill it then the combination of temperature and humidity will. If you wanted to organize a Coronavirus safe haven best place to put it would be on a Florida beach
