Will Rock n' Roller Coaster be too intense for me?

I can be a pretty big wuss when it comes to rides! But I feel I have come a long way - I've now done all of the "thrill" rides at Disney except for Rock n' Roller Coaster. On my first trip, I only did Big Thunder Mountain, and somehow, my friend convinced me to get on Tower of Terror with her! I totally loved Big Thunder and I wasn't scared at all. TOT wasn't awful, but falling/drops has always been my biggest fear with rides. I did enjoy myself (since my friend was with me...I'm sure I would have been terrified if I had been on it alone!) and I came off smiling and glad that I did it. At the same time, I'm not planning to ride it again this trip because I just don't really LOVE falling and dropping like that. Plus I worry that I'll get one of the bad drop sequences (I was okay last time when it only dropped us about 4 times, but I've heard it can potentially go up to 7 or 8 times which I know would be too much for me!)

But anyway, I rode Expedition Everest and Space Mountain this trip and I did okay on both. However, I definitely did find both of them somewhat "intense" and I can say I was a little bit "scared" on both of them - but not enough to where I was genuinely terrified and wasn't enjoying myself. I came off of both with a smile on my face. I did find Everest quite intense, and I think part of why I did so well on it was because once it gets "scary" (when you go backwards) it all happens so fast that you don't have much time to process what's going on and get scared :) I admit that I was screaming "holy crap!" as we went backwards and I looked like an idiot on the on-ride photo that it snapped as we went down the drop - my eyes were shut and and my mouth was wide open screaming! But I thought the ride was super cool, and again, I was SO happy and proud of myself when I got off.

Space Mountain wasn't that bad, but I think I was taken by surprise because I wasn't expecting it to feel so fast. I know it only goes 25 mph but it seemed WAY faster (honestly, it seemed almost as fast as Everest to me! but not quite). The ride was pretty jerky and the curves were really sharp! And I was honestly a little freaked out by the dark at the beginning, because I really couldn't see where we were going. This definitely was my first ever "dark" roller coaster ride. But after the first couple of turns/drops I did just start to relax a little and just have fun. I was actually smiling in the on-ride photo! :) I was pretty much screaming the whole time but not as much as on Everest. Basically, when I'm on Thunder Mountain I just yell "whoooo!" but I actually did some pretty real screaming on Tower of Terror and Everest! And on Space, it was a combination of both! XD

And I can definitely say that I would ride both Everest and Space again. And I really think that maybe Space wouldn't be as scary the second time around since I know more what to expect.

But since I WAS a little spooked by the darkness on SM, I'm having second thoughts about Rock n' Roller Coaster. I was already afraid to do it because I've never been on any roller coaster with inversions. Like I said, heights, dropping, and falling (which I know RNR doesn't have) is my biggest fear and maybe inversions aren't as bad, but I think it's just a fear of the unknown. And I know RnR goes even faster than Everest (though I'm pretty sure the speed combined with the backwards motion/sharp turns was what made the other two feel more intense - speed itself doesn't really scare me). And I'm really just wondering how much more intense RnR coaster is than Everest. I kind of feel like Everest may be my "limit" when it comes to coasters, so does that mean I should skip RnR coaster? But at the same time, I know it has a lot of different elements (pretty much just high speeds and inversions from my understanding - no sharp turns, jerkiness, or drops, right?). And again, even though fairly small drops and sharp turns don't really scare me when I can see them coming, it was definitely scarier in the dark. I even noticed that when I rode Big Thunder Mountain again this trip, it seemed wilder than I remembered (I wasn't scared by it and didn't feel that it was really intense...again, just that it seemed a bit crazier than what I remembered) and I think this must have been because I rode it at night when it was dark, as opposed to in broad daylight like last time.

So I'm kind of apprehensive about going upside down and not even knowing it's coming, when I haven't even done it in the light yet! On one hand, I would hate to miss Rock n' Roller coaster since the theme is so awesome and I'd love to be able to say I've done everything at Disney. But on the other hand, I don't want to ride anything that will truly terrify me or make me feel like I'm going to die! Will I find it to be too scary if I was a little scared by Everest and Space?

For me, the most intense part of that ride is the beginning. After that, the rest of it is pretty tame (in my opinion).

Part of the thrill is the unknown - I think you should give it a go. What's the worst that could happen?

I genuinely find Everest far worse than RnRC :rotfl: I think the worst bit is being able to see the launch on RnRC as you're queueing, since it makes you nervous for it and it's really fast, but that is by far the worst part, and you said you're fine with speed :)
The inversions are perfect for a first timer - very smooth and not too many of them. I say go for it! :thumbsup2

My OH can cope with the mountains no problem. But he's done RnR twice and hated it both times.

It's the acceleration that gets him - the loops etc he can cope with but he feels like he's having a heart attack on take off! Even for a thrill ride junkie like me, I acknowledge it's intense. But it only lasts three seconds so even if you do hate it, it's over fast :)

I was a bit of a wuss myself..... but I slowly worked my way thru all the rides.

I find Expedition Everest and ToT to be more intense than Rockin Roller Coaster.

One thing I really like about RnR is the restraint system makes me feel safe
I kept my eyes shut in the beginning but now I keep them open to enjoy the visual effects.

I love the sound of Steven Tyler screaming out the countdown just before the ride BLASTS forward!!

You should definitely go for it!

~RnRC was my last coaster to try out! I put it off for several years, I don't know why I allowed it to psych me out. I rode all of the coasters at Cedar Point & Kings Island, lol. :lmao:

~Anyway, RnRC has a very short ride duration at 1:22 -- in contrast, Space Mountain is 2:35. By the time you realize that you've gone upside down it's over! I agree with others that the launch is the most intense part. Have fun! :cool1:

I would not worry about the inversion, you may not even realize it happened! However, that launch really takes your breath away!

Is there a youtube video you can watch to get a tiny idea of the ride? I have written it off my list but I do enjoy everest and the others. Last time I rode it, I walked off saying to myself, "Ok..won't be doing that again". I'm sure it has to do with being on the backside of 50 and not fear, but you have to do what is best for you.

It won't kill you. But you might be intimidated. Maybe ride it once to see.

Definitely ride it! I like it way better than SM and Everest. It's a smooth ride and the music really makes it fun. The blast off is my favorite part. I think you will come off this ride smiling! Have fun!!

I think RnR and Everest are the most intense of the Disney rides, but are still low relative to other theme parks. RnR isn't so much fast overall, as the launch is a very sudden burst of speed. I think if you are willing to do Everest and SM again and proud of yourself for those, RnR may be right up your alley. Even though RnR is dark, there are lots of neon signs that make it very different from SMs darkness in my opinion. And you're right that the drops of ToT are not present on RnR at all.

I will do RNR but not TOT so I think your fine. Like people said....the beginning is the worst part of it. Then its just coasting.

RIDE IT! If you heed the advice given to you by others you should be just fine and enjoy yourself! It is too good of a themed attraction to miss!

TIPS:
-Keep your head back against theseat at the launch
-Keep your eyes OPEN! The visual effects will really help with your nerves.

The inversions are not bad at all. There are only a few and are very smooth. There are also no major drops like on Everest.

So go ahead and have fun!!! :cool1:

Exactly! The beginning is always a little intense, gets my heart rate up. But after the ride is going I actually find it a little relaxing - I know that's weird, but it is very enjoyable as opposed to nerve racking.

I love roller coasters (EE is my favorite at Disney) and I love ToT as well, but won't ride RnR anymore. I don't find it scary at all but I always walk off with a headache and feeling sick. I make sure to keep my head back at the beginning but it throws my head around throughout the whole ride and I don't find it enjoyable at all. My DH loves it so he rides single rider. The take off is intense but I don't find the rest of it scary. If you did alright going backwards on EE I think you'd do fine on RnR. Just depends on if it would bother you physically or not. I think it's worth trying once to see.

~This is great advice! The same tips above can also be applied to Mission Space! :goodvibes

Thanks! And yes I agree about Mission Space. I love that attraction! I am blessed to not suffer from motion sickness, a fear of heights or any of those things. I always feel bad when people say they have bad motion sickness and can't ride Mission Space. It's wonderfully themed and it's a pity anyone would have to miss out on it!

I guess I'm in the minority here, but I find RnRC way more intense than everest or Space Mountain. I'll typically ride any thrill ride - and will try anything once, but that launch sequence is just too much for me. It feels like my heart is going to explode in my chest.

The rest of the ride is completely fine. Like others have said, the inversions are pretty mild and it rides really smooth.

Have you done the orange side of mission space? If you can stand the blast off on that ride, then you can handle the launch sequence on RnRC. But it's pretty serious stuff.

Put your head back, and take a deep breath before the countdown ends (it's hard to breathe during that initial acceleration). Once you launch, it's really just a fun, smooth ride. The dark isn't really dark, since there is so much neon lighting the way. You can see all of the upcoming turns, so it's nothing like space mountain (and I find it to be a far more enjoyable ride than SM as well - much smoother). The start is intense, but the rest of the ride is not bad at all - just listening to some good music as you cruise through the city. ;)

I love coasters, I'm a huge thrill junky, my friends think I'm insane, I've never not loved an intense ride. I've even gone skydiving and ziplining multiple times. That said, I still get anxious sitting in RnRC waiting for the launch, that's the only part of the ride that makes me a bit iffy, and I do that on all launched coasters. Invariably I love it every time though! You will be fine if you can deal with the short (though it feels long) wait for the launch.

As far as the inversions go, they're very fluid, and very brief, I've been on the ride a dozen times and I still am not 100% sure where they are. You won't really see them coming unless you're in the front seat, it's too dark, and even in the front you only get a split second warning. By the time your ears tell you that you're inverted, you're coming out of it. I wouldn't give it a moment's thought!

Matt
