will razor scooters be useful

I will be carrying too much weight to bring down 4 bikes and my pop-up so I'm wondering about the Razor scooters. They pack easily and aren't as heavy. I've never been to FW before and am curious if they will be appropriate there. Are the roads paved or dirt? Everyone suggests bikes or golf carts but I'll be there for almost 2 weeks and don't want the added expense of renting bikes. My DD are 10 and 13 so I could let them go by themselves. Thoughts, suggestions????

The roads are paved but I wouldn't want my kids riding their scooters on them - I would be afraid they would get flattened by a bus But they could ride them on the bike/golf cart paths and sidewalks. Now I am not sure if riding scooters on the sidewalks is considered "legal" by Disney rules but I saw several kids doing it. Your camping loop will also be paved and should have relatively little traffic so that would be another place the girls could ride. I would bring their scooters but I think that they would really have more fun with the bikes. Maybe you could just rent the bikes for a few days for the girls and let them use the scooters the rest of the time.

My kids took their razor scooters and helmets, but we didn't take the knee pads. Now they both have badly bruised knees from riding them at FW. The reason is that the paths are like side walks.....blocks of cement with cracks between each block. My kids were not use to that (here they can ride on the drive way in on the street during the day when there is hardly any traffic in our neighborhood.

When you hit one of those 'cracks' you have to hold the handle bar with both hands to keep it from twisting. My husband handled it fine, but the girls apparently did not 'get' it because they both crashed and banged up their knees really bad. They never got to go swimming because of this.

SO, if you ask me, I would say if you bring them make sure you bring ALL the protective gear. OR just leave them at home. We won't be taking them again, next time we are going to stay in the cabins instead of camp and bring bikes with us.

Thank you for the great detailed info about scooter-ing at Ft Wilderness. And I'm so glad the OP asked the question. I was wondering the same thing as the scooters take up relatively little room & would be much cheaper than renting bikes, but now I feel I can make a much better informed decision. Would have hated to have argued with my husband over packing them in the jam-packed van & then have the experience westjones had!

We took the kid's scooters and bikes and to me it seemed that they used the scooters more. They would use them to go to the comfort stations and to the store. I made sure they wore their helmets all the time. People driving around FW, including the buses drive very slow and seem to be aware of people on bikes, scooters and walking.

Have a great time - we just got back from 2 weeks at FW - definately the way to go (although it was a bit cramped in the popup). However, I'd do it again in a minute!!!
