Most financially successful animated film...

(as measured in Box Office $ sales - both foreign and domestic).

Finding Nemo is tracking along a curve that projects into the stratosphere of more than $300 Million in domestic ticket sales.

Looking at upcoming movies there are really only a couple that share the same audiences as Nemo - and they just aren't that interesting.

So, will Nemo lose it's steam and stall out at #3, or go past Monsters into #2, or (heaven forbid :-) go right on past The Lion King into the top spot?

Personally I give it a 50/50 shot at #1...

Any indication yet of the number of repeat viewers? I think that is what will put Nemo over the top. If this up coming weekend total puts them over 200 mil, I think it has a realistic shot at #1

My own best guess puts it shy of the Lion King in total domestic numbers, but #1 is a real possibility. Nemo is tracking better than Monsters so far and it has less competition ahead. Of course, Monsters got a second boost from the Christmas/New Years holiday.

I'm personally expecting a total very close to Lion King's original domestic run of $312 million, but below the $328 total after the IMAX rerelease. So, my vote is a strong 2nd place showing.

It's worth pointing out that this is ignoring the ticket price inflation between 1994 and present. With adjustments for inflation, Lion King is well over $400 million in today's dollars (clearly out of reach!).

Just to be clear, worldwide, Aladdin is actually the 3rd highest grossing film, followed by TS2 and then Shrek.

Domestic:

Lion King $328 million
Shrek $267 million
Monsters $255 million
Toy Story 2 $245 million
Aladdin $217 million

Worldwide:

Lion King $789 million
Monsters $529 million
Aladdin $502 million
Toy Story 2 $485 million
Shrek $482 million

Domestically, Nemo seems to be a cinch to pass Aladdin, and probably even the next $20 million to pass Shrek. Lion King could be close, though Mouse Ears makes a good point about adjusting for inflation when judging the totals.

Worldwide, catching The Lion King is going to be a very tall order...

I dont think it'll have the repeat customer. It was a great film hilarious and great for dads BUT I just thought it missed something. what i don't know. I recommed it to everyone i talk to about it, but wouldnt see it again till dvd.

I don't think'll catch Lion King. there are alot of kids movies coming out soon. I cant guess where itll end up. maybe right where shrek and Monsters is at

Well with the estimates for the weekend the model says that Nemo will be able to pass Shrek in Domestic box office eventually - but it's not going to make it past Lion King for the #1 spot (so we won't need to argue about which inflation rate to use to compare them :-)

Now I wonder how it'll play in Tokyo?

Well if you are adjusting for inflation, "Gone With the Wind" is number 1 at over $800 million. ( i didn't want to be left out of the conversation)

I think the debate was on animated films, not films in general. Probably alot would beat it in just the general genre of film.

I disagree on the "repeat" mentioned above- I think there will be a lot of repeat seeing of this movie. We've already seen it twice and I know others that have too (like my sister- just had to take the girls she babysits therefore went again with her kids also).

I know it's a movie my kids are chomping at the bit for it to hurry and come out on video so we can buy it and watch it a bazillion times at home. That's why we've seen it at the movies twice already! LOL
