Will January be all used up?

After reading many threads citing the popularity of the idea of "retiring" during winter months to a WDW retreat, I wonder... will DVC have to shift its scaling for January points (currently among the lowest point values) to suddenly reflect high demand? Gee hope not -- we love going in January (no crowds and my son's and mom's birthday...). But we are certainly not near retirement yet (not unless we hit the Powerball lotto, anyway!) Of course, on the other hand, maybe if you folks do cause a shift, it will force a decrease on the points values for other times of the year, like the school summer vacation period that we are currently stuck in for the next 16 years!!

Just a notion that passed through my midnight-hour mind.

Cindy

IF DVC chooses to raise point values for some time period, they must compensate by lowering an equal amount of points elsewhere in the calendar.

January is also the least popular of the winter months for snowbirds based on the experience my parents have had in renting over the past eight years as snowbirds.

The same thought about "snowbird" times getting filled up crossed my mind. But then I remembered that we are only a very small group of DVC members posting here. We also fall primarily into the 30-50 year old category and, of course, are computer users. Currently, we seem to have quite a few new owners posting, too.

That said, right now there are probably folks already doing the snowbird plan. Someone who was in the 40-60 year range when DVC first started is now in the 50-70 age bracket. Many of those lucky dogs may already be doing the 1-3 month stay at DVC. Everything runs in cycles. As some of our oldest members pass their ownership usage on to their children, more young families will be coming to DVC just as today's young family becomes tomorrow's retiree with grandchildren. I think it will all continue to flow and work out for all of us.

Funny for me as well - interesting thought - Jan in Orlando is probably a little too cold for the snowbird crowd but if DVC wants to raise Jan points and lower March that would be way cool (and unlikely....)

We just bought DVC at BCV, and have four kids. Our "baby" will start kindergarten next fall. It will be 13 long years before we will go during the school year! I'm sure that we are not the only ones in this boat.

We will start retirement there in 2005. I can tell you January will never be a popular time because you really can not go swimming at least not sunny yourself around the pool that is. I think the lack of real warm weather in Jan will always keep it an unpopular month. You can also rent many condos down there dirt cheap in January so I would not worry about DVC becoming crowded in Januaury. We plan on using our points for 3 or 4, 5 day periods per year with a one bedroom and the rest of the time we will rent a condo off campus. The key thing here also is you really have to be from the North to want so very much to get out of the cold. I doubt others who live in warmer climates will want to go In Jan when it is still on the chilly side like it is where they live.
