I've booked for the 18th-30th August, purely in the hope that it might not be as crowded. However I may need to change it to the 28th July -9th August. I know Americans schools will still be on their summer holidays so it will be more crowded...but will it be unbearable?

They're more of less the dates we go each year, yes it will be slightly busier but it's fine .... Nice to give the kids time to recover before heading back to school too xxxx

Thanks. Either way it's going to be better than being at home lol

A positive of the earlier dates is that the summer events will still be on, lots of the parks have things going on and they tend to finish when the American schools go back :goodvibes

We go around this time every year. Yes, it is crowded and hot but it is not manic. Take plenty of breaks, drink lots of water, and enjoy! Any trip to WDW is just fantastic! :goodvibes

DH and I did 27 July to 3 August this year. Yes, it was busy (but certainly not unmanageable), yes it was hot (but beautiful sun and plenty of air conditioning if you don't like being too hot), and it was probably the best trip we had. Despite waits for big attractions being 2 hours most of the day, if you plan things, get to the park 30m+ before opening, and always have an FP on the go (or now FP+ planned, I guess) you may end up like us, not waiting more than 20 mins for anything.

We also only booked six weeks before but still got nearly all the dining options we wanted and even managed to book some the same day (Boma and Mama Melrose).

Best advice is go prepared and you won't be disappointed.

As above, we generally go end July/early August, and have to say that we have very rarely waited for more than 20 mins at any Disney Park through using the busy days guides to visit on the least busy days, making good use of Fastpasses, and occasionally using morning EMH when staying on-site.

Weather wise it is hot and humid, but keep nipping into the shops for the a/c, take in some of the shows in the shade or indoors (again air conditioned), and take time for a meal in an air conditioned location.

We also carry frozen bottles of water in with some unfrozen so that we have cool water throughout the day.

We always go now in main school holidays, normally August time... It's busy but never been crazy the later in August you go the better normally... It's hot but get to the parks early and you will get lots done, maximise FP and try to be organised , oh and have fun fun fun...
