Will I run into any problems packing water and food in checked luggage?

Ohh... I thought the liquids thing was for checked luggage as well. Like I said I rarely fly. I prefer to drive places. And when I do fly, it's to my aunt's and I don't have to worry about liquids and stuff cause I know she can just get me stuff there if she doesn't have any handy.
I dunno... I just remember reading at the bottom of Disney recepts (sp??) about snowglobes and such. Under "Have a magical day!"

Wow, I never thought about the fact that other people's luggage may contain so much messy and unnecessary stuff that could damage my belongings. Now I will wrap all my clothes and other things in plastic before packing them. LOL

Haha....yeah...me neither until i read these boards. I have to travel with a lot of lotions, shamppos etc. b/c i can only use certain (expensive) brands b/c of allergies but i usually quadruple pack it and i usually put masking tape over the top of the bottles....we began using the masking tape after we had one minor explosion in teh suitcase.

But b/c we have so much of our own stuff that could ruin our clothes, we pack our clothes in those gigantic ziploc bags...like teh storage sized ones. They work great and can be reused

When it comes to stuff that can explode and damage other peoples stuff, i say only take what is completely encessary (sunscreen, lotions, etc) and figure out another way to get the water adn juice etc. to your destination

I always pack water bottles in my suitcases. I put them in ziploc bags. Never had a problem with it leaking. I also pack snacks in our suitcases, too.

I didn't pack water, but last year a packed a suitcase full of snacks, chips, goldfish, pretzels, with no problems.

We didn't bring water or even order it; I brought a reuseable bottle and got water in the parks. It really wasn't bad. We both survived. If I wanted bottled water in the future, I would order from Costco. You can't beat that price!

I did pack bread, a PB & J, snacks, and cereal. The bread and PB & J I packed carefully in a rectangle shaped tupperware type container (taped shut), and wrapped the PB & J in bubble wrap inside of a zip loc, also in the container. Everything was in perfect condition when we got there. The container came in handy on the way home for the christmas ornaments we bought.

::yes::

We can't get it shipped from Costco, and all I wanted was water. We packed it in our suitcases with no problems.

This thread has gotten me so rattled that I just ordered the travel-type SpaceBags for our trip next month.

We've packed water in ziploc bags with no problem as well as snacks. It's all in how you protect them with your clothes. :)

As for shampoos etc busting open, I always pack mine in ziploc bags. So much easier to throw out the bag with shampoo that leaked out! I use A LOT of ziplocs when we travel.

No, really - you can get water shipped by CostCo (even, apparently, if you're not a member). If not CostCo, then Staples has NO restrictions on who can order from them and also sells/ships water.

I was thinking of just ordering a case of water and snacks from gardengrocer, but got to looking at my airline's baggage requirements.
I can check a bag at no charge up to 50 lbs. I think we can get the majority of our clothes in carry on bags for each of us.
See any problems check a bag with a case of water and my kids favorite snacks? It would save me the $12 delivery fee, tip, and probably save on the food prices.
I agree w/ you completely. $12 delivery fee + tip + incr prices (due to shelf price vs sale price you'd pay) = $20 or more. for me here at home that would be the price of 10 cases of water. :scared1: It's the $ saving techniques that allow me to go to WDW more often. And before someone says, well then go less often or when you can afford it w/o doing these types of things, I say 'different strokes for different folks.' Even if I was a millionaire, I'd still shop sales, use coupons, save $ however so I'd have more $ for longer. But that's my style.

Moreover, if you do decide to try this plan and ship your water. I would make certain Southwest will take it. They have the right to refuse anything for cargo.
I have taken water on AirTran and SW multiple times and NEITHER has ever refused it. SW does not care about cases of water at all. I know 2 pilots who fly for SW. It's getting it thru the TSA inspection that can be the delay.

I have packed water in an extra checked suitcase before. Both times my waters did not break. The only issue I had was that the water crushed my cheez its and pretzels I packed in the same suitcase, which certainly isn't a major problem. I also got a little paper in that suitcase, on both trips, saying that security checked it. They probably saw it had liquid in it or something. Again, not a real problem.

I also used the empty suitcase for souvenirs on the way home.
Your situation sounds like mine. One time the water crushed the pop tarts, the pringles (in a can, who would've thought :confused3) and a few other things. We get the same TSA paper EVERY time in our rolling duffel that we put the water in. And I love putting the dirty laundry in the rolling duffel and putting the souvies in the empty suitcase. :lovestruc

I don't think you need to bring a case of water with you. As for the snacks, why not just find a grocery store when you get there and buy them there?
Not everyone rents a car, wants to pay cab fare to a grocery store, or wants to use their precious time to grocery shop. Not trying to be snarky, but in this economy, I can see why people are looking for the least expensive ways to accomplish the same goal. just my .02

I did pack some snacks and checked them on Southwest and they were great. I would never pack liquid - too much chance of it breaking. I used WeGoShop to bring us water, soda, and beer. They were great. Charged us only the cost of the stuff (even got us a buy 3 get 1 free deal) and a service charge of about $20 to deliver. So worth it! Next trip I will have them pick up all the breakfast foods too and not pack anything.
bolding is mine...
WOW. I personally, would not be interested in throwing away $20 on a delivery fee, but that is me. I'm not berating you for doing this. but it is not my style. different strokes...

I use a LOT of the 2 1/2 gallon bags when I pack. Not only to protect my clothes, but also so if TSA goes thru the bag, they're not handling my 'garments' directly. The thought of that creeps me out way more than 'explosions'.

OP poster, good luck w/ your decision. Do what you think is right for you. Do not let others dictate for you. I'm sure you will take the necessary precautions if you decide to take your own water as others on this thread have stated that they have sucessfully done.
I hope you have a wonderful trip. :goodvibes

No, we're in Canada. I tried both Costco and Staples a few years ago and neither wouldn't let me order from them. If I could, I would! (Love my water, hate the prices out anywhere. )

Are there any other ways besides shipping or ordering it from Costco? We are not members and I wasn't sure it that would hold us back or not...

You do not need to have a membership to order.

Every single thing I pack goes into a ziplock bag.

Ok no flames please-

I packed water on my last trip in my checked bags.

:scared1:

:rolleyes1

Here's what I did:

3 water bottles, packed in a gallon size ziplock, air squeezed out and sealed. I then packed it in another gallon size ziplock, air squeezed out and sealed. Then, packed in a plastic grocery bag, tied at the top and placed between layers of clothes. I had 2 little 'packages' like this (so 6 water bottles).

I also packed:

Jar of Peanut Butter and Jar of Honey, in 2 ziplock bags
Slices of bread in ziplock bags
Apples in ziplock bags
Travel packs of jelly in ziplock bags

Can you tell that I stocked up on ziplocks before my trip?! :rotfl:

IT WORKED OUT GREAT!!! You just have to be smart with how to pack your stuff.

I wouldn't pack water...I think the Orlando water is fine. At most, I'd bring my Brita filter.

But we do pack a full travel bar most places we go, and it's never a problem. It's in a locked little suitcase that goes inside our bigger suitcase.

I'm going with Wegoshop this time too - great reviews on the owner Marge on the DVC site - the $20 charge for tip and delivery fee - is less than a checked bag -

I have UPS'd liquids and food before - but it ended up costing $25 (Water and booze is heavy people!! :rotfl2:) Plus a few resorts are now charging $5 for the packages (in the convention resorts of CBR? BW and BCV )

So this next trip, I"m going to try the WEgoshop service... (we dont rent a car, again putting that money into a delivery service)

(Keep in mind you can get filtered water at any of the places in WDW that have the soda machines - FREE!! Ice water FREE!! I often get that and pour it into one of our containers - but this next trip is the Marathon, and I want a few bottles of water for that!!)

I never packed water to go to Florida, we always have a rental car. I did however pack a 6 bottles of water in double ziploc bags in each of our 5 suitcases on our trip to Atlantis resort. 30 bottles of water packed in ziplocs not even a drip in any of the bags. Definitely pack them in ziplocs as a common courtesy to others.

What kind of snacks do you pack and what goes in your carry on vs. checked bag? I am thinking of bringing some snacks, but don't know what I could carry on. Also, do you put bread/pershiables in some container? TIA

Op back. Didn't think food and water in luggage was such a debatable topic.

Stitchlovestink- great replies by the way.

Well here is what I have decided to do. We will be staying at CSR and everyone says if staying here to get on the QSDP because the food is a bit expensive and will be eating alot at CSR. So, I think I will make everyone get up a bit early and march there butts up PM to eat breakfast. On the QSDP, for breakfast you get 2 drinks with your meal, so if we refill our mugs with caffeinated drinks (we did get up early) we can each have 2 bottles of water.
Then at each lunch or dinner there, refill those mugs and get another bottle of water for each of us. So for the 3 of us, I could end up getting more than a case of water.
I will probably still pack a few favorite snacks in the luggage.
How does that plan sound?
