I thought with the new system, they could switch your reservation without you having to worry about losing it. Wasn't this part of the upgrade?

I think you are right. When I called to change the second half of my trip to a GV from a 2BR, I mentioned to the CM that I did not want to lose what I had if the GV was not available. When he determined that the GV was available, he put me on hold saying that he was going to get someone else to cancel the days on my existing reservation and put the GV in. (I'm new to DVC, so don't know if this is a new practice or not, but the CM seemed confident that there was no chance that I would lose either my 2BR or the GV during the transaction.)
