If I were to put my girlfriend's engagement ring (in the box) in my pocket while going through security at the airport, will it set off the metal dectectors. I'm pretty sure it would (since its metal), but I just needed to rule this out as a way to get the ring to WDW without her seeing it.
Option 2 is putting it in the carrying pouch of my electric razor, unless I can't put that in my carry-on.
Thanks for the help.

Actually I don't think the ring would set off the sensor. I can't imagine why the box would make a difference.

Women routinely wear them thru with no issues and I wear a gold bracelet, either diamond or gold earrings and my gold watch thur and they have never set them off. Costume jewerly is another matter.

Now, you will need to make sure NOTHING else you have on sets it off or she would see it. So. EMPTY EVERYTHING else out of those pockets, no change, no cell phones etc.. Remove your shoes, (no matter what kind). If you use a money clip drop it in the basket. Take off your belt. You get the picture. If you can don't wear snap jeans. That snap seems to be an issue sometimes.

(I fail to understand why so many men don't get the EMPTY the pockets part! I see them all the time looking shocked that the $20 in change they have set off the alarm.

I agree that the ring shouldn't be a problem but I would hide it somewhere in a carryon just in case you do set off the alarm for ANY reason. Don't want to have to empty those pockets as Carol said.

BTW I have a solid gold charm bracelet that does set if off if I wear it with my watch. So I take both off these days before security.

Don't put it in the pocket of a jacket. You must take a jacket off and put it through the scanner, it could fall out.

I'd also put it in a carry-on, just to be safe. The ring won't set off the metal detector, but the metal on the box hinge, or if there is a button on the box might.

the beeper may not go off but i will tell you a story

my husband who at the time was my boyfriend, we were flying down to wdw and he was going to pop the question.
he bought a platinum diamond ring. well my husband smokes and this was 4 months after sept 11 and we were flying out of logan so security was high. we steve told me to walk ahead if we get stopped at the securtiy checkpoint because he had cigarettes and a lighter on him and well everybody was very nervous about getting searched.
so yes he got stopped because he beeped. well i walked ahead and waited. the securtiy guard made him empty all his pocket and steve let him know that he had the ring in his pocket so the guard said take your shoes off and put the box in your shoe. i never caught on and i was very surprised. also my husband did not have a carry on so i never thought he had anything valuable with him which even further made me surprised.

good luck and congratulations on your proposal

I have a gold wedding/engagement ring, doesn't set off the detector, but my Tag/heuer watch and charm bracelet do. They're stainless steel. I was pulled out of line to be searched last Sept. It made me nervous only because I had my 7 year old DD with me and they wouldn't let her come over to me. Ugh! I'd have your gf walk ahead and keep the box in your pocket. I would be nervous to leave it in a carryon.
Good luck!
Gretchen
