Will a DVC work for how we travel?

We are in a similar situation except the in-laws own the points. I think you have to be careful how the owners are listed versus the associates. Us kids are associate members. I can make my own reservations and changes and stuff. This will irk some--but because of that, our keys have said Member. I do not think I could bank the points, haven't tried, don't want to. But we pretty much can use points when wanted/needed.

We do not get the AP discount because we do not have the same address. I also think they would have to buy the TIW card as well. We do not do DDP.

Just be sure if you are to be the owners, you may need to be the ones who write the check or at least present at closing. In other words, your in-laws may need to give you the money to pay for it.

On the flip side, even if you are used to value, it does change the way you vacation. You will eat a little more often in the villa (allergy friendly, cheaper). There is more space and you can do laundry. You may also find that you do not feel as obligated to travel at those peak times because you are not trying to work around the deals. I enjoy going when the deals are switching because it seems there is much movement in the resorts and less in the parks.

Thanks for this insight. You bring up lots of good points. They want us to get the discounts and to be able book. We currently make all of our arrangements when we do travel together.
Lots to think about.

Well, it should come as no surprise to you k3chantal, but I disagree with you on this. :) I don't think the two are mutually exclusive. You can embrace the pixie dust and love your DVC and prepay for your vacations and all that good stuff and still try to get a good deal.

I'm a BLT resale owner and I don't love Disney any less than the people who bought direct in the $130-160pp range. I just paid half as much.

I'm with ELMC here. Loving your DVC/Disney and getting a good deal are not mutually exclusive. If I didn't get a good deal, I would not have bought DVC.

Our biggest 'disagreement' is semantics and I never feel any animosity towards you because you hold me responsible for clearly expressing myself and do so in an non offensive manner. Pleased that you could only tear apart one sentence in my post instead of the whole posts as in the past.:)
But regardless, yes, buying resale would be considered a 'good deal' when comparing direct sale prices. However, the upfront costs are still in the many thousands (which is a lot of money for most) and may not feel like a 'good deal' at the time to a person's pocketbook. However it will feel like a good deal 'faster' than buying direct. I am not convinced that you should buy DVC if you are just looking for a 'good deal' since there are reoccurring costs associated with owning that most likely will go up each year. So if saving money is the forefront thought going in, one should carefully evaluate whether they can afford the yearly upkeep over the course of many decades because you definitely lose money by selling your membership. However, if you are just wanting a good deal for the the 'joy' of saving money but could purchase direct, then my point is mute.
So to clarify, my point to the OP was that when you buy DVC you are 'just' pre-paying' for future vacations and she needs to be careful about what she will be responsible for over the course of her membership if a family member is paying for her points. In her specific case, it looks like she is getting the best deal ever....someone else is paying for it all.
By the way, I haven't read all the posts, does the OP mention what kind of contract she would be given? Or is the resale vs. direct issue just being snaked into this thread? I am beginning to feel there is a 'secret' agenda to constantly bring up this topic in all discussions :).

I think I'm going to flip flop and actually agree with you! :) I think what you are saying is that you can get a good deal when buying DVC, but that's not what it's about. I can get on board with that. Truly, if one were looking just for a good deal, they would buy a timeshare off of eBay for $1 that had strong trading power through RCI and simply try to trade into DVC whenever possible. That would be a good deal.

As for the direct vs. resale discussion, I'd have to go back and reread how that got worked into this thread, but I agree with you that it comes up a lot. I think that people just want others to know about it so that they can make an informed choice. Personally, I have nothing against direct purchases or direct purchasers, and I think that there are many times that they make sense. What I don't like is reading posts on here where people say that they bought direct because they didn't know about the resale market and wish they had. I don't like to hear stories of regret, and that's why I bring it up. But I think it's totally respectable that people on here like you have purchased direct and are happy with it. Different strokes for different folks. :)
