So thanks to the good people on these boards I am convinced that the WL was a great choice and can't wait to go!
Now I just need to decide if I should upgrade my room to a woods view.
Are ALL standard rooms overlooking loading docks, smokehouse, rooftops, etc?
Even though I don't intend to spend that much time in the room, we do go back for midday naps and we are paying deluxe prices, so I'd prefer something a little nicer when I look outside. Can anyone recommend a specific section I should request? The more I read about this, the more confused I seem to get!

You'll find a lot of information about the WL and the standard room views in the Wilderness Lodge thread:

Post #160 has some pictures of the standard view. :)

You did make a good choice! WL is one of our favorites! We booked a standard view last time and ended up being upgraded to Courtyard view! It was a beautiful view and we were so excited. The first time we had Woods view and it was peaceful and pretty but just ok. We chose it because at the time, there were no standard rooms available. Im not sure I would pay extra from standard to woods because honestly it was no big upgrade.

I also agree that the WL thread is superb and has lots of great info!

Yep, the WL thread is great. Lots of info there and helpful people. The first posts have a lot of general resort info, and the second post (here) has a map of room locations. I refer to it all the time.

To answer your question, yes all of the rooms that are classified as Standard View overlook rooftops or service areas. That does not mean that you will get one of these rooms by booking Standard View, but you can't guarrantee you'll get something better unless you pay the extra. We have been fortunate enough to get upgraded views both times we stayed there while only booking (and paying for) standard view. That is the approach we are taking for our next trip as well.

Besides the view out the back of the room, the other major factor in room location is the view out the front, i.e. whether the room overlooks the lobby. Relatively few rooms do, but it can be an impressive view. The downside is that it can be more noisy with activity from the lobby, so some prefer to be further away in the wings of the resort. There is also sometimes noise from the main pool area, so for Courtyard view having a room that overlooks the Villas pool is quieter. It is just up to you as far as what your family prefers, but overall you can't go too wrong by staying at such a great resort.
