Wilderness Cabin Swamp

My family is planning a long trip to DW next June. We have reservations for a Wilderness Cabin so we could spread out a little more (and we've never stayed their before). As a backup, I have also reserved a Junior Suite at Shades of Green. When I took a quick trip to DW this weekend, I drove over to the Wilderness campgrounds to look at the areas where the cabins are to see if there were sites I liked better than others. I was shocked to see the amount of standing water (actually swamp) all over the areas. There were entire cabin loops where every piece of ground looked like swamp. I'm concerned about mosquitos since my hubby and kids swear that if there is one mosquito four states away and it knows they are outside, it will go out of it's way to come drink their blood! I'm curious to hear from other visitors who have stayed there and whether they experienced a problem with standing water and mosquitos. I've only read great reviews about the cabins so this was totally unexpected.

The campground is our favorite place to stay and there is standing water often from rain. I don't know what Disney does, but they have less mosquitos than my backyard.

Hard to say because it's a typical Florida summer....clouds move in around the afternoon, rain for a little bit, and then go away leaving the place more humid than it started. The difference was that the standing water looked like it had been around for a long while given the level of scum.

That's great to know. If you don't mind me asking, do you typically stay in the cabins or with the RVs? I didn't see much of the area that housed the RVs but it didn't look like the RV areas had alot of water.

Didn't they get rain from TS Emily late last week? I'd think that would do it but I can't recall if it affected this area.

We did get a little rain off and on. My sister and I were there Friday - Monday (we got back this past Monday) and I went by to see the cabins on Monday afternoon before we drove out. I'm hoping that someone who is susceptible to mosquitos and has stayed at the Cabins can provide a first-hand account on whether they were able to enjoy the outdoors around their cabin.

We stayed there a month camping in our pop-up trailer a few years ago and had few mosquito bites. The chiggers from the Spanish moss were the problem. I step outside in my yard and get zapped by a dozen mosquitoes in shear minutes, at WDW nothing. I wouldn't worry about the mosquitoes at Ft. Wilderness. It rains, the water pools then gets absorbed back into the ground. Plus there's always bug spray.

Heavy rains will cause standing water around many areas of FW, not just the cabins. Because of this, FW has large pumps and more than likely just hadn't reached that area to pump the water out. We've experienced standing water one day to none the next. Don't let that or mosquitoes deter you from staying there. I'm a mosquito magnet and have had no issues. The noseeum bugs to me are worse.

My parents used to take their RV for many years until they sold it and now we all stay in the cabins.
